Samuel pomazuje Šaula za kralja
10 Tada je Samuel izvadio bočicu i izlio ulje na Šaulovu glavu. Poljubio ga je i rekao: »BOG te pomazao za vladara nad svojim narodom Izraelom. Vladat ćeš BOŽJIM narodom i osloboditi ga od svih okolnih neprijatelja. Znak da te BOG zaista postavio, da upravljaš nad onim što je njegovo, bit će sljedeći događaji.[a] 2 Kad se danas raziđemo, srest ćeš dvojicu ljudi blizu Rahelinoga groba u Selsahu na Benjaminovom području. Oni će ti reći da su magarice za kojima si krenuo u potragu pronađene te da se tvoj otac više ne brine za njih. No sad je zabrinut za tebe i pita se: ‘Što ću sa svojim sinom?’ 3 Nastavit ćeš svoj put i stići do velikog hrasta na mjestu zvanome Tabor. Ondje ćeš sresti trojicu ljudi koji hodočaste k Bogu, gore, u Betel. Jedan će od njih nositi tri kozlića, drugi tri kruha, a treći mijeh vina. 4 Oni će te pozdraviti i ponuditi dva kruha, koja ćeš prihvatiti. 5 Nakon toga ćeš doći u Gibeat Elohim[b], gdje je smještena postrojba Filistejaca. Dok se budeš približavao gradu, srest ćeš skupinu proroka kako silaze iz svetišta. Bit će u proročkom zanosu[c], a pred njima će svirati harfe, tamburine, citre i frule. 6 Tada će te snažno obuzeti BOŽJI duh. Past ćeš s njima u proročki zanos i preobraziti se u sasvim drugog čovjeka. 7 Nakon što se izredaju svi ovi događaji, čini sve što misliš da treba jer je Bog s tobom. 8 Idi prije mene dolje, u Gilgal. Ja ću doći i prinijeti žrtve paljenice i slavljenice. Moraš čekati sedam dana, sve dok ne dođem i kažem ti što trebaš činiti.«
Šaul s prorocima
9 Čim se Šaul okrenuo da ode od Samuela, Bog je promijenio njegovo srce. Svi su se najavljeni događaji dogodili istog dana. 10 Kad su Šaul i njegov sluga stigli u Gibeu, susreli su skupinu proroka. Tada je Božji duh snažno obuzeo Šaula i on je s njima pao u proročki zanos.
11 Svi, koji su ga poznavali otprije, vidjeli su ga među prorocima u proročkom zanosu. Ljudi su pitali jedan drugoga: »Što se to dogodilo s Kišovim sinom? Zar je i Šaul jedan od proroka?«
12 A jedan od tamošnjih ljudi je rekao: »Izgleda kao da im je on vođa[d].«
Tako je nastala izreka: »Zar je i Šaul jedan od proroka?«
13 Kad ga je prošao zanos, Šaul je otišao u svetište.
14 Šaulov je stric upitao Šaula i njegovog slugu: »Gdje ste bili?«
»Tražili smo magarice«, odgovorio je Šaul. »Kad smo vidjeli da ih ne možemo naći, otišli smo k Samuelu.«
15 »Molim te, reci mi što ti je Samuel govorio«, tražio je Šaulov stric.
16 A Šaul je rekao svome stricu: »Samo nam je rekao da su magarice pronađene.«
No nije mu rekao ništa o onome što je Samuel govorio o kraljevanju.
Samuel objavljuje da je Šaul kralj
17 Samuel je pozvao narod na skup pred BOGOM u Mispi. 18 Rekao je Izraelcima: »Izraelov BOG kaže: ‘Izveo sam Izrael iz Egipta i oslobodio vas vlasti Egipćana. Oslobodio sam vas i od svih drugih kraljevstava koja su vas ugnjetavala. 19 No vi ste danas odbacili svog Boga, koji vas oslobađa svih vaših nevolja i problema. Rekli ste da vam postavim kralja za vladara. Zato se sad poredajte pred BOGOM prema plemenima i rodovima.’«
20 Tada je Samuel pozvao da pristupe sva izraelska plemena, a odabir je pao na Benjaminovo pleme. 21 Potom je pozvao da pristupi svaki rod iz Benjaminovog plemena. Odabir je pao na Matrijev rod. Naposljetku, zvao je da pristupi svaki čovjek iz Matrijevog roda, a odabir je pao na Šaula, Kišovog sina. Tražili su ga, ali nisu ga mogli pronaći.
22 Ponovo su pitali BOGA: »Je li taj čovjek uopće došao?«
BOG je odgovorio: »Eno, sakrio se iza opreme.«
23 Otrčali su i izveli ga odande. Kad je stao među ljude, za glavu je bio viši od svih.
24 Samuel se obratio čitavom skupu: »Pogledajte čovjeka kojeg je izabrao BOG! Nitko mu nije ravan u cijelom narodu.«
Svi su uzvikivali: »Živio kralj!«
25 Tada je Samuel objasnio ljudima prava i dužnosti kralja. Zapisao ih je, a zapis položio pred BOGA. Potom je svima rekao da idu kući.
26 I Šaul je otišao kući u Gibeu. Pratili su ga ratnici koje je Bog na to potaknuo.
27 No neke su ništarije govorile: »Kako nas ovaj čovjek može spasiti?«
Javno su ga prezreli i nisu mu iskazali čast darovima. No Šaul je ostao miran.
Amonski kralj Nahaš
Nahaš[e], kralj Amona, zlostavljao je plemena Gad i Ruben. Svim je muškarcima iskopao desno oko. Nije dopuštao da im itko pomogne. Tako je iskopao desno oko svakome Izraelcu koji je živio na području istočno od rijeke Jordan. No njih je sedam tisuća uspjelo pobjeći Amoncima. Došli su u gradić Jabeš na području Gilead.[f]

10 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
2 When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.
5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:
6 And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
7 And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.
8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.
9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
12 And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
13 And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
14 And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
15 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.
16 And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
17 And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to Mizpeh;
18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:
19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.
20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
22 Therefore they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.
23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the Lord hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.
25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.

Samuel Anoints Saul
10 Then (A)Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, (B)and kissed him and said: “Is it not because (C)the Lord has anointed you commander over (D)His [a]inheritance? 2 When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by (E)Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin (F)at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. And now your father has ceased caring about the donkeys and is worrying about (G)you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?” ’ 3 Then you shall go on forward from there and come to the terebinth tree of Tabor. There three men going up (H)to God at Bethel will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. 4 And they will [b]greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive from their hands. 5 After that you shall come to the hill of God (I)where the Philistine garrison is. 9 So it was, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that God [c]gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day. 10 (R)When they came there to the hill, there was (S)a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? (T)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 Then a man from there answered and said, “But (U)who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 And when he had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.
14 Then Saul’s (V)uncle said to him and his servant, “Where did you go?”
So he said, “To look for the donkeys. When we saw that they were nowhere to be found, we went to Samuel.”
15 And Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me, please, what Samuel said to you.”
16 So Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys had been (W)found.” But about the matter of the kingdom, he did not tell him what Samuel had said.
Saul Proclaimed King
17 Then Samuel called the people together (X)to the Lord (Y)at Mizpah, 18 and said to the children of Israel, (Z)“Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all kingdoms and from those who oppressed you.’ 19 (AA)But you have today rejected your God, who Himself saved you from all your adversities and your tribulations; and you have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us!’ Now therefore, present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your [d]clans.”
20 And when Samuel had (AB)caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. 21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was chosen. And Saul the son of Kish was chosen. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they (AC)inquired of the Lord further, “Has the man come here yet?”
And the Lord answered, “There he is, hidden among the equipment.”
23 So they ran and brought him from there; and when he stood among the people, (AD)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him (AE)whom the Lord has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?”
So all the people shouted and said, (AF)“Long[e] live the king!”
25 Then Samuel explained to the people (AG)the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. 26 And Saul also went home (AH)to Gibeah; and valiant men went with him, whose hearts God had touched. 27 (AI)But some (AJ)rebels said, “How can this man save us?” So they despised him, (AK)and brought him no presents. Samuel Appoints Saul
10 Samuel took a ·jar [flask; vial] of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head. He kissed Saul and said, “The Lord has ·appointed [anointed] you ·to lead [ruler; prince over] his ·people[a] [special possession; inheritance]. 2 After you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb on the border of Benjamin at Zelzah [Gen. 35:19]. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you were looking for have been found. But now your father has stopped thinking about his donkeys and is ·worrying [anxious] about you. He is asking, “What will I do about my son?” ’
3 “Then you will go on until you reach the ·big [L oak] tree at Tabor. Three men ·on their way to worship [L going up to] God at Bethel will meet you there. One man will be carrying three ·goats [kids]. Another will be carrying three loaves of bread. And the third will have a ·leather bag [skin] full of wine. 4 They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you must accept. 5 Then you will go to ·Gibeah [or the hill] of God, where a Philistine ·camp [garrison] is. Saul Made King
9 When Saul turned to leave Samuel, God ·changed Saul’s [gave Saul a new/another] heart. All these signs ·came true [were fulfilled; occurred] that day. 10 When they arrived at Gibeah, Saul met a ·group [band; procession] of prophets. The Spirit of God ·rushed upon [overwhelmed; seized; possessed] him, and he prophesied with the prophets. 11 When people who had known Saul before saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What has happened to Kish’s son? Is even Saul ·one of [among] the prophets?”
12 A man who lived there ·said [answered; retorted], “Who is the father of these prophets [C Saul’s prophesying amazed and confused him]?” So this became a ·famous saying [proverb]: “Is ·even Saul one of [Saul also among] the prophets?” 13 When Saul finished prophesying, he ·entered the place of worship [came/went to the high place].
14 Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?”
Saul said, “We were looking for the donkeys. When we couldn’t find them, we went to talk to Samuel.”
15 Saul’s uncle asked, “Please tell me. What did Samuel say to you?”
16 Saul answered, “He told us the donkeys had already been found.” But Saul did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about ·his becoming king [the kingdom; C Saul should have announced publicly that he was king].
17 Samuel called all the people of Israel ·to meet with [to] the Lord at Mizpah [7:5–11, 15–17]. 18 He said [L to the sons of Israel], “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I ·led [brought up] Israel out of Egypt. I ·saved [rescued; delivered] you from Egypt’s ·control [L hand] and from [L the hand of] other kingdoms that were ·troubling [oppressing] you.’ 19 But ·now [today] you have rejected your God. He ·saves [rescues; delivers] you from all your ·troubles [calamities; disasters; miseries] and ·problems [distresses], but you said, ‘No! ·We want [Appoint; Set] a king to rule over us.’ Now come, ·stand [present yourselves] before the Lord in your tribes and ·family groups [clans].”
20 When Samuel ·gathered [brought forward] ·all [each of] the tribes of Israel, the tribe of Benjamin was ·picked [chosen/taken by lot]. 21 Samuel had ·them [the tribe of Benjamin] pass by in ·family groups [clans], and Matri’s family was ·picked [chosen/taken by lot]. Then he had each man of Matri’s family pass by, and Saul son of Kish was ·picked [chosen/taken by lot]. But when they looked for Saul, ·they could not find him [he had disappeared]. 22 They ·asked [inquired further of] the Lord, “Has ·Saul [L the man] come here yet?”
The Lord said, “Yes. He’s hiding ·behind [among] the baggage.”
23 So they ran and brought him out. When Saul stood among the people, he was ·a head [head and shoulders] taller than anyone else. 24 Then Samuel said to the people, “See the man the Lord has chosen. ·There is no one like him [He has no equal] among all the people.”
Then the people shouted, “Long live the king!”
25 Samuel explained the ·rights and duties [ordinances; customs] of the king and then wrote them ·in a book [on a scroll] and put it before the Lord. Then he told the people to go to their homes.
26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah. ·God touched the hearts of certain brave men who went along with him […accompanied by warriors/valiant men whose hearts God had touched]. 27 But some ·troublemakers [scoundrels; worthless men] said, “How can this man ·save [rescue; deliver] us?” They ·disapproved of [scorned; despised] Saul and refused to bring gifts to him. But Saul kept ·quiet[b] [silent; held his peace; ignored them].
