Ruth wird Boas’ Frau und Stammmutter des Hauses David
4 Boas aber war zum Stadttor hinaufgegangen und hatte sich dort niedergesetzt; und siehe, da ging der Löser vorüber, von dem Boas geredet hatte. Da sprach er: Komm, setze dich her, du Soundso! Und er kam herbei und setzte sich.
2 Und Boas nahm zehn Männer von den Ältesten der Stadt und sprach: Setzt euch hierher! Und sie setzten sich.
3 Da sprach er zu dem Löser: Naemi, die aus dem Gebiet von Moab zurückgekommen ist, verkauft das Stück Feld, das unserem Bruder Elimelech gehörte.
4 Darum gedachte ich dir den Vorschlag zu machen: Wenn du es lösen willst, so kaufe es vor den Bürgern und vor den Ältesten meines Volkes; willst du es aber nicht lösen, so sage es mir, damit ich es weiß; denn es gibt niemand, der es lösen kann, ausgenommen du, und ich nach dir! Und er sprach: Ich will es lösen!
5 Da sagte Boas: An dem Tag, da du das Feld aus der Hand Naemis kaufst, erwirbst du [es] auch von Ruth, der Moabiterin, der Frau des Verstorbenen, um den Namen des Verstorbenen auf seinem Erbteil wieder aufzurichten.
6 Da sprach der Löser: Ich kann es nicht für mich lösen, ohne mein eigenes Erbteil zu verderben! Löse du für dich, was ich lösen sollte; denn ich kann es nicht lösen!
7 Es war aber von alters her Sitte in Israel, bei der Lösung und beim Tausch die ganze Sache so gültig zu machen: Der eine zog seinen Schuh aus und gab ihn dem anderen. Das war die Bestätigung in Israel.
8 So sprach nun der Löser zu Boas: Kaufe du es für dich!, und zog seinen Schuh aus.
9 Da sprach Boas zu den Ältesten und zu dem ganzen Volk: Ihr seid heute Zeugen, dass ich aus der Hand Naemis alles erworben habe, was Elimelech, und alles, was Kiljon und Machlon gehörte.
10 Dazu habe ich mir Ruth, die Moabiterin, die Frau Machlons, zur Ehefrau erworben, um den Namen des Verstorbenen auf seinem Erbteil wieder aufzurichten, damit der Name des Verstorbenen nicht verschwinde aus der Mitte seiner Brüder und aus dem Tor seines Ortes. Ihr seid heute Zeugen!
11 Da sprach das ganze Volk, das im Stadttor stand, und die Ältesten: Wir sind Zeugen! Der Herr mache die Frau, die in dein Haus kommt, wie Rahel und Lea, die beide das Haus Israel gebaut haben! Werde mächtig[a] in Ephrata und mache dir einen Namen in Bethlehem!
12 Und dein Haus werde wie das Haus des Perez, den die Tamar dem Juda gebar, durch den Samen[b], den dir der Herr von dieser jungen Frau geben wird!
13 So nahm Boas die Ruth, und sie wurde seine Frau, und er ging zu ihr ein. Der Herr aber gab ihr, dass sie schwanger wurde und einen Sohn gebar.
14 Da sprachen die Frauen zu Naemi: Gepriesen sei der Herr, der dir zu dieser Zeit einen Löser nicht versagt hat! Sein Name werde gerühmt in Israel!
15 Der wird nun deine Seele erquicken und dich in deinem Alter versorgen; denn deine Schwiegertochter, die dich liebt, hat ihn geboren, sie, die dir mehr wert ist als sieben Söhne!
16 Und Naemi nahm das Kind und legte es in ihren Schoß und wurde seine Pflegerin[c].

17 Und ihre Nachbarinnen gaben ihm einen Namen und sprachen: Der Naemi ist ein Sohn geboren! Und sie gaben ihm den Namen Obed[d]. Der ist der Vater Isais, des Vaters Davids.
18 Und dies ist der Stammbaum des Perez: Perez zeugte Hezron,
19 Hezron zeugte Ram, Ram zeugte Amminadab,
20 Amminadab zeugte Nachschon, Nachschon zeugte Salmon,
21 Salmon zeugte Boas, Boas zeugte Obed,
22 Obed zeugte Isai, Isai zeugte David.

The Marriage of Ruth
4 Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, (A)the [a]close relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, so he said, “Turn aside, [b]friend, sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. 2 He took ten men of the (B)elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3 Then he said to the [c]closest relative, “Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, has to sell the piece of land (C)which belonged to our brother Elimelech. 4 So I thought to [d]inform you, saying, ‘(D)Buy it before those who are sitting here, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if [e]not, tell me that I may know; for (E)there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order (F)to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.” 6 (G)The [f]closest relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, because I would [g]jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem it for yourself; you may have my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it.”
7 Now this was (H)the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. 8 So the [h]closest relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10 Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so (I)that the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the [i]court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.” 11 All the people who were in the [j]court, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home (J)like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve [k]wealth in Ephrathah and [l]become famous in Bethlehem. 12 Moreover, may your house be like the house of (K)Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the [m]offspring which the Lord will give you by this young woman.”
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her. And (L)the Lord [n]enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 Then the (M)women said to Naomi, “Blessed is the Lord who has not left you without a [o]redeemer today, and may his name [p]become famous in Israel. 15 May he also be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you [q](N)and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

16 Then Naomi took the child [r]and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse. 17 The neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!” So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18 Now these are the generations of Perez: (O)to Perez [s]was born Hezron, 19 and to Hezron was born Ram, and to Ram, Amminadab, 20 and to Amminadab was born Nahshon, and to Nahshon, Salmon, 21 and to Salmon was born Boaz, and to Boaz, Obed, 22 and to Obed was born Jesse, and to Jesse, David.

Boaz Marries Ruth
4 Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate(A) and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer[a](B) he had mentioned(C) came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.
2 Boaz took ten of the elders(D) of the town and said, “Sit here,” and they did so.(E) 3 Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek.(F) 4 I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you[b] will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you,(G) and I am next in line.”
“I will redeem it,” he said.
5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite,(H) the[c] dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.”(I)
6 At this, the guardian-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem(J) it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.”(K)
7 (Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption(L) and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal(M) and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions(N) in Israel.)(O)
8 So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal.(P)
9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses(Q) that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite,(R) Mahlon’s widow, as my wife,(S) in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown.(T) Today you are witnesses!(U)”
11 Then the elders and all the people at the gate(V) said, “We are witnesses.(W) May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah,(X) who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah(Y) and be famous in Bethlehem.(Z) 12 Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez,(AA) whom Tamar(AB) bore to Judah.”
Naomi Gains a Son
13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive,(AC) and she gave birth to a son.(AD) 14 The women(AE) said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord,(AF) who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer.(AG) May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law,(AH) who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons,(AI) has given him birth.”
16 Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. 17 The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse,(AJ) the father of David.(AK)
