Vänd tillbaka till Herren
1 I åttonde månaden av kung Darejaves andra regeringsår kom detta budskap till profeten Sakarja, Berekjas son och Iddos sonson:
2 Herren var mycket vred på era förfäder.
3 Därför vill han att ni ska komma tillbaka till honom så att han kan komma tillbaka till er.
4 Handla inte som era förfäder gjorde! Profeterna på den tiden vädjade ju förgäves till dem att de skulle vända om från sina ogudaktiga vägar.Kom tillbaka till mig, uppmanade Herren dem, men de brydde sig inte om att lyssna och göra som han sa.
5-6 Era förfäder och deras profeter är för länge sedan döda, men kom ihåg vad de fick lära sig: att Guds ord består! Herren tvingades alltså att straffa dem, och till slut gjorde de bättring.Vi har fått vad vi förtjänat, och Gud hade ju varnat oss, sa de.
Mannen bland myrtenträden
7 Den tjugofjärde dagen i elfte månaden samma år kom ett nytt budskap till Sakarja i en syn under natten:
8 Jag såg en man på en röd häst bland myrtenträden vid flodstranden. Bakom honom stod flera röda, bruna och vita hästar med sina ryttare.
9 Bredvid mig stod en ängel, och jag frågade honom: Herre, vad menas med alla dessa hästar? Varför står de här? Det ska jag visa dig, svarade han.
10 Då sa ryttaren på den röda hästen: Herren har sänt dem ut över jorden för hans räkning.
11 Ryttarna på de andra hästarna rapporterade då till Herrens ängel: Vi har besökt hela jorden, och överallt är det lugnt och fridfullt.
12 När han hörde detta bad Herrens ängel: Herre, härskarornas Gud, nu har din vrede mot Jerusalem och Juda städer varat i sjuttio år. Hur länge dröjer det innan du tänker visa barmhärtighet mot dem?
13 Herren svarade ängeln som stod bredvid mig och talade tröstande till honom.
14 Då sa ängeln: Ropa ut detta budskap från Herren: Tror du inte att jag bryr mig om vad som händer med Juda och Jerusalem? Jag har omsorg om Jerusalem, jag älskar min heliga stad.
15 Men jag är verkligen vred på hednafolken som känner sig så säkra, för även om jag bara var missnöjd till en del med mitt folk, så har de plågat mitt folk mer än de borde.
16 Därför säger Herren: Jag har vänt tillbaka till Jerusalem full av barmhärtighet. Mitt tempel ska byggas upp på nytt, men också hela Jerusalem.
17 Säg det igen: Herren, härskarornas Gud, förklarar att Israels städer på nytt ska få välstånd och överflöd, och Herren ska hjälpa Jerusalem och välsigna det och bo där.
Fyra horn och fyra smeder
18 Jag lyfte blicken och fick se fyra horn.
19 Vad är det där för något? frågade jag ängeln.Han svarade: De föreställer de fyra världsriken som har förskingrat Juda, Israel och Jerusalem.
20 Sedan visade Herren mig fyra smeder.
21 Vad ska dessa män göra? frågade jag.Ängeln svarade: De föreställer de riken som gjorde slut på de fyra hornens makt och har kommit för att bearbeta dem på städet och sedan kasta bort dem.

Uppmaning till omvändelse
1 I åttonde månaden[a] av Darejaves andra regeringsår kom Herrens ord till profeten Sakarja, son till Berekja, son till Iddo. Han sade:
2 Herren var vred på era fäder. 3 Säg därför till folket: Så säger Herren Sebaot: Vänd om till mig, säger Herren Sebaot, så skall jag vända om till er, säger Herren Sebaot. 4 Var inte som era fäder. För dem predikade gångna tiders profeter och sade: "Så säger Herren Sebaot: Vänd nu om från era onda vägar och era onda gärningar. Men de lyssnade inte och aktade inte på mig, säger Herren.
5 Era fäder, var är de?
Och profeterna, lever de kvar för evigt?
6 Nej, men mina ord och mina stadgar
som jag gav mina tjänare profeterna,
de nådde era fäder.
Och de vände om och sade:
Som Herren Sebaot hade beslutat att göra med oss
enligt våra vägar och våra gärningar,
så har han också handlat med oss."
Mannen på den röda hästen
7 På tjugofjärde dagen i elfte månaden,[b] som är månaden Sebat, i Darejaves andra regeringsår, kom Herrens ord till profeten Sakarja, son till Berekja, son till Iddo. Han sade:
8 Jag hade en syn om natten, och se, en man red på en röd häst. Han stod bland myrtenträden i dalsänkan. Bakom honom stod andra hästar, röda, bruna och vita. 9 Jag frågade: "Min herre, vilka är dessa?" Ängeln som talade med mig sade: "Jag vill låta dig se vilka de är." 10 Mannen som stod bland myrtenträden svarade: "Det är dessa som Herren har sänt att fara omkring på jorden." 11 Och de svarade Herrens ängel som stod bland myrtenträden: "Vi har farit omkring på jorden, och se, hela jorden är lugn och stilla."
Herren skall trösta Sion
12 Då sade Herrens ängel: " Herre Sebaot, hur länge skall det dröja innan du förbarmar dig över Jerusalem och Juda städer? Du har visat din förbittring mot dem nu i sjuttio år." 13 Herren svarade den ängel som talade med mig, med goda och tröstande ord. 14 Och ängeln som talade med mig sade sedan: "Ropa ut: Så säger Herren Sebaot:
Jag nitälskar för Jerusalem
och brinner av nit för Sion.
15 Jag är mycket vred på hednafolken som sitter så säkra,
ty medan jag endast var lite vred
hjälpte de ondskan att förökas.
16 Därför säger Herren så:
Jag har vänt tillbaka till Jerusalem i barmhärtighet.
Mitt hus skall byggas där,
säger Herren Sebaot,
och mätsnöret skall spännas över Jerusalem.
17 Ropa ut än en gång:
Så säger Herren Sebaot:
Än en gång skall mina städer flöda över av det som är gott.
Herren skall än en gång trösta Sion,
än en gång skall han utvälja Jerusalem."
Hornen och smederna
18 Och jag lyfte upp ögonen och såg, och se, där var fyra horn. 19 Jag frågade ängeln som talade med mig: "Vad betyder dessa?" Han svarade mig: "Det är dessa horn som har skingrat Juda, Israel och Jerusalem."
20 Och Herren lät mig se fyra smeder. 21 Jag frågade: "Varför har dessa kommit och vad skall de göra?" Han svarade: "Där är de horn som skingrade Juda, så att ingen kunde lyfta upp huvudet. Men smederna har kommit för att förskräcka dem och slå av hornen på de hednafolk som har lyft sitt horn mot Juda land, för att skingra dem som bor där."

2 The Lord hath been sore displeased with your fathers.
3 Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.
4 Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord.
5 Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?
6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the Lord of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
7 Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,
8 I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.
9 Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.
10 And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the Lord hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.
11 And they answered the angel of the Lord that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
12 Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?
13 And the Lord answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.
14 So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.
15 And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the Lord of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.
17 Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the Lord shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.
18 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.
19 And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
20 And the Lord shewed me four carpenters.
21 Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.

A Call to Return to the Lord
1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,(A) the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah(B) son of Berekiah,(C) the son of Iddo:(D)
2 “The Lord was very angry(E) with your ancestors. 3 Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return(F) to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’(G) says the Lord Almighty. 4 Do not be like your ancestors,(H) to whom the earlier prophets(I) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways(J) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,(K) declares the Lord.(L) 5 Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6 But did not my words(M) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?(N)
“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,(O) just as he determined to do.’”(P)
The Man Among the Myrtle Trees
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.(Q)
8 During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red(R) horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.(S)
9 I asked, “What are these, my lord?”
The angel(T) who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.”(U)
10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.”(V)
11 And they reported to the angel of the Lord(W) who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.”(X)
12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord Almighty, how long(Y) will you withhold mercy(Z) from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah,(AA) which you have been angry with these seventy(AB) years?” 13 So the Lord spoke(AC) kind and comforting words(AD) to the angel who talked with me.(AE)
14 Then the angel who was speaking to me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous(AF) for Jerusalem and Zion, 15 and I am very angry with the nations that feel secure.(AG) I was only a little angry,(AH) but they went too far with the punishment.’(AI)
16 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will return(AJ) to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line(AK) will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the Lord Almighty.(AL)
17 “Proclaim further: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort(AM) Zion and choose(AN) Jerusalem.’”(AO)
Four Horns and Four Craftsmen
18 Then I looked up, and there before me were four horns. 19 I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these?”
He answered me, “These are the horns(AP) that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.”
20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 I asked, “What are these coming to do?”
He answered, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise their head, but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations who lifted up their horns(AQ) against the land of Judah to scatter its people.”[a](AR)
