O Livro
94 Ó Senhor Deus, a ti compete fazer justiça,
castigar como recompensa do mal.
Mostra assim a tua glória!
2 Levanta-te, pois és o juiz de toda a Terra;
castiga os soberbos como merecem!
3 Até quando, ó Senhor,
gente perversa esfregará as mãos de contentamento?
4 Até quando continuarão a dizer
tudo o que querem com insolência,
orgulhando-se de todo o mal que fazem?
5 Vê como oprimem o teu povo, Senhor,
e o reduzem a nada;
como afligem os que te pertencem.
6 Assassinam as viúvas;
matam os estrangeiros e os órfãos.
7 E dizem: “O Senhor não há de ver!
O Deus de Jacob não repara nestas coisas!”
8 Deem atenção,
vocês que parecem estúpidos e têm prazer na loucura;
quando irão interessar-se pela sabedoria?
9 Aquele que deu ao ser humano a capacidade de ouvir,
seria ele surdo?
Aquele que dotou as pessoas do sentido da vista,
seria ele cego?
10 Aquele que sabe e pode castigar com justiça
não vos castigará também?
Aquele que deu o entendimento ao homem
não entenderia o que eles combinam e pensam?
11 O Senhor conhece os pensamentos das pessoas
e como os seus esforços são vãos.
12 Felizes são aqueles que tu repreendes, Senhor,
aqueles a quem ensinas a tua Lei.
13 Porque a esses darás descanso nos dias maus,
enquanto o perverso, aquele que te despreza,
cairá na cova da destruição.
14 O Senhor não abandonará
nem desamparará a sua possessão.
15 Os julgamentos voltarão a ser feitos com justiça;
todos os que têm um coração íntegro
seguirão o Senhor.
16 Quem estará a meu favor contra os malfeitores
e do meu lado contra os que praticam a iniquidade?
17 Se o Senhor não tivesse vindo em meu auxílio,
já o meu corpo estaria na terra do silêncio.
18 Quando eu gritei:
“Senhor, os meus pés tropeçam, vou escorregar!”,
logo acorreste com a tua bondade e me amparaste.
19 Quando se multiplicam, dentro de mim,
as preocupações e os cuidados,
consolas-me e trazes alegria e esperança à minha alma.
20 Poderás dar proteção a um governo corrupto
que torce as leis para pôr em execução planos injustos?
21 Eles atentam contra a vida dos justos,
e condenam à morte o inocente.
22 Mas o Senhor é o meu mais seguro retiro;
é o rochedo em que me abrigo.
23 Deus fará recair sobre eles
as consequências inevitáveis da sua iniquidade.
Serão destruídos pela sua própria malícia;
o Senhor, nosso Deus, ele mesmo os destruirá.

O Juiz da terra
94 SENHOR, meu Deus, que castiga a maldade!
Aparece em glória, ó Deus vingador!
2 Levante-se, ó Juiz da terra,
pague aos orgulhosos o que eles merecem!
3 Até quando, ó SENHOR,
os maus vão continuar sem serem castigados?
4 Até quando continuarão essas pessoas más
celebrando todo o mal que fazem?
5 SENHOR, eles oprimem o seu povo,
e fazem sofrer os que lhe pertencem.
6 Eles matam as viúvas e os estrangeiros,
eles assassinam os órfãos.
7 Dizem que o SENHOR não se dá conta do mal que eles fazem,
que o Deus de Jacó não sabe o que acontece.
8 Insensatos, procurem entender!
Aprendam, tenham juízo.
9 Será que quem fez os ouvidos não ouve vocês?
Será que quem fez os olhos não vê o que vocês fazem?
10 Aquele que disciplina as nações também vai corrigir vocês.
É ele que dá conhecimento ao homem.
11 O SENHOR sabe que o pensamento do homem
está nas coisas que não têm valor.
12 Feliz é a pessoa que o SENHOR corrige;
aqueles a quem ensina a maneira correta de viver.
13 Quando chegam os dias maus, eles têm paz.
Mas os ímpios serão enterrados.
14 O SENHOR não abandonará o seu povo;
não desamparará aqueles que lhe pertencem.
15 Voltará a ter justiça nos julgamentos,
e as pessoas honestas a apoiarão.
16 Quem me ajudou contra os ímpios?
Quem lutou ao meu lado contra os maus?
17 Se o SENHOR não tivesse me ajudado,
eu teria sido destruído.
18 Quando eu disse: “Estou prestes a escorregar”,
o amor fiel do SENHOR veio me ajudar.
19 Eu estava muito preocupado e aflito,
mas o Senhor me consolou e me encheu de alegria.
20 Deus, o Senhor não é amigo dos juízes corruptos,
que usam a lei para fazer mal às pessoas.

Psalm 94[a]
94 O Lord, the God who avenges!
O God who avenges, reveal your splendor.[b]
2 Rise up, O judge of the earth.
Pay back the proud.
3 O Lord, how long will the wicked,
how long will the wicked celebrate?[c]
4 They spew out threats[d] and speak defiantly;
all the evildoers boast.[e]
5 O Lord, they crush your people;
they oppress the nation that belongs to you.[f]
6 They kill the widow and the resident foreigner,
and they murder the fatherless.[g]
7 Then they say, “The Lord does not see this;
the God of Jacob does not take notice of it.”[h]
8 Take notice of this,[i] you ignorant people.[j]
You fools, when will you ever understand?
9 Does the one who makes the human ear not hear?
Does the one who forms the human eye not see?[k]
10 Does the one who disciplines the nations not punish?
He is the one who imparts knowledge to human beings!
11 The Lord knows that peoples’ thoughts
are morally bankrupt.[l]
12 How blessed is the one[m] whom you instruct, O Lord,
the one whom you teach from your law,
13 in order to protect him from times of trouble,[n]
until the wicked are destroyed.[o]
14 Certainly[p] the Lord does not forsake his people;
he does not abandon the nation that belongs to him.[q]
15 For justice will prevail,[r]
and all the morally upright[s] will be vindicated.[t]
16 Who will rise up to defend me[u] against the wicked?
Who will stand up for me against the evildoers?[v]
17 If the Lord had not helped me,
I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.[w]
18 If I say, “My foot is slipping,”
your loyal love, O Lord, supports me.
19 When worries threaten to overwhelm me,[x]
your soothing touch makes me happy.[y]
20 Cruel rulers[z] are not your allies,
those who make oppressive laws.[aa]
21 They conspire against[ab] the blameless,[ac]
and condemn to death the innocent.[ad]
22 But the Lord will protect me,[ae]
and my God will shelter me.[af]
23 He will pay them back for their sin.[ag]
He will destroy them because of[ah] their evil;
the Lord our God will destroy them.

- Psalm 94:8 tn Heb “understand.” The verb used in v. 7 is repeated here for rhetorical effect. The people referred to here claim God is ignorant of their actions, but the psalmist corrects their faulty viewpoint.

- Psalm 94:9 tn Heb “The one who plants an ear, does he not hear? The one who forms an eye, does he not see?”

- Psalm 94:12 tn Heb “[Oh] the happiness [of] the man.” Hebrew wisdom literature often assumes and reflects the male-oriented perspective of ancient Israelite society. The principle of the psalm is certainly applicable to all people, regardless of their gender or age. To facilitate modern application, we translate the gender and age specific “man” with the more neutral “one.” The generic masculine pronoun is used in v. 2.

- Psalm 94:16 sn Who will stand up for me…? The questions anticipate the answer, “No one except God” (see v. 17).
- Psalm 94:17 tn Heb “If the Lord [were] not my help, quickly my life would have dwelt in silence.” The psalmist, perhaps speaking as the nation’s representative, recalls God’s past intervention. - Psalm 94:20 tn Heb “Is a throne of destruction united to you, one that forms trouble upon a statute?” The rhetorical question anticipates the answer, “Of course not!” The translation, while not preserving the interrogative form of the statement, reflects its rhetorical force.
