Song of Solomon 8:6-8 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Set me as a seal on your heart,
as a seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death;
ardent love is as unrelenting as Sheol.
Love’s flames are fiery flames
the fiercest of all.[a]
Mighty waters cannot extinguish love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If a man were to give all his wealth[b] for love,
it would be utterly scorned.

B Our sister is young;
she has no breasts.
What will we do for our sister
on the day she is spoken for?

  1. Song of Solomon 8:6 Or the blaze of the Lord
  2. Song of Solomon 8:7 Lit all the wealth of his house

Song of Songs 8:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

Place me like a seal over your heart,
    like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
    its jealousy[a] unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
    like a mighty flame.[b]
Many waters cannot quench love;
    rivers cannot sweep it away.
If one were to give
    all the wealth of one’s house for love,
    it[c] would be utterly scorned.

Friends

What shall we do for our sister
    on the day she is spoken for?

Footnotes:

  1. Song of Songs 8:6 Or ardor
  2. Song of Songs 8:6 Or fire, / like the very flame of the Lord
  3. Song of Songs 8:7 Or he
