Ruth Gathers Grain in the Field of Boaz
2 Naomi had a relative. He was from Elimelech’s side of the family. He was a man of outstanding character named Boaz.
2 Ruth, who was from Moab, said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field of anyone who will be kind to me. There I will gather the grain left behind by the reapers.”
Naomi told her, “Go, my daughter.”
3 So Ruth went. She entered a field and gathered the grain left behind by the reapers. Now it happened that she ended up in the part of the field that belonged to Boaz, who was from Elimelech’s family.
4 Just then, Boaz was coming from Bethlehem, and he said to his reapers, “May the Lord be with all of you!”
They answered him, “May the Lord bless you!”
5 Boaz asked the young man in charge of his reapers, “Who is this young woman?”
6 The young man answered, “She’s a young Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. 7 She said, ‘Please let me gather grain. I will only gather among the bundles behind the reapers.’ So she came here and has been on her feet from daybreak until now. She just sat down this minute in the shelter.”
Boaz Speaks with Ruth
8 Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter. Don’t go in any other field to gather grain, and don’t even leave this one. Stay here with my young women. 9 Watch where my men are reaping, and follow the young women in that field. I have ordered my young men not to touch you. When you’re thirsty, go to the jars and drink some of the water that the young men have drawn.”
10 Ruth immediately bowed down to the ground and said to him, “Why are you so helpful? Why are you paying attention to me? I’m only a foreigner.”
11 Boaz answered her, “People have told me about everything you have done for your mother-in-law after your husband died. They told me how you left your father and mother and the country where you were born. They also told me how you came to people that you didn’t know before. 12 May the Lord reward you for what you have done! May you receive a rich reward from the Lord God of Israel, under whose protection you have come for shelter.”
13 Ruth replied, “Sir, may your kindness to me continue. You have comforted me and reassured me, and I’m not even one of your own servants.”
14 When it was time to eat, Boaz told her, “Come here. Have some bread, and dip it into the sour wine.” So she sat beside the reapers, and he handed her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.
15 When she got up to gather grain, Boaz ordered his servants, “Let her gather grain even among the bundles. Don’t give her any problems. 16 Even pull some grain out of the bundles and leave it for her to gather. Don’t give her a hard time about it.”

17 So Ruth gathered grain in the field until evening. Then she separated the grain from its husks. She had about half a bushel of barley. 18 She picked it up and went into the town, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gathered. Ruth also took out what she had left over from lunch and gave it to Naomi.
19 Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you gather grain today? Just where did you work? May the man who paid attention to you be blessed.”
So Ruth told her mother-in-law about the person with whom she worked. She said, “The man I worked with today is named Boaz.”
20 Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May the Lord bless him. The Lord hasn’t stopped being kind to people—living or dead.” Then Naomi told her, “That man is a relative of ours. He is a close relative, one of those responsible for taking care of us.”
21 Ruth, who was from Moab, told her, “He also said to me, ‘Stay with my younger workers until they have finished the harvest.’ ”
22 Naomi told her daughter-in-law Ruth, “It’s a good idea, my daughter, that you go out to the fields with his young women. If you go to someone else’s field, you may be molested.”
23 So Ruth stayed with the young women who were working for Boaz. She gathered grain until both the barley harvest and the wheat harvest ended. And she continued to live with her mother-in-law.

2 In Betlehem woonde een rijke man die familie was van Naomi's man Elimelech. Hij heette Boaz. 2 Ruth zei tegen Naomi: "Laat mij naar een akker gaan om graan te zoeken.[a] Er is vast wel iemand die het goed vindt dat ik de halmen opraap die bij het oogsten op de grond zijn gevallen." Naomi antwoordde: "Dat is goed." 3 Ruth ging naar een akker en raapte de halmen op die achter de maaiers op het veld waren blijven liggen. Toevallig was ze op het veld van Boaz, die familie van Elimelech was.
4 Boaz kwam uit Betlehem naar zijn akker en groette de maaiers: "Gods zegen!" Ze antwoordden hem: "Gods zegen!" 5 Toen vroeg Boaz aan de knecht die toezicht hield op de maaiers: "Bij wie hoort die jonge vrouw?" 6 De knecht antwoordde: "Dat is die jonge vrouw uit Moab die met Naomi is meegekomen. 7 Ze heeft me gevraagd: 'Mag ik alsjeblieft oprapen wat de maaiers laten vallen?' Ze is al vanaf vanmorgen vroeg bezig. Ze heeft nog helemaal niet gerust."
8 Toen zei Boaz tegen Ruth: "Hoor eens, meisje, je hoeft niet naar een andere akker te gaan. Blijf hier maar werken bij de andere vrouwen. 9 Blijf op het veld dat gemaaid wordt en verzamel daar graan. Ik zal tegen de knechten zeggen dat ze je met rust moeten laten. En als je dorst hebt, kun je water gaan drinken uit de kruiken die de knechten hebben gevuld met water uit de put." 10 Ze liet zich voor hem op haar knieën vallen, boog zich diep en zei: "Ik ben hier maar een vreemdeling. Waarom bent u dan toch zo vriendelijk voor me?" 11 Boaz antwoordde: "Ze hebben me alles verteld wat je voor je schoonmoeder hebt gedaan nadat je man is gestorven. Dat je je ouders en je eigen land hebt verlaten om met haar mee te gaan naar een onbekend volk. 12 De Heer zal je daarvoor belonen. De God van Israël zal het je terugbetalen. Want je bent bij Hem komen schuilen." 13 Toen zei Ruth: "U bent wel heel vriendelijk voor mij, mijn heer. Uw woorden troosten mij. U heeft mij weer hoop gegeven, ook al hoor ik niet bij de vrouwen die voor u werken."
14 Toen het etenstijd was, zei Boaz tegen haar: "Kom bij ons zitten en eet met ons mee. Je mag je brood bij ons in de wijn dopen." Ze ging bij de maaiers zitten en kreeg van Boaz geroosterd graan. Ze kon eten tot ze genoeg had en hield zelfs nog over. 15 Toen ze was opgestaan om verder te werken, zei Boaz tegen de knechten: "Laat haar ook graan verzamelen tussen het koren dat jullie al in bossen gebonden hebben. Zorg dat ze genoeg vindt. 16 Laat bij het werk af en toe expres wat voor haar op de grond vallen. Dan kan ze dat oprapen. En laat haar met rust." 17 Zo verzamelde ze graan tot het avond werd. Toen ze het graan uit de halmen had geklopt, bleek dat ze wel een efa (30 kilo) gerst had verzameld.
18 Ze nam alles mee naar huis en liet haar schoonmoeder zien hoeveel ze verzameld had. Ook bracht ze geroosterd graan mee. Dat had ze overgehouden van de middagmaaltijd die Boaz haar had gegeven. Toen vroeg Naomi: 19 "Waar ben je vandaag dan geweest? Bij wie heb je gewerkt? God zal de man belonen die zo goed voor je is geweest!" Ruth vertelde: "De man bij wie ik heb gewerkt, heet Boaz." 20 Toen zei Naomi: "Ik dank de Heer dat Hij goed is voor ons en onze gestorven mannen! Boaz is familie van ons. Daarom is hij verantwoordelijk voor ons. Hij moet voor ons zorgen nu onze mannen niet meer leven." 21 En Ruth vertelde: "Hij heeft tegen me gezegd dat ik bij zijn knechten mag blijven werken totdat de hele oogst is binnengehaald." 22 Naomi zei: "Het is goed dat je bij hem gaat werken. Dan hoef je niet naar een andere akker te gaan waar de mensen misschien vervelend tegen je zijn." 23 Zo bleef ze bij Boaz korenhalmen rapen. Ze werkte daar totdat de hele oogst binnen was. En ze bleef bij haar schoonmoeder wonen.

Ruth Meets Boaz
2 There was a (A)relative of Naomi’s husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of (B)Elimelech. His name was (C)Boaz. 2 So Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the (D)field, and glean heads of grain after him in whose sight I may find favor.”
And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.”
3 Then she left, and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.
4 Now behold, Boaz came from (E)Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, (F)“The Lord be with you!”
And they answered him, “The Lord bless you!”
5 Then Boaz said to his servant who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?”
6 So the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered and said, “It is the young Moabite woman (G)who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. 7 And she said, ‘Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.’ So she came and has continued from morning until now, though she rested a little in the house.”
8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, “You will listen, my daughter, will you not? Do not go to glean in another field, nor go from here, but stay close by my young women. 9 Let your eyes be on the field which they reap, and go after them. Have I not commanded the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn.”
10 So she (H)fell on her face, bowed down to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found (I)favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?”
11 And Boaz answered and said to her, “It has been fully reported to me, (J)all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know before. 12 (K)The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel, (L)under whose wings you have come for refuge.”
13 Then she said, (M)“Let me find favor in your sight, my lord; for you have comforted me, and have spoken [a]kindly to your maidservant, (N)though I am not like one of your maidservants.”
14 Now Boaz said to her at mealtime, “Come here, and eat of the bread, and dip your piece of bread in the vinegar.” So she sat beside the reapers, and he passed parched grain to her; and she ate and (O)was satisfied, and kept some back. 15 And when she rose up to [b]glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, “Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not [c]reproach her. 16 Also let grain from the bundles fall purposely for her; leave it that she may glean, and do not rebuke her.”
17 So she gleaned in the field until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of (P)barley. 18 Then she took it up and went into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned. So she brought out and gave to her (Q)what she had kept back after she had been satisfied.
19 And her mother-in-law said to her, “Where have you gleaned today? And where did you work? Blessed be the one who (R)took notice of you.”
So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, and said, “The man’s name with whom I worked today is Boaz.”
20 Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, (S)“Blessed be he of the Lord, who (T)has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead!” And Naomi said to her, “This man is a relation of ours, (U)one of [d]our close relatives.”
21 Ruth the Moabitess said, “He also said to me, ‘You shall stay close by my young men until they have finished all my harvest.’ ”
22 And Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, and that people do not [e]meet you in any other field.” 23 So she stayed close by the young women of Boaz, to glean until the end of barley harvest and wheat harvest; and she dwelt with her mother-in-law.
