Huwag Ibigin ang Mundo
4 Ano ba ang pinagmumulan ng mga pag-aaway at alitan ninyo? Hindi baʼt ang masasamang kagustuhan na naglalaban-laban sa puso nʼyo? 2 May mga ninanais kayo pero hindi nʼyo makamtan, kaya handa kayong pumatay dahil dito. May mga gusto kayong makuha at kapag hindi ito nangyari, nag-aaway-away kayo. Hindi nʼyo nakakamtan ang mga ninanais nʼyo dahil hindi kayo humihingi sa Dios. 3 At kung humihingi naman kayo, wala kayong natatanggap dahil humihingi kayo nang may masamang motibo para mapagbigyan ang sarili nʼyong kasiyahan. 4 Kayong mga hindi tapat sa Dios, hindi nʼyo ba alam na kaaway ng Dios ang umiibig sa mundo? Kaya ang sinumang nagnanais makipagkaibigan sa mundo ay ginagawa niyang kaaway ng Dios ang sarili niya. 5 Huwag ninyong isipin na walang kabuluhan ang sinasabi ng Kasulatan, “Ayaw ng Espiritung pinatira sa atin na may kaagaw sa pag-ibig niya.”[a] 6 Ngunit sapat ang biyayang ibinigay ng Dios. Kaya nga sinasabi sa Kasulatan, “Kinakalaban ng Dios ang mga mapagmataas, pero kinakaawaan niya ang mapagpakumbaba.”[b]
7 Kaya magpasakop kayo sa Dios. Labanan nʼyo ang diyablo at lalayo ito sa inyo. 8 Lumapit kayo sa Dios at lalapit din siya sa inyo. Kayong mga makasalanan, mamuhay kayo nang malinis. At kayong mga nagdadalawang-isip, linisin nʼyo ang inyong puso. 9 Maging malungkot kayo at maghinagpis dahil sa mga kasalanan nʼyo. Palitan nʼyo ng pagdadalamhati ang pagsasaya ninyo. 10 Magpakumbaba kayo sa harapan ng Panginoon, at itataas niya kayo.

11 Mga kapatid, huwag ninyong siraan ang isaʼt isa. Ang naninira o humahatol sa kapatid niya ay nagsasalita laban sa Kautusan at humahatol sa Kautusan. At kung ikaw ang humahatol sa Kautusan, hindi ka na tagatupad nito kundi isa nang hukom. 12 Ngunit ang Dios lang ang nagbigay ng Kautusan at siya lamang ang hukom. Tanging siya ang may kakayahang magligtas at magparusa.[c] Kaya sino ka para husgahan ang kapwa mo?

13 Makinig kayo sa akin, kayong nagsasabi, “Ngayon o bukas, pupunta kami sa isang bayan. Mamamalagi kami roon ng isang taon, magnenegosyo, at kikita ng malaki.” 14 Sa katunayan, hindi nʼyo alam kung ano ang mangyayari sa inyo bukas. Sapagkat ang buhay ay parang hamog na lilitaw nang sandali at mawawala pagkatapos. 15 Kaya nga, ito ang dapat ninyong sabihin: “Kung loloobin ng Panginoon at mabubuhay pa tayo, ganito o kaya ganoon ang gagawin natin.” 16 Ngunit sa ngayon, nagmamalaki at nagmamayabang kayo. Ang ganyang pagyayabang ay masama.
17 Kung alam ng isang tao ang mabuti na dapat niyang gawin, pero hindi naman ginagawa, nagkakasala siya.

Warning Against Worldliness
4 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions[a] are (A)at war within you?[b] 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask (B)wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 (C)You adulterous people![c] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? (D)Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit (E)that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But (F)he gives more grace. Therefore it says, (G)“God opposes the proud but (H)gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. (I)Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 (J)Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (K)Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and (L)purify your hearts, (M)you double-minded. 9 (N)Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 (O)Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11 (P)Do not speak evil against one another, brothers.[d] The one who speaks against a brother or (Q)judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only (R)one lawgiver and (S)judge, he who is able to save and (T)to destroy. But (U)who are you to judge your neighbor?
Boasting About Tomorrow
13 Come now, you who say, (V)“Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For (W)you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, (X)“If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. (Y)All such boasting is evil. 17 (Z)So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Gegen Begehrlichkeit und Freundschaft mit der Welt
4 Woher kommen die Kämpfe und die Streitigkeiten unter euch? Kommen sie nicht von den Lüsten, die in euren Gliedern streiten?
2 Ihr seid begehrlich und habt es nicht, ihr mordet und neidet und könnt es doch nicht erlangen; ihr streitet und kämpft, doch ihr habt es nicht, weil ihr nicht bittet.
3 Ihr bittet und bekommt es nicht, weil ihr in böser Absicht bittet, um es in euren Lüsten zu vergeuden.
4 Ihr Ehebrecher und Ehebrecherinnen, wisst ihr nicht, dass die Freundschaft mit der Welt[a] Feindschaft gegen Gott ist? Wer also ein Freund der Welt sein will, der macht sich zum Feind Gottes!
5 Oder meint ihr, die Schrift rede umsonst? Ein eifersüchtiges Verlangen hat der Geist, der in uns wohnt;
6 umso reicher aber ist die Gnade, die er gibt. Darum spricht er: »Gott widersteht den Hochmütigen; den Demütigen aber gibt er Gnade«.[b]
Aufruf zu Buße und Demütigung vor Gott
7 So unterwerft euch nun Gott! Widersteht dem Teufel, so flieht er von euch;
8 naht euch zu Gott, so naht er sich zu euch! Reinigt die Hände, ihr Sünder, und heiligt eure Herzen, die ihr geteilten Herzens seid!
9 Fühlt euer Elend, trauert und heult! Euer Lachen verwandle sich in Trauer und eure Freude in Niedergeschlagenheit!
10 Demütigt euch vor dem Herrn, so wird er euch erhöhen.
11 Verleumdet einander nicht, ihr Brüder! Wer seinen Bruder verleumdet und seinen Bruder richtet, der verleumdet das Gesetz und richtet das Gesetz; wenn du aber das Gesetz richtest, so bist du nicht ein Täter, sondern ein Richter des Gesetzes.
12 Einer nur ist der Gesetzgeber, der die Macht hat, zu retten und zu verderben; wer bist du, dass du den anderen richtest?
Warnung vor Selbstsicherheit
13 Wohlan nun, die ihr sagt: Heute oder morgen wollen wir in die und die Stadt reisen und dort ein Jahr zubringen, Handel treiben und Gewinn machen
14 — und doch wisst ihr nicht, was morgen sein wird! Denn was ist euer Leben? Es ist doch nur ein Dunst, der eine kleine Zeit sichtbar ist; danach aber verschwindet er.
15 Stattdessen solltet ihr sagen: Wenn der Herr will und wir leben, wollen wir dies oder das tun.
16 Jetzt aber rühmt ihr euch in eurem Übermut! Jedes derartige Rühmen ist böse.
17 Wer nun Gutes zu tun weiß und es nicht tut, für den ist es Sünde.

Submit Yourselves to God
4 What causes fights and quarrels(A) among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle(B) within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill.(C) You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive,(D) because you ask with wrong motives,(E) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4 You adulterous(F) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(G) means enmity against God?(H) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(I) 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]?(J) 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,(L) and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.(M) Wash your hands,(N) you sinners, and purify your hearts,(O) you double-minded.(P) 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.(Q) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.(R)
11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.(S) Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister[d] or judges them(T) speaks against the law(U) and judges it. 13 Now listen,(Z) you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”(AA) 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.(AB) 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will,(AC) we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.(AD) 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.(AE)
