24 Vær ikke misunnelig på onde mennesker, og ha ikke lyst til å være med dem!
2 For deres hjerte tenker bare på å ødelegge, og deres leber taler ulykke.
3 Ved visdom bygges et hus, og ved forstand blir det trygget,
4 og ved kunnskap fylles kammerne med all slags kostelig og herlig gods.
5 En vis mann er sterk, og en kyndig mann øker sin kraft.
6 Du skal søke veiledning når du fører krig; hvor det er mange rådgivere, er det frelse.
7 Visdom er for høi for dåren; i byporten lukker han ikke sin munn op.
8 Den som tenker ut onde råd, blir kalt en renkesmed.
9 Dårskaps råd er synd, og en spotter er en vederstyggelighet blandt folk.
10 Viser du dig motløs på trengselens dag, så er din kraft ringe.
11 Frels dem som hentes til døden, og hold tilbake dem som føres skjelvende bort til retterstedet!
12 Når du sier: Se, vi visste ikke noget om det, mon da ikke han skjønner det, han som veier hjertene, og han som gir akt på din sjel, mon ikke han vet det og gjengjelder enhver efter hans gjerninger?
13 Et honning, min sønn, for den er god, og fin honning er søt for din gane!
14 Akt visdommen like så gagnlig for din sjel! Har du funnet den, så er det en fremtid for dig, og ditt håp skal ikke bli til intet.
15 Lur ikke som en ugudelig på den rettferdiges bolig, ødelegg ikke hans hjem!
16 For syv ganger faller den rettferdige og står op igjen, men de ugudelige kastes over ende når ulykken kommer.
17 Når din fiende faller, må du ikke glede dig, og når han snubler, må ikke ditt hjerte fryde sig,
18 forat ikke Herren skal se det og mislike det, så han vender sin vrede fra ham[a].
19 La ikke din vrede optendes over de onde, bli ikke harm over de ugudelige!
20 For de onde har ingen fremtid, de ugudeliges lampe slukner.
21 Frykt Herren, min sønn, og kongen! Med folk som setter sig op mot dem, må du ikke ha noget å gjøre;
22 for ulykken kommer brått over dem, og ødeleggelsen fra dem begge[b] - hvem kjenner den?
23 Også disse ordsprog er av vismenn: Dommeren bør ikke gjøre forskjell på folk.
24 Den som sier til den skyldige: Du er uskyldig, ham vil folkeslagene forbanne, ham vil folkene ønske ondt over;
25 men dem som straffer ham, skal det gå vel, og lykke og velsignelse skal komme over dem.
26 Kyss på leber gir den som svarer med rette ord.
27 Fullfør din gjerning der ute og gjør den ferdig på marken! Siden kan du bygge ditt hus.
28 Vær ikke vidne mot din næste uten årsak! Eller skulde du gjøre svik med dine leber?
29 Si ikke: Som han har gjort mot mig, således vil jeg gjøre mot ham; jeg vil gjengjelde enhver efter hans gjerninger.
30 Jeg kom gående forbi en lat manns mark, et uforstandig menneskes vingård,
31 og se, den var helt overgrodd med tistler; nesler skjulte dens bunn, og stengjerdet om den var revet ned.
32 Og jeg, jeg blev det var, jeg gav akt på det; jeg så det og tok lærdom av det:
33 [Sier du:] La mig ennu sove litt, blunde litt, folde mine hender litt og hvile -
34 så kommer armoden over dig som en landstryker, og nøden som en mann med skjold.

do not desire their company;

7 Wisdom is too high for fools;
in the assembly at the gate they must not open their mouths.

will be known as a schemer.
9 The schemes of folly are sin,
and people detest a mocker.

11 Rescue those being led away to death;

14 Know also that wisdom is like honey for you:
If you find it, there is a future hope for you,

do not plunder their dwelling place;
16 for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again,
but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.(M)

17 Do not gloat(N) when your enemy falls;
when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,(O)
18 or the Lord will see and disapprove
and turn his wrath away from them.(P)
Saying 29
19 Do not fret(Q) because of evildoers
or be envious of the wicked,
20 for the evildoer has no future hope,
and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.(R)
Saying 30
21 Fear the Lord and the king,(S) my son,
and do not join with rebellious officials,
22 for those two will send sudden destruction(T) on them,
and who knows what calamities they can bring?

To show partiality(V) in judging is not good:(W)
24 Whoever says to the guilty, “You are innocent,”(X)
will be cursed by peoples and denounced by nations.
25 But it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and rich blessing will come on them.
26 An honest answer
is like a kiss on the lips.
27 Put your outdoor work in order
and get your fields ready;
after that, build your house.
28 Do not testify against your neighbor without cause(Y)—
would you use your lips to mislead?
29 Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me;
I’ll pay them back for what they did.”(Z)
30 I went past the field of a sluggard,(AA)
past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;
31 thorns had come up everywhere,
the ground was covered with weeds,
and the stone wall was in ruins.
32 I applied my heart to what I observed
and learned a lesson from what I saw:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest(AB)—
34 and poverty will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.(AC)

nor desire to be (B)with them,

and by understanding it is established;

with all (F)precious and pleasant riches.
5 (G)A wise man is full of strength,
and a man of knowledge enhances his might,
6 for by (H)wise guidance you can wage your war,
