104 ¡Bendice, alma mía, a Jehová!

Jehová, Dios mío, mucho te has engrandecido;
te has vestido de gloria y de magnificencia:
2 el que se cubre de luz como de vestidura,
que extiende los cielos como una cortina,
3 que establece sus aposentos entre las aguas,
el que pone las nubes por su carroza,
el que anda sobre las alas del viento,
4 el que hace a los vientos sus mensajeros
y a las llamas de fuego sus ministros.

5 Él fundó la tierra sobre sus cimientos;
no será jamás removida.
6 Con el abismo, como con vestido, la cubriste;
sobre los montes estaban las aguas.
7 A tu reprensión huyeron;
al sonido de tu trueno se apresuraron;
8 subieron los montes, descendieron los valles
al lugar que tú les fijaste.
9 Les pusiste un límite, el cual no traspasarán,
ni volverán a cubrir la tierra.

10 Tú eres el que viertes los manantiales en los arroyos;
van entre los montes,
11 dan de beber a todas las bestias del campo,
mitigan su sed los asnos monteses.
12 En sus orillas habitan las aves del cielo;
¡cantan entre las ramas!
13 Él riega los montes desde sus aposentos;
del fruto de sus obras se sacia la tierra.
14 Él hace brotar el heno para las bestias
y la hierba para el servicio del hombre,
para sacar el pan de la tierra,
15 el vino que alegra el corazón del hombre,
el aceite que hace brillar el rostro
y el pan que sustenta la vida del hombre.
16 Se llenan de savia los árboles de Jehová,
los cedros del Líbano que él plantó.
17 Allí anidan las aves;
en las hayas hace su casa la cigüeña.
18 Los montes altos son para las cabras monteses;
las peñas, para madrigueras de los conejos.
19 Hizo la luna para los tiempos;
el sol conoce su ocaso.
20 Pones las tinieblas, y es de noche;
en ella corretean todas las bestias de la selva.
21 Los leoncillos rugen tras la presa
y reclaman de Dios su comida.
22 Sale el sol, se recogen
y se echan en sus cuevas.
23 Sale el hombre a su labor
y a su labranza hasta la tarde.

24 ¡Cuán innumerables son tus obras, Jehová!
Hiciste todas ellas con sabiduría;
¡la tierra está llena de tus beneficios!
25 He allí el grande y ancho mar,
en donde se mueven seres innumerables,
seres pequeños y grandes.
26 Allí lo surcan las naves;
allí este Leviatán que hiciste para que jugara en él.

27 Todos ellos esperan en ti,
para que les des la comida a su tiempo.
28 Tú les das y ellos recogen;
abres tu mano y se sacian de bien.
29 Escondes tu rostro, se turban;
les quitas el hálito, dejan de ser
y vuelven al polvo.
30 Envías tu espíritu, son creados
y renuevas la faz de la tierra.

31 ¡Sea la gloria de Jehová para siempre!
¡Alégrese Jehová en sus obras!
32 Él mira a la tierra y ella tiembla;
toca los montes y humean.
33 A Jehová cantaré en mi vida;
a mi Dios cantaré salmos mientras viva.
34 Dulce será mi meditación en él;
yo me regocijaré en Jehová.
35 ¡Sean consumidos de la tierra los pecadores
y los impíos dejen de ser!

Señor mi Dios, tú eres grandioso;
    te has revestido de gloria y majestad.

2 Te cubres[a] de luz como con un manto;
    extiendes los cielos como una cortina.
3 Afirmas sobre las aguas tus altos aposentos
    y haces de las nubes tu carro de guerra.
    Tú cabalgas en las alas del viento.
4 Haces de los vientos tus mensajeros[b]
    y de las llamas de fuego tus servidores.

5 Tú pusiste la tierra sobre sus cimientos
    y de allí jamás caerá;
6 la revestiste con el mar
    y las aguas se detuvieron sobre los montes.
7 Pero a tu reprensión huyeron las aguas;
    ante el estruendo de tu voz se dieron a la fuga.
8 Ascendieron a los montes,
    descendieron a los valles,
    al lugar que tú les asignaste.
9 Pusiste una frontera que ellas no pueden cruzar,
    para que no vuelvan a cubrir la tierra.

10 Tú haces que los manantiales viertan sus aguas en las cañadas
    y que fluyan entre las montañas.
11 De ellas beben todas las bestias del campo;
    allí los asnos salvajes calman su sed.
12 Las aves del cielo anidan junto a las aguas
    y cantan entre el follaje.
13 Desde tus altos aposentos riegas las montañas;
    la tierra se sacia con el fruto de tu trabajo.
14 Haces que crezca la hierba para el ganado
    y las plantas que la gente cultiva
    para sacar de la tierra su alimento:
15 el vino que alegra el corazón humano,
    el aceite que hace brillar el rostro
    y el pan que sustenta la vida.
16 Los árboles del Señor reciben su riego,
    los cedros del Líbano que él plantó.
17 Allí las aves hacen sus nidos;
    en los cipreses tiene su hogar la cigüeña.
18 En las altas montañas están las cabras monteses
    y en los escarpados peñascos tienen su madriguera los tejones.

19 Él hizo la luna, que marca las estaciones,
    y el sol, que sabe cuándo ocultarse.
20 Tú traes la oscuridad, cae la noche
    y en sus sombras se arrastran los animales del bosque.
21 Los leones rugen, reclamando su presa,
    pidiendo a Dios que les dé su alimento.
22 Pero al salir el sol se retiran
    y vuelven a echarse en sus guaridas.
23 Sale entonces la gente a cumplir sus tareas,
    a hacer su trabajo hasta la tarde.

24 ¡Oh Señor, cuán numerosas son tus obras!
    Todas ellas las hiciste con sabiduría.
    Rebosa la tierra con todas tus criaturas.
25 Allí está el mar, ancho y vasto,
    que abunda en animales, grandes y pequeños,
    cuyo número es imposible conocer.
26 Allí navegan los barcos, y ese Leviatán
    que tú creaste para jugar con él.

27 Todos ellos esperan de ti
    que a su tiempo les des su alimento.
28 Tú les das y ellos recogen;
    abres tu mano y se colman de bienes.
29 Si escondes tu rostro,
    se aterran;
si les quitas el aliento,
    mueren y vuelven al polvo.
30 Pero si envías tu Espíritu,
    son creados,
    y así renuevas la faz de la tierra.

31 Que la gloria del Señor perdure eternamente;
    que el Señor se regocije en sus obras.
32 Él mira la tierra y la hace temblar;
    toca los montes y los hace echar humo.

33 ¡Cantaré al Señor toda mi vida!
    ¡Cantaré salmos a mi Dios mientras exista!
34 Quiera él agradarse de mi meditación;
    yo, por mi parte, me regocijo en el Señor.
35 Que desaparezcan de la tierra los pecadores
    y que los malvados dejen de existir.

Psalm 104[a]

104 Praise the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, you are magnificent.[b]
You are robed in splendor and majesty.
2 He covers himself with light as if it were a garment.
He stretches out the skies like a tent curtain,
3 and lays the beams of the upper rooms of his palace on the rain clouds.[c]
He makes the clouds his chariot,
and travels on the wings of the wind.[d]
4 He makes the winds his messengers,
and the flaming fire his attendant.[e]
5 He established the earth on its foundations;
it will never be moved.
6 The watery deep covered it[f] like a garment;
the waters reached[g] above the mountains.[h]
7 Your shout made the waters retreat;
at the sound of your thunderous voice they hurried off—
8 as the mountains rose up,
and the valleys went down—
to the place you appointed for them.[i]
9 You set up a boundary for them that they could not cross,
so that they would not cover the earth again.[j]
10 He turns springs into streams;[k]
they flow between the mountains.
11 They provide water for all the animals in the field;
the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 The birds of the sky live beside them;
they chirp among the bushes.[l]
13 He waters the mountains from the upper rooms of his palace;[m]
the earth is full of the fruit you cause to grow.[n]
14 He provides grass[o] for the cattle,
and crops for people to cultivate,[p]
so they can produce food from the ground,[q]
15 as well as wine that makes people glad,[r]
and olive oil to make their faces shine,[s]
as well as bread that sustains them.[t]
16 The trees of the Lord[u] receive all the rain they need,[v]
the cedars of Lebanon that he planted,
17 where the birds make nests,
near the evergreens in which the herons live.[w]
18 The wild goats live in the high mountains;[x]
the rock badgers find safety in the cliffs.
19 He made the moon to mark the months,[y]
and the sun sets according to a regular schedule.[z]
20 You make it dark and night comes,[aa]
during which all the beasts of the forest prowl around.
21 The lions roar for prey,
seeking their food from God.[ab]
22 When the sun rises, they withdraw
and sleep[ac] in their dens.
23 People then go out to do their work,
and they labor until evening.[ad]
24 How many living things you have made, O Lord![ae]
You have exhibited great skill in making all of them;[af]
the earth is full of the living things you have made.
25 Over here is the deep, wide sea,[ag]
which teems with innumerable swimming creatures,[ah]
living things both small and large.
26 The ships travel there,
and over here swims the whale[ai] you made to play in it.
27 All your creatures[aj] wait for you
to provide them with food on a regular basis.[ak]
28 You give food to them and they receive it;
you open your hand and they are filled with food.[al]
29 When you ignore them, they panic.[am]
When you take away their life’s breath,
they die and return to dust.
30 When you send your life-giving breath, they are created,
and you replenish the surface of the ground.
31 May the splendor of the Lord endure.[an]
May the Lord find pleasure in the living things he has made.[ao]
32 He looks down on the earth and it shakes;
he touches the mountains and they start to smolder.
33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I exist.[ap]
34 May my thoughts[aq] be pleasing to him.
I will rejoice in the Lord.
35 May sinners disappear[ar] from the earth,
and the wicked vanish.
Praise the Lord, O my soul.
Praise the Lord.

  5. Psalm 104:4 tc Heb “and his attendants a flaming fire.” The lack of agreement between the singular “fire” and plural “attendants” has prompted various emendations. Some read “fire and flame.” The present translation assumes an emendation from מְשָׁרְתָיו (mesharetayv, “his attendants”) to מְשָׁרְתוֹ (meshareto, “his attendant”), a reading supported by one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, 4Q93.sn In Ugaritic mythology Yam’s messengers appear as flaming fire before the assembly of the gods. See G. R. Driver, Canaanite Myths and Legends, 42.
  6. Psalm 104:6 tc Heb “you covered it.” The masculine suffix is problematic if the grammatically feminine noun “earth” is the antecedent. For this reason some emend the form from כִּסִּיתוֹ (kissito) to a feminine verb with feminine suffix, כִּסַּתָּה (kissattah, “[the watery deep] covered it [i.e., the earth]”), a reading assumed by the present translation.

  8. Psalm 104:6 sn Verse 6 refers to the condition described in Gen 1:2 (note the use of the Hebrew term תְּהוֹם [tehom, “watery deep”] in both texts).

  16. Psalm 104:14 tn Heb “for the service of man” (see Gen 2:5).
  17. Psalm 104:14 tn Heb “to cause food to come out from the earth.”

  19. Psalm 104:15 tn Heb “to make [the] face shine from oil.” The Hebrew verb צָהַל (tsahal, “to shine”) occurs only here in the OT. It appears to be an alternate form of צָהַר (tsahar), a derivative from צָהָרִים (tsaharim, “noon”).

  21. Psalm 104:16 sn The trees of the Lord are the cedars of Lebanon (see the next line), which are viewed as special because of their great size and grandeur. The Lebanon forest was viewed elsewhere in the OT as the “garden of God” (see Ezek 31:8).
  22. Psalm 104:16 tn Heb “are satisfied,” which means here that they receive abundant rain (see v. 13).

  36. Psalm 104:27 tn Heb “All of them.” The pronoun “them” refers not just to the sea creatures mentioned in vv. 25-26, but to all living things (see v. 24). This has been specified in the translation as “all of your creatures” for clarity.
