104 Ó Senhor Deus,
que todo o meu ser te louve!
Ó Senhor, meu Deus,
como és grandioso!
Estás vestido de majestade
e de glória
2 e te cobres de luz.
Estendes os céus
como se fossem uma barraca
3 e constróis a tua casa
sobre as águas lá de cima.
Usas as nuvens
como o teu carro de guerra
e voas nas asas do vento.
4 Fazes com que os ventos
sejam os teus mensageiros
e com que os relâmpagos
sejam os teus servidores.
5 Tu puseste a terra bem firme
sobre os seus alicerces,
e assim ela nunca será abalada.
6 Cobriste a terra
com o oceano profundo,
como se ele fosse uma capa,
e as águas ficaram acima das montanhas.
7 Porém, quando repreendeste as águas,
elas fugiram;
quando ouviram o teu grito de comando,
saíram correndo.
8 As águas correram pelos montes
e desceram para os vales,
indo ao lugar que preparaste para elas.
9 Tu puseste um limite para as águas
a fim de que não cobrissem de novo
a terra.
10 Tu fazes surgir nascentes nos vales,
e os rios correm entre os montes.
11 Da sua água bebem
todos os animais selvagens;
com ela os jumentos selvagens
matam a sede.
12 Nas margens dos rios,
os pássaros fazem os seus ninhos
e cantam entre os galhos das árvores.
13 Do céu tu envias chuvas
para os montes,
e a terra fica cheia das tuas bênçãos.
14 Fazes crescer capim para o gado
e verduras e cereais para as pessoas,
que assim tiram da terra
o seu alimento.
15 Fazes a terra produzir o vinho,
que deixa a gente feliz;
o azeite, que alegra;
e o pão, que dá forças.
16 Muita chuva cai sobre as árvores
de Deus, o Senhor,
sobre os cedros, que ele plantou
nos montes Líbanos.
17 Ali os pássaros fazem os seus ninhos,
e as cegonhas constroem as suas casas
nos pinheiros.
18 Os cabritos selvagens vivem
no alto das montanhas,
e as lebres se escondem nos rochedos.
19 Tu fizeste a lua para marcar os meses;
o sol sabe a hora de se pôr.
20 Tu fizeste a noite,
e todos os animais selvagens saem
quando escurece.
21 Os leões novos rugem enquanto caçam,
procurando a comida que Deus dá.
22 Porém, quando o sol aparece,
eles voltam
e vão se deitar nas suas covas.
23 Então as pessoas saem para o serviço
e trabalham até a tarde.
24 Ó Senhor, tu tens feito
tantas coisas
e foi com sabedoria que as fizeste.
A terra está cheia das tuas criaturas.
25 Ali está o mar imenso, enorme,
onde vivem animais grandes e pequenos,
tantos, que não podem ser contados.
26 No mar passam os navios,
e nele brinca Leviatã,
o monstro marinho que tu criaste.
27 Todos esses animais dependem de ti,
esperando que lhes dês alimento
no tempo certo.
28 Tu dás a comida,
e eles comem e ficam satisfeitos.
29 Quando escondes o rosto, ficam com medo;
se cortas a respiração que lhes dás,
eles morrem
e voltam ao pó de onde saíram.
30 Porém, quando lhes dás o sopro de vida,
eles nascem;
e assim dás vida nova à terra.
31 Que a glória de Deus, o Senhor,
dure para sempre!
Que ele se alegre com aquilo que fez!
32 O Senhor olha para a terra, e ela treme;
toca nas montanhas, e elas soltam fumaça.
33 Cantarei louvores ao Senhor
enquanto eu viver;
cantarei ao meu Deus a vida inteira.
34 Que o Senhor fique contente
com a minha canção,
pois é dele que vem a minha alegria!
35 Que desapareçam da terra aqueles
que não querem saber de Deus,
e que os maus deixem de existir!
Que todo o meu ser te louve,

A glória de Deus é manifestada na criação e na conservação de todas as coisas
104 Bendize, ó minha alma, ao Senhor! Senhor, Deus meu, tu és magnificentíssimo; estás vestido de glória e de majestade. 2 Ele cobre-se de luz como de uma veste, estende os céus como uma cortina. 3 Põe nas águas os vigamentos das suas câmaras, faz das nuvens o seu carro e anda sobre as asas do vento. 4 Faz dos ventos seus mensageiros, dos seus ministros, um fogo abrasador. 5 Lançou os fundamentos da terra, para que não vacile em tempo algum. 6 Tu a cobriste com o abismo, como com uma veste; as águas estavam sobre os montes; 7 à tua repreensão, fugiram; à voz do teu trovão, se apressaram. 8 Subiram aos montes, desceram aos vales, até ao lugar que para elas fundaste. 9 Limite lhes traçaste, que não ultrapassarão, para que não tornem mais a cobrir a terra.
10 Tu, que nos vales fazes rebentar nascentes que correm entre os montes. 11 Dão de beber a todos os animais do campo; os jumentos monteses matam com elas a sua sede. 12 Junto delas habitam as aves do céu, cantando entre os ramos. 13 Ele rega os montes desde as suas câmaras; a terra farta-se do fruto das suas obras. 14 Ele faz crescer a erva para os animais e a verdura, para o serviço do homem, para que tire da terra o alimento 15 e o vinho que alegra o seu coração; ele faz reluzir o seu rosto com o azeite e o pão, que fortalece o seu coração. 16 Satisfazem-se as árvores do Senhor, os cedros do Líbano que ele plantou, 17 onde as aves se aninham; quanto à cegonha, a sua casa é nas faias. 18 Os altos montes são um refúgio para as cabras monteses, e as rochas, para os coelhos.
19 Designou a lua para as estações; o sol conhece o seu ocaso. 20 Ordenas a escuridão, e faz-se noite, na qual saem todos os animais da selva. 21 Os leõezinhos bramam pela presa e de Deus buscam o seu sustento. 22 Nasce o sol e logo se recolhem e se deitam nos seus covis. 23 Então, sai o homem para a sua lida e para o seu trabalho, até à tarde.
24 Ó Senhor, quão variadas são as tuas obras! Todas as coisas fizeste com sabedoria; cheia está a terra das tuas riquezas. 25 Tal é este vasto e espaçoso mar, onde se movem seres inumeráveis, animais pequenos e grandes. 26 Ali passam os navios; e o leviatã que formaste para nele folgar. 27 Todos esperam de ti que lhes dês o seu sustento em tempo oportuno. 28 Dando-lho tu, eles o recolhem; abres a tua mão, e enchem-se de bens. 29 Escondes o teu rosto, e ficam perturbados; se lhes tiras a respiração, morrem e voltam ao próprio pó. 30 Envias o teu Espírito, e são criados, e assim renovas a face da terra.
31 A glória do Senhor seja para sempre! Alegre-se o Senhor em suas obras! 32 Olhando ele para a terra, ela treme; tocando nos montes, logo fumegam. 33 Cantarei ao Senhor enquanto eu viver; cantarei louvores ao meu Deus, enquanto existir. 34 A minha meditação a seu respeito será suave; eu me alegrarei no Senhor. 35 Desapareçam da terra os pecadores, e os ímpios não sejam mais.

3 and lays the beams(H) of his upper chambers on their waters.(I)
He makes the clouds(J) his chariot(K)
and rides on the wings of the wind.(L)
4 He makes winds his messengers,[a](M)

5 He set the earth(O) on its foundations;(P)
it can never be moved.
6 You covered it(Q) with the watery depths(R) as with a garment;

7 But at your rebuke(T) the waters fled,

16 The trees of the Lord(AK) are well watered,
the cedars of Lebanon(AL) that he planted.
17 There the birds(AM) make their nests;
the stork has its home in the junipers.
18 The high mountains belong to the wild goats;(AN)
the crags are a refuge for the hyrax.(AO)
19 He made the moon to mark the seasons,(AP)
and the sun(AQ) knows when to go down.
20 You bring darkness,(AR) it becomes night,(AS)
and all the beasts of the forest(AT) prowl.
21 The lions roar for their prey(AU)
and seek their food from God.(AV)
22 The sun rises, and they steal away;
they return and lie down in their dens.(AW)
23 Then people go out to their work,(AX)
to their labor until evening.(AY)
24 How many are your works,(AZ) Lord!
In wisdom you made(BA) them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.(BB)
25 There is the sea,(BC) vast and spacious,
teeming with creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.(BD)
26 There the ships(BE) go to and fro,
and Leviathan,(BF) which you formed to frolic(BG) there.(BH)
27 All creatures look to you
to give them their food(BI) at the proper time.
28 When you give it to them,
they gather it up;
when you open your hand,

they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,

30 When you send your Spirit,(BM)
they are created,

You are robed in splendor and majesty.
2 He covers himself with light as if it were a garment.
He stretches out the skies like a tent curtain,
3 and lays the beams of the upper rooms of his palace on the rain clouds.[c]
He makes the clouds his chariot,
and travels on the wings of the wind.[d]
4 He makes the winds his messengers,
and the flaming fire his attendant.[e]
5 He established the earth on its foundations;
it will never be moved.
6 The watery deep covered it[f] like a garment;
the waters reached[g] above the mountains.[h]
7 Your shout made the waters retreat;
at the sound of your thunderous voice they hurried off—
8 as the mountains rose up,
and the valleys went down—
to the place you appointed for them.[i]
9 You set up a boundary for them that they could not cross,
so that they would not cover the earth again.[j]
10 He turns springs into streams;[k]
they flow between the mountains.
11 They provide water for all the animals in the field;

during which all the beasts of the forest prowl around.
21 The lions roar for prey,
seeking their food from God.[ab]
22 When the sun rises, they withdraw
and sleep[ac] in their dens.
23 People then go out to do their work,

24 How many living things you have made, O Lord![ae]
You have exhibited great skill in making all of them;[af]
the earth is full of the living things you have made.
25 Over here is the deep, wide sea,[ag]
which teems with innumerable swimming creatures,[ah]
living things both small and large.
26 The ships travel there,
and over here swims the whale[ai] you made to play in it.
27 All your creatures[aj] wait for you
to provide them with food on a regular basis.[ak]
28 You give food to them and they receive it;

When you take away their life’s breath,

- Psalm 104:4 tc Heb “and his attendants a flaming fire.” The lack of agreement between the singular “fire” and plural “attendants” has prompted various emendations. Some read “fire and flame.” The present translation assumes an emendation from מְשָׁרְתָיו (mesharetayv, “his attendants”) to מְשָׁרְתוֹ (meshareto, “his attendant”), a reading supported by one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, 4Q93.sn In Ugaritic mythology Yam’s messengers appear as flaming fire before the assembly of the gods. See G. R. Driver, Canaanite Myths and Legends, 42.
- Psalm 104:6 tc Heb “you covered it.” The masculine suffix is problematic if the grammatically feminine noun “earth” is the antecedent. For this reason some emend the form from כִּסִּיתוֹ (kissito) to a feminine verb with feminine suffix, כִּסַּתָּה (kissattah, “[the watery deep] covered it [i.e., the earth]”), a reading assumed by the present translation.
- Psalm 104:6 tn Heb “stood.”
- Psalm 104:6 sn Verse 6 refers to the condition described in Gen 1:2 (note the use of the Hebrew term תְּהוֹם [tehom, “watery deep”] in both texts).
- Psalm 104:8 tn Heb “from your shout they fled, from the sound of your thunder they hurried off.”sn Verses 7-8 poetically depict Gen 1:9-10.
- Psalm 104:9 tn Heb “a boundary you set up, they will not cross, they will not return to cover the earth.”
- Psalm 104:10 tn Heb “[the] one who sends springs into streams.” Another option is to translate, “he sends streams [i.e., streams that originate from springs] into the valleys” (cf. NIV).

- Psalm 104:15 tn Heb “to make [the] face shine from oil.” The Hebrew verb צָהַל (tsahal, “to shine”) occurs only here in the OT. It appears to be an alternate form of צָהַר (tsahar), a derivative from צָהָרִים (tsaharim, “noon”).
- Psalm 104:15 tn Heb “and food [that] sustains the heart of man.”
- Psalm 104:16 sn The trees of the Lord are the cedars of Lebanon (see the next line), which are viewed as special because of their great size and grandeur. The Lebanon forest was viewed elsewhere in the OT as the “garden of God” (see Ezek 31:8).
- Psalm 104:16 tn Heb “are satisfied,” which means here that they receive abundant rain (see v. 13).
- Psalm 104:17 tn Heb “[the] heron [in the] evergreens [is] its home.”sn The cedars and evergreens of the Lebanon forest are frequently associated (see, for example, 2 Chr 2:8; Isa 14:8; 37:24; Ezek 31:8).
- Psalm 104:18 tn Heb “the high mountains [are] for the goats.”
- Psalm 104:19 tn Heb “he made [the] moon for appointed times.” The phrase “appointed times” probably refers to the months of the Hebrew lunar calendar.

- Psalm 104:21 sn The lions’ roaring is viewed as a request for food from God.

- Psalm 104:27 tn Heb “All of them.” The pronoun “them” refers not just to the sea creatures mentioned in vv. 25-26, but to all living things (see v. 24). This has been specified in the translation as “all of your creatures” for clarity.
- Psalm 104:27 tn Heb “to give their food in its time.”
- Psalm 104:28 tn Heb “they are satisfied [with] good.”
- Psalm 104:29 tn Heb “you hide your face, they are terrified.”
- Psalm 104:31 tn Heb “be forever.”
