Entréguense a Dios
4 ¿De dónde vienen todos los conflictos y peleas que hay entre ustedes? Vienen de ustedes mismos, de sus deseos egoístas que siempre están librando una guerra en su interior. 2 Ustedes desean las cosas pero no las consiguen. Su envidia puede llegar hasta el extremo de matar y aun así no consiguen lo que quieren. Por eso discuten y pelean. No consiguen lo que quieren porque no se lo piden a Dios. 3 Y cuando le piden a Dios no reciben nada porque la razón por la que piden es mala, para poder gastar en sus propios placeres.
4 ¡Gente infiel! ¿No saben que amar al mundo es lo mismo que odiar a Dios? El que quiera convertirse en amigo del mundo se convierte en enemigo de Dios. 5 ¿Creen que es en vano lo que dice la Escritura? Pues da a entender que el espíritu humano que él puso en nosotros tiende hacia los malos deseos.[a] 6 (A)Pero el generoso amor que Dios nos da es aun más fuerte, por eso la Escritura dice:
«Dios rechaza a los orgullosos,
pero es bueno con los humildes».[b]
7 Así que, entréguense a Dios, resistan al diablo y el diablo huirá de ustedes. 8 Acérquense a Dios y él se acercará a ustedes. Quiten el pecado de su vida pecadores. Concentren su mente en Dios, ustedes que quieren seguir a Dios y al mundo.[c] 9 Laméntense, pónganse tristes y lloren. Que su risa se convierta en llanto y su felicidad en tristeza. 10 Humíllense ante el Señor y él les dará honra.
11 Hermanos, no sigan hablando mal los unos de los otros. El que habla en contra de su hermano o quien juzga a su hermano está hablando en contra de la ley y está juzgando a la ley. Si tú juzgas a la ley, no estás siguiendo lo que ella dice y te conviertes en juez. 12 Solamente Dios es el dador de la ley y él es el juez; así que, ¿quién te crees que eres para juzgar a los demás?
No planeen orgullosamente su vida
13 Oigan ustedes, los que dicen: «Hoy o mañana viajaremos a esta u otra ciudad y estaremos allí un año, y haremos negocios y ganaremos mucho dinero». 14 Ustedes ni siquiera saben qué va a pasar con su vida el día de mañana, porque ustedes son como vapor que aparece sólo por un momento y después desaparece. 15 Por el contrario, siempre deberían decir: «Si el Señor quiere, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello». 16 Pero ahora ustedes se sienten orgullosos y son arrogantes; todo ese orgullo es malo. 17 Si uno sabe hacer el bien y no lo hace, está pecando.

La amistad con el mundo
4 ¿De dónde vienen las guerras y las peleas entre ustedes? Pues de los malos deseos que siempre están luchando en su interior. 2 Ustedes quieren algo, y no lo obtienen; matan, sienten envidia de alguna cosa, y como no la pueden conseguir, luchan y se hacen la guerra. No consiguen lo que quieren porque no se lo piden a Dios; 3 y si se lo piden, no lo reciben porque lo piden mal, pues lo quieren para gastarlo en sus placeres. 4 ¡Oh gente infiel! ¿No saben ustedes que ser amigos del mundo es ser enemigos de Dios? Cualquiera que decide ser amigo del mundo, se vuelve enemigo de Dios. 5 Por algo dice la Escritura: «Dios ama celosamente el espíritu que ha puesto dentro de nosotros.» 6 Pero Dios nos ayuda más con su bondad, pues la Escritura dice: «Dios se opone a los orgullosos, pero trata con bondad a los humildes.» 7 Sométanse, pues, a Dios. Resistan al diablo, y éste huirá de ustedes. 8 Acérquense a Dios, y él se acercará a ustedes. ¡Límpiense las manos, pecadores! ¡Purifiquen sus corazones, ustedes que quieren amar a Dios y al mundo a la vez! 9 ¡Aflíjanse, lloren y laméntense! ¡Que su risa se cambie en lágrimas y su alegría en tristeza! 10 Humíllense delante del Señor, y él los enaltecerá.
11 Hermanos, no hablen mal unos de otros. El que habla mal de su hermano, o lo juzga, habla mal de la ley y la juzga. Y si juzgas a la ley, te haces juez de ella en vez de obedecerla. 12 Solamente hay uno que ha dado la ley y al mismo tiempo es Juez, y es aquel que puede salvar o condenar; tú, en cambio, ¿quién eres para juzgar a tu prójimo?
No hacer planes con orgullo
13 Ahora oigan esto, ustedes, los que dicen: «Hoy o mañana iremos a tal o cual ciudad, y allí pasaremos un año haciendo negocios y ganando dinero», 14 ¡y ni siquiera saben lo que mañana será de su vida! Ustedes son como una neblina que aparece por un momento y en seguida desaparece. 15 Lo que deben decir es: «Si el Señor quiere, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello.» 16 En cambio, ustedes insisten en hablar orgullosamente; y todo orgullo de esa clase es malo. 17 El que sabe hacer el bien y no lo hace, comete pecado.

Friendship with the World
4 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? 2 You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet[a] something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose that it is for nothing that the scripture says, ‘God[b] yearns jealously for the spirit that he has made to dwell in us’? 6 But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says,
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Warning against Judging Another
11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers and sisters.[c] Whoever speaks evil against another or judges another, speaks evil against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. So who, then, are you to judge your neighbour?
Boasting about Tomorrow
13 Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.’ 14 Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.’ 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17 Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, commits sin.

Submit Yourselves to God
4 What causes fights and quarrels(A) among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle(B) within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill.(C) You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive,(D) because you ask with wrong motives,(E) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4 You adulterous(F) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(G) means enmity against God?(H) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(I) 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]?(J) 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,(L) and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.(M) Wash your hands,(N) you sinners, and purify your hearts,(O) you double-minded.(P) 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. 11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.(S) Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister[d] or judges them(T) speaks against the law(U) and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it,(V) but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge,(W) the one who is able to save and destroy.(X) But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?(Y)

13 Now listen,(Z) you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”(AA) 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.(AB) 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will,(AC) we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.(AD) 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.(AE)
