El poder de la lengua
3 Hermanos míos, no ambicionen todos el llegar a ser maestros; deben saber que nosotros, los maestros, seremos juzgados con mayor severidad. 2 Todos, en efecto, pecamos con frecuencia. Ahora bien, quien no sufre ningún desliz al hablar, es persona cabal, capaz de mantener a raya todo su cuerpo. 3 Y si no, vean cómo conseguimos que nos obedezcan los caballos: poniéndoles un freno en la boca, somos capaces de dirigir todo su cuerpo. 4 Lo mismo los barcos: incluso los más grandes y en momentos de recio temporal, son gobernados a voluntad del piloto por un timón muy pequeño. 5 Así es la lengua: un miembro pequeño, pero de insospechable potencia. ¿No ven también cómo una chispa insignificante es capaz de incendiar un bosque inmenso? 6 Pues bien, la lengua es fuego con una fuerza inmensa para el mal: instalada en medio de nuestros miembros, puede contaminar a la persona entera y, atizada por los poderes del infierno, es capaz de arrasar el curso entero de la existencia.
7 El ser humano ha domado y sigue domando toda clase de fieras, aves, reptiles y animales marinos. 8 Sin embargo, es incapaz de domeñar su lengua, que es incontrolable, dañina y está repleta de veneno mortal. 9 Con ella bendecimos a nuestro Padre y Señor, y con ella maldecimos a los seres humanos a quienes Dios creó a su propia imagen. 10 De la misma boca salen bendición y maldición. Pero esto no puede ser así, hermanos míos. 11 ¿Acaso en la fuente sale agua dulce y salobre por el mismo caño? 12 Hermanos míos, ¿puede la higuera dar aceitunas o higos la vid? Pues tampoco lo que es salado puede producir agua dulce.
Verdadera y falsa sabiduría
13 Si entre ustedes alguien se precia de sabio o inteligente, demuestre con su buena conducta su amabilidad y su sabiduría. 14 Pero si ustedes tienen el corazón lleno de envidia y de ambición, ¿para qué presumir de sabiduría y andar falseando la verdad? 15 Semejante sabiduría no viene de lo alto, sino que es terrena, carnal, diabólica. 16 Y es que donde hay envidia y ambición, allí reina el desenfreno y la maldad sin límites. 17 En cambio, la sabiduría que viene de lo alto es ante todo pura, pero también pacífica, indulgente, conciliadora, compasiva, fecunda, imparcial y sincera. 18 Resumiendo: los artífices de la paz siembran en paz, para obtener el fruto de una vida recta.

Taming the Tongue
3 (A)Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For (B)we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, (C)he is a perfect man, (D)able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put (E)bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet (F)it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And (G)the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, (H)staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life,[a] and set on fire by hell.[b] 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, (I)full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people (J)who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers,[c] these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
Wisdom from Above
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? (K)By his good conduct let him show his works (L)in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter (M)jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not (N)the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, (O)demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But (P)the wisdom from above is first pure, then (Q)peaceable, gentle, open to reason, (R)full of mercy and good fruits, (S)impartial and (T)sincere. 18 And (U)a harvest of righteousness (V)is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Power of the Tongue.[a] 1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you realize that we will be judged more strictly, 2 for we all fall short in many respects. If anyone does not fall short in speech, he is a perfect man, able to bridle his whole body also.(A) 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we also guide their whole bodies. 4 It is the same with ships: even though they are so large and driven by fierce winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination wishes. 5 In the same way the tongue is a small member and yet has great pretensions.
Consider how small a fire can set a huge forest ablaze. 6 The tongue is also a fire. It exists among our members as a world of malice, defiling the whole body and setting the entire course of our lives on fire, itself set on fire by Gehenna. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.(B) 9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. True Wisdom.[b] 13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom.(D) 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity.(E) 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.(F)

- 3:13–18 This discussion of true wisdom is related to the previous reflection on the role of the teacher as one who is in control of his speech. The qualities of the wise man endowed from above are detailed (Jas 3:17–18; cf. Gal 5:22–23), in contrast to the qualities of earthbound wisdom (Jas 3:14–16; cf. 2 Cor 12:20).

Si alguno no tropieza en lo que dice[c](D), es un hombre perfecto(E), capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo(F). 3 Ahora bien, si ponemos el freno en la boca de los caballos(G) para que nos obedezcan, dirigimos también todo su cuerpo. 4 Mirad también las naves; aunque son tan grandes e impulsadas por fuertes vientos, son, sin embargo, dirigidas mediante un timón muy pequeño por donde la voluntad[d] del piloto quiere. 5 Así también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, y sin embargo, se jacta de grandes cosas(H). Mirad, ¡qué gran bosque se incendia con tan pequeño fuego(I)! 6 Y la lengua es un fuego(J), un mundo de iniquidad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, la cual contamina todo el cuerpo(K), es encendida por el infierno[e](L) e inflama el curso[f] de nuestra vida[g]. 7 Porque todo género[h] de fieras y de aves, de reptiles y de animales marinos, se puede domar y ha sido domado por el género[i] humano, 8 pero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua; es un mal turbulento y lleno de veneno mortal(M). 9 Con ella bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre(N), y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que han sido hechos a la imagen de Dios(O); 10 de la misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así. 11 ¿Acaso una fuente por la misma abertura echa agua dulce y amarga? 12 ¿Acaso, hermanos míos, puede una higuera producir aceitunas(P), o una vid higos? Tampoco la fuente de agua salada puede producir agua dulce.
Sabiduría de lo alto
13 ¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre vosotros? Que muestre(Q) por su buena conducta(R) sus obras en mansedumbre de sabiduría. 14 Pero si tenéis celos amargos y ambición personal[j](S) en vuestro corazón, no seáis arrogantes y así mintáis contra la verdad(T). 15 Esta sabiduría no es la que viene de lo alto(U), sino que es terrenal(V), natural[k](W), diabólica[l](X). 16 Porque donde hay celos(Y) y ambición personal[m], allí hay confusión y toda cosa mala. 17 Pero la sabiduría de lo alto(Z) es primeramente pura(AA), después pacífica(AB), amable(AC), condescendiente[n], llena de misericordia(AD) y de buenos frutos, sin vacilación(AE), sin hipocresía(AF). 18 Y la semilla cuyo fruto es la justicia[o](AG) se siembra en paz por[p] aquellos que hacen la paz.
