La vida es breve

39 ⁽²⁾Yo había prometido cuidar mi conducta,
y no pecar con mi lengua,
y ponerle un freno a mis labios
mientras hubiera malvados delante de mí.
²⁽³⁾Y me hacía el mudo: no decía nada.
¡Ni siquiera hablaba de lo bueno!
Pero mi dolor iba en aumento;
³⁽⁴⁾¡el corazón me ardía en el pecho!
Pensando en ello, un fuego se encendió dentro de mí,
y dije entonces con voz fuerte:

⁴⁽⁵⁾«Señor, hazme saber qué fin tendré
y cuánto tiempo voy a vivir,
para que comprenda cuán breve es mi vida.
⁵⁽⁶⁾Me has dado una vida muy corta;
no es nada mi vida delante de ti.
¡Todo hombre dura lo que un suspiro!
⁶⁽⁷⁾¡Todo hombre pasa como una sombra!
De nada le sirve amontonar riquezas,
pues no sabe quién se quedará con ellas.
⁷⁽⁸⁾Y así, Señor, ¿qué puedo ya esperar?
¡Mi esperanza está en ti!
⁸⁽⁹⁾Líbrame de mis pecados;
no dejes que los necios se burlen de mí.

⁹⁽¹⁰⁾»Me hice el mudo y no abrí la boca,
porque tú eres el que actúa.
¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾Aparta de mí tus golpes;
estoy acabado por los golpes de tu brazo.
¹¹⁽¹²⁾Tú corriges al hombre castigando su maldad,
y reduces a polvo lo que más ama.
¡Todo hombre es un suspiro!

¹²⁽¹³⁾»Señor, escucha mi oración,
¡presta oído a mis lamentos!,
¡no te quedes callado ante mis lágrimas!
Yo soy para ti un extranjero,
un ave de paso, como mis antepasados.
¹³⁽¹⁴⁾Deja ya de mirarme, dame un momento de respiro,
antes que me vaya y deje de existir.»

39 (For the one directing, even to Yedutun. Mizmor Dovid). I said, I will be shomer over my ways, that I sin not with my leshon; I will be shomer over my mouth with a muzzle, while the rashah is before me.

²⁽³⁾I was dumb with silence, I held my peace for the sake of tov; and my distress grew severe.

³⁽⁴⁾My lev became hot within me; while I was musing the eish burned; then I spoke with my leshon,

⁴⁽⁵⁾Hashem, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my yamim, what it is; that I may have da’as of how chadel (fleeting, frail) I am.

⁵⁽⁶⁾Hinei, Thou hast made my yamim as a handbreadth, and mine lifespan is as nothing before Thee; verily kol adam stand as kol hevel (altogether vanity). Selah.

⁶⁽⁷⁾Surely every ish walketh in a tzel (shadow); surely they are in turmoil in vain; he heapeth up riches, and hath no da’as of who shall gather them.

⁷⁽⁸⁾And now, Adonoi, what do I wait for? My hope is in Thee.

⁸⁽⁹⁾Save me from all my peysha’im; make me not the reproach of the foolish.

⁹⁽¹⁰⁾I was silent, I opened not my mouth; because Atah (Thou) did it.

¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾Remove Thy nega (stroke, scourge) away from me; I am consumed by the blow of Thine yad.

¹¹⁽¹²⁾When Thou with rebukes dost correct man for avon (iniquity), Thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely kol adam are hevel (vanity). Selah.

¹²⁽¹³⁾Hear my tefillah, Hashem, and give ear unto my cry; hold not Thy peace at my weeping; for I am a ger with Thee, and a sojourner, as were all my Avot.

¹³⁽¹⁴⁾O spare me from Thy frown, that I may recover strength, before I depart, v’eineni (and I be no more). [T.N. Animal sacrifices cannot take away sin; they are only a shadow of the korban nefesh of Moshiach. See Ps 40 and MJ chp 10; Isa 53:10.]

Psalm 39^[a]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

¹I said, “I will watch my ways^(A)
    and keep my tongue from sin;^(B)
I will put a muzzle on my mouth^(C)
    while in the presence of the wicked.”
²So I remained utterly silent,^(D)
    not even saying anything good.
But my anguish^(E) increased;
³    my heart grew hot^(F) within me.
While I meditated,^(G) the fire^(H) burned;
    then I spoke with my tongue:

⁴“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;^(I)
    let me know how fleeting^(J) my life is.^(K)
⁵You have made my days^(L) a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,^(M)
    even those who seem secure.^[b]

⁶“Surely everyone goes around^(N) like a mere phantom;^(O)
in vain they rush about,^(P) heaping up wealth^(Q)
without knowing whose it will finally be.^(R)

⁷“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
    My hope is in you.^(S)
⁸Save me^(T) from all my transgressions;^(U)
    do not make me the scorn^(V) of fools.
⁹I was silent;^(W) I would not open my mouth,^(X)
    for you are the one who has done this.^(Y)
¹⁰Remove your scourge from me;
    I am overcome by the blow^(Z) of your hand.^(AA)
¹¹When you rebuke^(AB) and discipline^(AC) anyone for their sin,
    you consume^(AD) their wealth like a moth^(AE)—
    surely everyone is but a breath.^(AF)

¹²“Hear my prayer, Lord,
    listen to my cry for help;^(AG)
    do not be deaf^(AH) to my weeping.^(AI)
I dwell with you as a foreigner,^(AJ)
    a stranger,^(AK) as all my ancestors were.^(AL)
¹³Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
    before I depart and am no more.”^(AM)
