²¹ I went away full,
    but the Lord has brought me back empty;
why call me Naomi
    when the Lord has dealt harshly with^[a] me
    and the Almighty^[b] has brought calamity upon me?”^(A)

⁷ The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
    he brings low; he also exalts.^(A)
8 He raises up the poor from the dust;
    he lifts the needy from the ash heap
to make them sit with princes
    and inherit a seat of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
    and on them he has set the world.^(B)

⁸ And he has^[a] shriveled me up,
    which is a witness against me;
my leanness has risen up against me,
    and it testifies to my face.^(A)

²⁶ For you write bitter things against me
    and make me reap^[a] the iniquities of my youth.^(A)

¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me
    and increase your vexation toward me;
    you bring fresh troops against me.^[a](A)
