El poder de la lengua

3 Hermanos míos(A), que no se hagan maestros muchos de ustedes(B), sabiendo que recibiremos un juicio más severo. 2 Porque todos fallamos[a] de muchas maneras(C). Si alguien no falla en lo que dice[b](D), es un hombre perfecto(E), capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo(F). 3 Ahora bien, si ponemos el freno en la boca de los caballos(G) para que nos obedezcan, dirigimos también todo su cuerpo. 4 Miren también las naves; aunque son tan grandes e impulsadas por fuertes vientos, son, sin embargo, dirigidas mediante un timón muy pequeño por donde la voluntad[c] del piloto quiere.

5 Así también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, y sin embargo, se jacta de grandes cosas(H). ¡Pues qué gran bosque se incendia con tan pequeño fuego(I)! 6 También la lengua es un fuego(J), un mundo de iniquidad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, la cual contamina todo el cuerpo(K), es encendida por el infierno[d](L) e inflama el curso[e] de nuestra vida[f]. 7 Porque toda clase[g] de fieras y de aves, de reptiles y de animales marinos, se puede domar y ha sido domado por el ser[h] humano, 8 pero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua. Es un mal turbulento y lleno de veneno mortal(M).

9 Con ella bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre(N), y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que han sido hechos a la imagen de Dios(O). 10 De la misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así. 11 ¿Acaso una fuente echa agua dulce y amarga por la misma abertura? 12 ¿Acaso, hermanos míos, puede una higuera producir aceitunas(P), o una vid higos? Tampoco la fuente de agua salada puede producir agua dulce.

Sabiduría de lo alto

13 ¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre ustedes? Que muestre(Q) por su buena conducta(R) sus obras en sabia mansedumbre. 14 Pero si tienen celos amargos y ambición personal[i](S) en su corazón, no sean arrogantes y mientan así contra la verdad(T). 15 Esta sabiduría no es la que viene de lo alto(U), sino que es terrenal(V), natural[j](W), diabólica[k](X). 16 Porque donde hay celos(Y) y ambición personal[l], allí hay confusión y toda cosa mala.

17 Pero la sabiduría de lo alto(Z) es primeramente pura(AA), después pacífica(AB), amable(AC), condescendiente[m], llena de misericordia(AD) y de buenos frutos, sin vacilación(AE), sin hipocresía(AF). 18 Y la semilla cuyo fruto es la justicia(AG) se siembra en paz por[n] aquellos que hacen la paz.

La lengua

3 Hermanos míos, no os hagáis maestros muchos de vosotros, sabiendo que recibiremos mayor condenación. 2 Porque todos ofendemos muchas veces. Si alguno no ofende en palabra, este es varón perfecto, capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo. 3 He aquí nosotros ponemos freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, y dirigimos así todo su cuerpo. 4 Mirad también las naves; aunque tan grandes, y llevadas de impetuosos vientos, son gobernadas con un muy pequeño timón por donde el que las gobierna quiere. 5 Así también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, pero se jacta de grandes cosas. He aquí, ¡cuán grande bosque enciende un pequeño fuego!

6 Y la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de maldad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, y contamina todo el cuerpo, e inflama la rueda de la creación, y ella misma es inflamada por el infierno. 7 Porque toda naturaleza de bestias, y de aves, y de serpientes, y de seres del mar, se doma y ha sido domada por la naturaleza humana; 8 pero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua, que es un mal que no puede ser refrenado, llena de veneno mortal. 9 Con ella bendecimos al Dios y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que están hechos a la semejanza de Dios.(A) 10 De una misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así. 11 ¿Acaso alguna fuente echa por una misma abertura agua dulce y amarga? 12 Hermanos míos, ¿puede acaso la higuera producir aceitunas, o la vid higos? Así también ninguna fuente puede dar agua salada y dulce.

La sabiduría de lo alto

13 ¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre vosotros? Muestre por la buena conducta sus obras en sabia mansedumbre. 14 Pero si tenéis celos amargos y contención en vuestro corazón, no os jactéis, ni mintáis contra la verdad; 15 porque esta sabiduría no es la que desciende de lo alto, sino terrenal, animal, diabólica. 16 Porque donde hay celos y contención, allí hay perturbación y toda obra perversa. 17 Pero la sabiduría que es de lo alto es primeramente pura, después pacífica, amable, benigna, llena de misericordia y de buenos frutos, sin incertidumbre ni hipocresía. 18 Y el fruto de justicia se siembra en paz para aquellos que hacen la paz.

La lengua

3 Hermanos en Cristo, no debemos tratar de ser todos maestros, pues bien sabemos que Dios juzgará a los maestros más estrictamente que a los demás. 2 Todos cometemos muchas faltas. ¿Quién, entonces, es una persona madura? Sólo quien es capaz de dominar su lengua y de dominarse a sí mismo.

3 Al caballo podemos dominarlo, y hacer que nos obedezca, si le ponemos un freno en la boca. 4 Algo parecido pasa con los barcos. Por grande que sea un barco, y por fuertes que sean los vientos que lo empujan, el navegante puede controlarlo con un timón muy pequeño. 5 Y lo mismo pasa con nuestra lengua. Es una de las partes más pequeñas de nuestro cuerpo, pero es capaz de hacer grandes cosas. ¡Es una llama pequeña que puede incendiar todo un bosque!

6 Las palabras que decimos con nuestra lengua son como el fuego. Nuestra lengua tiene mucho poder para hacer el mal. Puede echar a perder toda nuestra vida, y hacer que nos quememos en el infierno.

7 Podemos dominar toda clase de animales salvajes, de aves, serpientes y animales del mar, 8 pero no hemos podido controlar nuestra lengua ni evitar decir palabras que dañen. La lengua parece un animal salvaje, que nadie puede dominar y que está lleno de veneno mortal.

9-10 Con nuestra lengua podemos bendecir o maldecir. Con ella alabamos a nuestro Dios y Padre, y también insultamos a nuestros semejantes, que Dios hizo parecidos a él mismo. Hermanos, ¡esto no debe ser así!

11 De un mismo pozo no puede salir agua dulce y agua amarga o salada. 12 Tampoco da higos un árbol de aceitunas, ni da uvas un árbol de higos.

La sabiduría que Dios da

13 Si alguno de ustedes es sabio y entendido, demuéstrelo haciendo el bien y portándose con humildad. 14 Pero si ustedes lo hacen todo por envidia o por celos, vivirán tristes y amargados; no tendrán nada de qué sentirse orgullosos, y faltarán a la verdad. 15 Porque esa sabiduría no viene de Dios, sino que es de este mundo y del demonio, 16 y produce celos, peleas, problemas y todo tipo de maldad.

17 En cambio, los que tienen la sabiduría que viene de Dios, no hacen lo malo; al contrario, buscan la paz, son obedientes y amables con los demás, se compadecen de los que sufren, y siempre hacen lo bueno; tratan a todos de la misma manera, y son verdaderos cristianos.

18 A los que buscan la paz entre las personas, Dios los premiará dándoles paz y justicia.

The Tongue Is a Fire

3 Not many [of you] should become teachers [serving in an official teaching capacity], my brothers and sisters, for you know that we [who are teachers] will [a]be judged by a higher standard [because we have assumed greater accountability and more condemnation if we teach incorrectly]. 2 For we all stumble and sin in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says [never saying the wrong thing], he is a perfect man [fully developed in character, without serious flaws], able to bridle his whole body and rein in his entire nature [taming his human faults and weaknesses]. 3 Now if we put bits into the horses’ mouths to make them obey us, we guide their whole body as well. 4 And look at the ships. Even though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the impulse of the helmsman determines. 5 In the same sense, the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.

See [by comparison] how great a forest is set on fire by a small spark! 6 And the tongue is [in a sense] a fire, the very world of injustice and unrighteousness; the tongue is set among our members as that which contaminates the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life [the cycle of man’s existence], and is itself set on fire by [b]hell (Gehenna). 7 For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. 8 But no one can tame the human tongue; it is a restless evil [undisciplined, unstable], full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God. 10 Out of the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. These things, my brothers, should not be this way [for we have a moral obligation to speak in a manner that reflects our fear of God and profound respect for His precepts]. 11 Does a spring send out from the same opening both [c]fresh and bitter water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce [d]fresh.

Wisdom from Above

13 Who among you is wise and intelligent? Let him by his good conduct show his [good] deeds with the gentleness and humility of true wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be arrogant, and [as a result] be in defiance of the truth. 15 This [superficial] wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly (secular), natural (unspiritual), even demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder [unrest, rebellion] and every evil thing and morally degrading practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure [morally and spiritually undefiled], then peace-loving [courteous, considerate], gentle, reasonable [and willing to listen], full of compassion and good fruits. It is unwavering, without [self-righteous] hypocrisy [and self-serving guile]. 18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness (spiritual maturity) is sown in peace by those who make peace [by actively encouraging goodwill between individuals].

Controlling the Things We Say

3 My ·brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], not many of you should become teachers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly [Luke 12:48]. 2 We all ·make many mistakes [L stumble in many ways]. If people ·never said anything wrong [L did not stumble in speech/teaching/word], they would be perfect and able to ·control their entire selves, too [L bridle their whole body also]. 3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we ·can control [guide; direct] their whole bodies. 4 Also a ship is very big, and it is pushed by ·strong [fierce] winds. But a very small rudder ·controls [guides; steers] that big ship, making it go wherever the pilot wants. 5 It is the same with the tongue. It is a small ·part [member] of the body, but it ·brags [boasts] about great things.

A big forest fire can be started with only a little flame. 6 And the tongue is like a fire. It is a whole world of ·evil [iniquity; unrighteousness] among ·the parts of our bodies [L our members]. The tongue ·spreads its evil through [pollutes; stains; corrupts] the whole body. The tongue is set on fire by hell [L Gehenna; C a valley outside of Jerusalem where in the OT period children were sacrificed to a pagan god; later used as a burning trash heap; a metaphor for hell], and it starts a fire that influences ·all of life [L the wheel of birth/life]. 7 [L For] People can tame every ·kind [species] of wild animal, bird, reptile, and ·fish [L sea creature], and they have tamed them, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is ·wild and evil [or a restless evil; or an uncontrollable evil] and full of deadly poison. 9 ·We use our tongues to [L With it we] ·praise [bless] our Lord and Father, but ·then [L with it] we curse people, whom God made ·like himself [L in his likeness; Gen. 1:27]. 10 Praises and curses come from the same mouth! My ·brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], this should not happen. 11 Do ·good [fresh; L sweet] and ·bad [stale; or salt; L bitter] water flow from the same [L opening of a] spring? 12 My ·brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], can a fig tree make olives, or can a grapevine make figs? No! ·And a well full of salty water cannot give good water [L Neither can salt water make sweet].

True Wisdom

13 Are there those among you who are truly wise and ·understanding [insightful; discerning]? Then they should show it by ·living right [their good life/conduct/lifestyle] and ·doing good things [their deeds/works] with a ·gentleness [humility; meekness; Matt. 5:5; 11:29; Gal. 6:1] that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter ·jealousy [or envy] and ·are selfish [have selfish ambition] in your hearts, do not ·brag [boast; Jer. 9:23–24]. Your ·bragging [boasting] is a lie ·that hides [that denies; L against] the truth [or Don’t cover up the truth with bragging or lying]. 15 That kind of “wisdom” does not come ·from God [L down from above; C that is, from heaven] but ·from the world [is earthly]. It is ·not spiritual [natural; “soulish”; C human life apart from God; 1 Cor. 2:14]; it is ·from the devil [demonic]. 16 Where ·jealousy [or envy] and ·selfishness [selfish ambition] are, there will be ·confusion [chaos; disorder] and every ·kind of evil [evil thing/practice]. 17 But the wisdom that comes from ·God [L above; 3:15] is first of all pure, then peaceful [peace-loving], gentle [patient; considerate], and ·easy to please [or willing to yield; or open to reason]. This wisdom is ·always ready to help those who are troubled and to do good for others [L full of mercy and good fruits]. It is ·always fair [impartial] and ·honest [sincere; unhypocritical]. 18 ·People who work for peace in a peaceful way plant a good crop of right living [or Peacemakers who sow with peace will harvest a crop of justice/righteousness; Gal. 5:22–23].
