Libro 3 (Salmos 73—89)

¡Qué bueno es Dios!

SALMO 73 (72)

Himno de Asaf.

73 Dios es muy bueno con Israel
y con la gente sincera.
Yo estuve a punto de pecar;
poco me faltó para caer,
pues me llené de envidia
al ver cómo progresan
los orgullosos y los malvados.
¡Tan llenos están de salud
que no les preocupa nada!
No tienen los problemas de todos;
no sufren como los demás.
Se adornan con su orgullo
y exhiben su violencia.
¡Tan gordos están
que los ojos se les saltan!
¡En la cara se les ven
sus malos pensamientos!
Hablan mal de la gente;
¡de todo el mundo se burlan!
Tan grande es su orgullo
que sólo hablan de violencia.
Con sus palabras ofenden
a Dios y a todo el mundo.
10 ¡Pero hay gente que los consulta
y cree todo lo que dicen!
11 Piensan que el Dios altísimo
no lo sabe ni llegará a saberlo.
12 ¡Así son los malvados!
¡No se preocupan de nada,
y cada vez son más ricos!

13 ¡De nada me sirvió hacer el bien
y evitar los malos pensamientos!
14 ¡Esos malvados
me golpean a todas horas!
¡En cuanto amanece me castigan!
15 Si hubiera pensado como los malvados,
habría traicionado al pueblo de Dios.
16 Traté de entender esto,
pero me resultó muy difícil.
17 Entonces fui al santuario de Dios,
y fue allí donde entendí
cómo terminarán los malvados:
18 Dios los ha puesto en peligro,
y van hacia su propia desgracia.
19 En un abrir y cerrar de ojos
terminarán por ser destruidos;
el terror acabará con ellos.
20 Cuando Dios entre en acción,
hará que sean olvidados
como se olvida una pesadilla.

21 Dios mío,
yo estuve muy afligido;
me sentí muy amargado.
22 He sido muy testarudo;
me he portado mal contigo:
¡me he portado como una bestia!
23 A pesar de todo,
siempre he estado contigo;
tu poder me mantiene con vida,
24 y tus consejos me dirigen;
cuando este mundo llegue a su fin,
me recibirás con grandes honores.
25 ¿A quién tengo en el cielo?
¡A nadie más que a ti!
Contigo a mi lado,
nada me falta en este mundo.
26 Ya casi no tengo fuerzas,
pero a ti siempre te tendré;
¡mi única fuerza eres tú!
27 Los que se apartan de ti
acabarán por ser destruidos;
los que no te sean fieles
acabarán perdiendo la vida.
28 Pero yo estaré cerca de ti,
que es lo que más me gusta.
Tú eres mi Dios y mi dueño,
en ti encuentro protección;
¡por eso quiero contar
todo lo que has hecho!

Libro III

    con los de corazón puro!

Yo estuve a punto de caer;
    poco me faltó para que resbalara.
Sentí envidia de los arrogantes,
    al ver la prosperidad de esos malvados.

Ellos no tienen ningún problema;
    su cuerpo está fuerte y saludable.[a]
Libres están de los afanes de la gente;
    no les afectan los infortunios humanos.
    ¿Acaso el Altísimo tiene entendimiento?».

12 Así son los malvados;
    sin afanarse, aumentan sus riquezas.

    me resultó una carga insoportable,
17 hasta que entré en el santuario de Dios;
    allí comprendí el fin que les espera:

    pero Dios es la roca de mi corazón;
    él es mi herencia eterna.

27 Perecerán los que se alejen de ti;
    tú destruyes a los que te son infieles.
    He hecho del Señor Soberano mi refugio
    para contar todas sus obras.

BOOK THREE

Psalms 73–89

The Tragedy of the Wicked, and the Blessedness of Trust in God

A Psalm of (A)Asaph.

73 Truly God is good to Israel,
To such as are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
My steps had nearly (B)slipped.
(C)For I was envious of the boastful,
When I saw the prosperity of the (D)wicked.

For there are no [a]pangs in their death,
But their strength is firm.
(E)They are not in trouble as other men,
Nor are they plagued like other men.
Therefore pride serves as their necklace;
Violence covers them (F)like a garment.
(G)Their [b]eyes bulge with abundance;
They have more than heart could wish.
(H)They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
They (I)speak [c]loftily.
They set their mouth (J)against the heavens,
And their tongue walks through the earth.

10 Therefore his people return here,
(K)And waters of a full cup are drained by them.
11 And they say, (L)“How does God know?
And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
12 Behold, these are the ungodly,
Who are always at ease;
They increase in riches.
13 Surely I have [d]cleansed my heart in (M)vain,
And washed my hands in innocence.
14 For all day long I have been plagued,
And chastened every morning.

15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children.
16 When I thought how to understand this,
It was [e]too painful for me—
17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God;
Then I understood their (N)end.

18 Surely (O)You set them in slippery places;
You cast them down to destruction.
19 Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment!
They are utterly consumed with terrors.
20 As a dream when one awakes,
So, Lord, when You awake,
You shall despise their image.

21 Thus my heart was grieved,
And I was [f]vexed in my mind.
22 (P)I was so foolish and ignorant;
I was like a beast before You.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with You;
You hold me by my right hand.
24 (Q)You will guide me with Your counsel,
And afterward receive me to glory.

25 (R)Whom have I in heaven but You?
And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
26 (S)My flesh and my heart fail;
But God is the [g]strength of my heart and my (T)portion forever.

27 For indeed, (U)those who are far from You shall perish;
You have destroyed all those who [h]desert You for harlotry.
28 But it is good for me to (V)draw near to God;
I have put my trust in the Lord God,
That I may (W)declare all Your works.

BOOK III

(Psalms 73–89)

Psalm 73

Plea for Relief from Oppressors

A Psalm of Asaph.

Truly God is good to the upright,[a]
    to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
    my steps had nearly slipped.
For I was envious of the arrogant;
    I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For they have no pain;
    their bodies are sound and sleek.
They are not in trouble as others are;
    they are not plagued like other people.
Therefore pride is their necklace;
    violence covers them like a garment.
Their eyes swell out with fatness;
    their hearts overflow with follies.
They scoff and speak with malice;
    loftily they threaten oppression.
They set their mouths against heaven,
    and their tongues range over the earth.

10 Therefore the people turn and praise them,[b]
    and find no fault in them.[c]
11 And they say, ‘How can God know?
    Is there knowledge in the Most High?’
12 Such are the wicked;
    always at ease, they increase in riches.
13 All in vain I have kept my heart clean
    and washed my hands in innocence.
14 For all day long I have been plagued,
    and am punished every morning.

15 If I had said, ‘I will talk on in this way’,
    I would have been untrue to the circle of your children.
16 But when I thought how to understand this,
    it seemed to me a wearisome task,
17 until I went into the sanctuary of God;
    then I perceived their end.
18 Truly you set them in slippery places;
    you make them fall to ruin.
19 How they are destroyed in a moment,
    swept away utterly by terrors!
20 They are[d] like a dream when one awakes;
    on awaking you despise their phantoms.

21 When my soul was embittered,
    when I was pricked in heart,
22 I was stupid and ignorant;
    I was like a brute beast towards you.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with you;
    you hold my right hand.
24 You guide me with your counsel,
    and afterwards you will receive me with honour.[e]
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
    And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
    but God is the strength[f] of my heart and my portion for ever.

27 Indeed, those who are far from you will perish;
    you put an end to those who are false to you.
28 But for me it is good to be near God;
    I have made the Lord God my refuge,
    to tell of all your works.

They are free(F) from common human burdens;

Therefore pride(G) is their necklace;(H)
    they clothe themselves with violence.(I)
From their callous hearts(J) comes iniquity[b];

    always free of care,(N) they go on amassing wealth.(O)

13 Surely in vain(P) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.(Q)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(R)

    you will despise them as fantasies.(AB)

21 When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
