Ruth at the Threshing Floor
3 One day Naomi said to Ruth, “My daughter, it’s time that I found a permanent home for you, so that you will be provided for. 2 Boaz is a close relative of ours, and he’s been very kind by letting you gather grain with his young women. Tonight he will be winnowing barley at the threshing floor. 3 Now do as I tell you—take a bath and put on perfume and dress in your nicest clothes. Then go to the threshing floor, but don’t let Boaz see you until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 Be sure to notice where he lies down; then go and uncover his feet and lie down there. He will tell you what to do.”
5 “I will do everything you say,” Ruth replied. 6 So she went down to the threshing floor that night and followed the instructions of her mother-in-law.
7 After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he lay down at the far end of the pile of grain and went to sleep. Then Ruth came quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. 8 Around midnight Boaz suddenly woke up and turned over. He was surprised to find a woman lying at his feet! 9 “Who are you?” he asked.
“I am your servant Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your covering over me, for you are my family redeemer.”
10 “The Lord bless you, my daughter!” Boaz exclaimed. “You are showing even more family loyalty now than you did before, for you have not gone after a younger man, whether rich or poor. 11 Now don’t worry about a thing, my daughter. I will do what is necessary, for everyone in town knows you are a virtuous woman. 12 But while it’s true that I am one of your family redeemers, there is another man who is more closely related to you than I am. 13 Stay here tonight, and in the morning I will talk to him. If he is willing to redeem you, very well. Let him marry you. But if he is not willing, then as surely as the Lord lives, I will redeem you myself! Now lie down here until morning.”
14 So Ruth lay at Boaz’s feet until the morning, but she got up before it was light enough for people to recognize each other. For Boaz had said, “No one must know that a woman was here at the threshing floor.” 15 Then Boaz said to her, “Bring your cloak and spread it out.” He measured six scoops[a] of barley into the cloak and placed it on her back. Then he[b] returned to the town.
16 When Ruth went back to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “What happened, my daughter?”
Ruth told Naomi everything Boaz had done for her, 17 and she added, “He gave me these six scoops of barley and said, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”
18 Then Naomi said to her, “Just be patient, my daughter, until we hear what happens. The man won’t rest until he has settled things today.”

3 Noémi, la belle-mère de Ruth, lui dit un jour : Ma fille, je ne veux pas négliger de te chercher une situation qui te rende heureuse. 2 Tu sais que Booz, avec les servantes duquel tu as travaillé, est notre parent. Ce soir il doit vanner l’orge amassée dans l’aire. 3 Lave-toi donc et parfume-toi, puis mets tes plus beaux habits et rends-toi à l’aire où il bat son orge[a]. Mais ne fais pas connaître ta présence avant qu’il ait fini de manger et de boire. 4 Quand il se couchera pour dormir, note bien l’endroit où il s’installe, approche-toi, écarte la couverture pour lui découvrir les pieds et puis, couche-toi là. Il te dira alors ce que tu devras faire.
5 Ruth lui répondit : Je ferai tout ce que tu me dis.
6 Elle descendit dans l’aire et suivit toutes les instructions de sa belle-mère. 7 Booz mangea et but et il fut très content, puis il alla se coucher au bord du tas d’orge. Alors Ruth s’approcha tout doucement, elle écarta la couverture pour découvrir ses pieds et se coucha là. 8 Au milieu de la nuit, Booz eut un frisson, il se pencha en avant et s’aperçut qu’une femme était couchée à ses pieds.
9 – Qui es-tu ? lui demanda-t-il.
– Je suis Ruth, ta servante. Veuille me prendre sous ta protection[b] car, en tant que proche parent, tu es responsable de moi.
10 – Que l’Eternel te bénisse, ma fille, lui dit-il. Ce que tu viens de faire est une preuve d’amour envers ta belle-mère encore plus grande que ce que tu as déjà fait. En effet, tu aurais pu courir après les jeunes hommes, qu’ils soient pauvres ou riches. 11 Maintenant, ma fille, ne t’inquiète pas : je ferai pour toi tout ce que tu demandes, car tous les gens de l’endroit savent que tu es une femme de valeur. 12 Il est vrai que j’ai envers toi la responsabilité d’un proche parent, mais il existe un parent plus direct que moi. 13 Passe ici la fin de la nuit, et demain matin nous verrons si cet homme veut s’acquitter envers toi de sa responsabilité de proche parent. Si oui, qu’il le fasse. S’il refuse, je te promets, aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant[c], que je m’en acquitterai envers toi. En attendant, reste couchée jusqu’au matin !
14 Elle resta couchée à ses pieds jusqu’au matin, puis elle se leva au petit jour avant que l’on puisse se reconnaître, car Booz avait dit : Il ne faut pas que l’on sache qu’une femme est venue sur l’aire. 15 Avant qu’elle parte, il lui dit : Donne la cape que tu portes, tiens-la bien !
Elle la tint ainsi, et il y versa vingt-cinq litres d’orge et l’aida à les charger sur elle, puis elle rentra à la ville[d].
16 Quand elle arriva chez sa belle-mère, celle-ci lui demanda : Comment les choses se sont-elles passées, ma fille ?
Alors Ruth lui raconta tout ce que cet homme avait fait pour elle. 17 Elle ajouta : Il m’a même donné ces vingt-cinq litres d’orge, car il m’a dit : « Tu ne retourneras pas les mains vides auprès de ta belle-mère. »
18 Noémi lui dit : Maintenant, ma fille, reste là jusqu’à ce que tu saches comment les choses tourneront, car cet homme ne se donnera aucun répit avant d’avoir réglé cette affaire aujourd’hui.

- 3.3 L’orge était battue par les animaux durant la journée. On profitait de la brise du soir pour la vanner : on jetait en l’air des pelletées de grains mélangés à la paille et à la bale. Le vent emportait ces dernières, le grain, plus lourd, retombait sur l’aire.
- 3.9 Voir 2.12. Littéralement : Etends sur moi ton aile ou le pan de ton manteau (même mot) : en signe de protection matrimoniale. Lors du mariage, le marié étendait un pan de son manteau au-dessus de sa fiancée pour symboliser cette protection.

Ruth’s Redemption Assured
3 Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, (A)shall I not seek (B)security[a] for you, that it may be well with you? 2 Now Boaz, (C)whose young women you were with, is he not our relative? In fact, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. 3 Therefore wash yourself and (D)anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 Then it shall be, when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies; and you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down; and he will tell you what you should do.”
5 And she said to her, “All that you say to me I will do.”
6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law instructed her. 7 And after Boaz had eaten and drunk, and (E)his heart was cheerful, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
8 Now it happened at midnight that the man was startled, and turned himself; and there, a woman was lying at his feet. 9 And he said, “Who are you?”
So she answered, “I am Ruth, your maidservant. (F)Take[b] your maidservant under your wing, for you are (G)a [c]close relative.”
10 Then he said, (H)“Blessed are you of the Lord, my daughter! For you have shown more kindness at the end than (I)at the beginning, in that you did not go after young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a (J)virtuous woman. 12 Now it is true that I am a (K)close relative; however, (L)there is a relative closer than I. 13 Stay this night, and in the morning it shall be that if he will (M)perform the duty of a close relative for you—good; let him do it. But if he does not want to perform the duty for you, then I will perform the duty for you, (N)as the Lord lives! Lie down until morning.”
14 So she lay at his feet until morning, and she arose before one could recognize another. Then he said, (O)“Do not let it be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.” 15 Also he said, “Bring the [d]shawl that is on you and hold it.” And when she held it, he measured six ephahs of barley, and laid it on her. Then [e]she went into the city.
16 When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, [f]“Is that you, my daughter?”
Then she told her all that the man had done for her. 17 And she said, “These six ephahs of barley he gave me; for he said to me, ‘Do not go empty-handed to your mother-in-law.’ ”
18 Then she said, (P)“Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will turn out; for the man will not rest until he has concluded the matter this day.”
