The Marriage of Ruth

Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, (A)the [a]close relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, so he said, “Turn aside, [b]friend, sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. He took ten men of the (B)elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. Then he said to the [c]closest relative, “Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, has to sell the piece of land (C)which belonged to our brother Elimelech. So I thought to [d]inform you, saying, ‘(D)Buy it before those who are sitting here, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if [e]not, tell me that I may know; for (E)there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem it.” Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order (F)to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.” (G)The [f]closest relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, because I would [g]jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem it for yourself; you may have my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it.”

Now this was (H)the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. So the [h]closest relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal. Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10 Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so (I)that the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the [i]court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.” 11 All the people who were in the [j]court, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home (J)like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve [k]wealth in Ephrathah and [l]become famous in Bethlehem. 12 Moreover, may your house be like the house of (K)Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the [m]offspring which the Lord will give you by this young woman.”

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her. And (L)the Lord [n]enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 Then the (M)women said to Naomi, “Blessed is the Lord who has not left you without a [o]redeemer today, and may his name [p]become famous in Israel. 15 May he also be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you [q](N)and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

The Line of David Began Here

16 Then Naomi took the child [r]and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse. 17 The neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!” So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these are the generations of Perez: (O)to Perez [s]was born Hezron, 19 and to Hezron was born Ram, and to Ram, Amminadab, 20 and to Amminadab was born Nahshon, and to Nahshon, Salmon, 21 and to Salmon was born Boaz, and to Boaz, Obed, 22 and to Obed was born Jesse, and to Jesse, David.

Jesus’ Warning

16 (A)These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from (B)stumbling. [a]They will (C)make you outcasts from the synagogue, but (D)an hour is coming for everyone (E)who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. These things they will do (F)because they have not known the Father or Me. But these things I have spoken to you, (G)so that when their hour comes, you [b]may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you (H)at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Holy Spirit Promised

“But now (I)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘(J)Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (K)sorrow has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the [c](L)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (M)I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, (N)because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning (O)righteousness, because (P)I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 (Q)and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, (R)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (S)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will (T)glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 (U)All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

Jesus’ Death and Resurrection Foretold

16 (V)A little while, and (W)you will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and (X)you will see Me.” 17 Some of His disciples then said to one another, “What is this thing He is telling us, (Y)A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because (Z)I go to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 (AA)Jesus knew that they wished to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, that (AB)you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but (AC)your grief will be turned into joy. 21 (AD)Whenever a woman is in labor she has [d]pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a [e]child has been born into the world. 22 Therefore (AE)you too have grief now; but (AF)I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

Prayer Promises

23 (AG)In that day (AH)you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, (AI)if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 (AJ)Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your (AK)joy may be made full.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in [f](AL)figurative language; (AM)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in [g]figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father. 26 (AN)In that day (AO)you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for (AP)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and (AQ)have believed that (AR)I came forth from the Father. 28 (AS)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and (AT)going to the Father.”

29 His disciples *said, “Lo, now You are speaking plainly and are not [h]using (AU)a figure of speech. 30 Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we (AV)believe that You (AW)came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (AX)an hour is coming, and has already come, for (AY)you to be scattered, each to (AZ)his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet (BA)I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, so that (BB)in Me you may have peace. (BC)In the world you have tribulation, but (BD)take courage; (BE)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 Jesus spoke these things; and (BF)lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; (BG)glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as (BH)You gave Him authority over all flesh, that (BI)to [i]all whom You have given Him, (BJ)He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, (BK)the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom (BL)You have sent. (BM)I glorified You on the earth, [j](BN)having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, (BO)glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had (BP)with You before the world was.

(BQ)I have manifested Your name to the men whom (BR)You gave Me out of the world; they were (BS)Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have (BT)kept Your word. Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for (BU)the words which You gave Me (BV)I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that (BW)I came forth from You, and they believed that (BX)You sent Me. (BY)I ask on their behalf; (BZ)I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom (CA)You have given Me; for (CB)they are Yours; 10 and (CC)all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world; and yet (CD)they themselves are in the world, and (CE)I come to You. (CF)Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name (CG)which You have given Me, that (CH)they may be one even as We are. 12 While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name (CI)which You have given Me; and I guarded them and (CJ)not one of them perished but (CK)the [k]son of perdition, so that the (CL)Scripture would be fulfilled.

The Disciples in the World

13 But now (CM)I come to You; and (CN)these things I speak in the world so that they may have My (CO)joy made full in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; and (CP)the world has hated them, because (CQ)they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them [l]from [m](CR)the evil one. 16 (CS)They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 (CT)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As (CU)You sent Me into the world, (CV)I also have sent them into the world. 19 For their sakes I (CW)sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be (CX)sanctified (CY)in truth.

20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; (CZ)even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, (DA)so that the world may [n]believe that (DB)You sent Me.

Their Future Glory

22 The (DC)glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 (DD)I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected [o]in unity, so that the world may [p]know that (DE)You sent Me, and (DF)loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that (DG)they also, whom You have given Me, (DH)be with Me where I am, so that they may see My (DI)glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before (DJ)the foundation of the world.

25 “O (DK)righteous Father, [q]although (DL)the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that (DM)You sent Me; 26 and (DN)I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that (DO)the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Security of Those Who Trust in the Lord, and Insecurity of the Wicked.

A Psalm of David.

37 (A)Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not (B)envious toward wrongdoers.
For they will (C)wither quickly like the grass
And (D)fade like the green herb.
(E)Trust in the Lord and do good;
(F)Dwell in the land and [a](G)cultivate faithfulness.
(H)Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will (I)give you the desires of your heart.
(J)Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth (K)your righteousness as the light
And your judgment (L)as the noonday.

[b]Rest in the Lord and (M)wait [c]patiently for Him;
(N)Do not fret because of him who (O)prospers in his way,
Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
Cease from anger and (P)forsake wrath;
Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.
For (Q)evildoers will be cut off,
But those who wait for the Lord, they will (R)inherit the land.
10 Yet (S)a little while and the wicked man will be no more;
And you will look carefully for (T)his place and he will not be there.
11 But (U)the humble will inherit the land
And will delight themselves in (V)abundant prosperity.
