Boas tar Rut till hustru
4 Boas gick upp till stadsporten och satte sig där. Då kom återlösaren förbi, han som Boas hade talat om. Boas sade: ”Kom och sätt dig här, min vän.” Och han kom och satte sig. 2 Därefter hämtade Boas dit tio män av de äldste i staden och sade: ”Sätt er här.” Och de satte sig. 3 Sedan sade han till återlösaren: ”Den åkermark som tillhörde vår broder Elimelek säljer nu Noomi, hon som kom tillbaka från Moabs land. 4 (A) Därför tänkte jag meddela dig detta och säga: Köp marken inför dem som sitter här och inför mitt folks äldste. Vill du lösa in den, så gör det. Men om du inte vill lösa in den, så säg mig det så att jag vet. För ingen annan än du har den rätten, men jag har den näst efter dig.” Han sade: ”Jag löser in den.”
5 Boas sade: ”När du köper marken av Noomi och av moabitiskan Rut, då får du den också av den dödes hustru[a] för att uppväcka den dödes namn över hans arvslott.” 6 Återlösaren svarade: ”Då kan jag inte lösa in den, för då skulle jag skada min egen arvslott. Lös du in det jag skulle ha löst in, för jag kan inte göra det.”
7 Vid inlösen och ägarbyte var det förr i tiden sed i Israel att den ena parten, för att stadfästa avtalet, tog av sig sin sko[b] och gav den åt den andre. Detta gällde som bekräftelse i Israel. 8 Återlösaren sade till Boas: ”Köp det du!” Och han tog av sig skon.
9 Då sade Boas till de äldste och till allt folket: ”Ni är i dag vittnen till att jag av Noomi har köpt allt det som tillhört Elimelek och allt det som tillhört Kiljon och Mahlon. 10 Samtidigt har jag också fått moabitiskan Rut, Mahlons hustru, till min hustru, för att uppväcka den dödes namn över hans arvslott så att den dödes namn inte utplånas bland hans bröder eller ur porten till hans stad. Ni är i dag vittnen till detta.” 11 (B) Allt folket i stadsporten liksom de äldste svarade: ”Vi är vittnen. Må Herren låta den kvinna som nu kommer till ditt hem bli som Rakel och Lea[c], som båda har byggt upp Israels hus. Bli framgångsrik i Efrata och berömd i Betlehem. 12 (C) Må ditt hus bli som Peres hus, honom som Tamar födde åt Juda, genom de barn som Herren ska ge dig med denna unga kvinna.”[d]
Rut blir stammoder till David
13 (D) Boas tog Rut till sig och hon blev hans hustru. När han gick in till henne lät Herren henne bli havande, och hon födde en son. 14 Då sade kvinnorna till Noomi: ”Lovad är Herren, som i dag inte har lämnat dig utan återlösare. Må hans namn bli prisat i Israel! 15 (E) Han ska ge dig nytt liv[e] och försörja dig på din ålderdom. Det är ju din sonhustru som har fött honom, hon som älskar dig och är mer för dig än sju söner.” 16 Och Noomi tog barnet och lade det i sin famn och blev den som skötte det.
17 Grannkvinnorna gav honom ett namn och sade: ”Noomi har fått en son!”. De kallade honom Obed[f], och han blev far till Ishai, Davids far.

- 4:5 då får du den också av den dödes hustru Annan översättning (enligt de syriska och latinska översättningarna): ”då får du också den dödes hustru”. Enligt en tillämpning av 5 Mos 25:5f var återlösaren skyldig att garantera änkans försörjning genom att gifta sig med henne (jfr vers 10). Den döde mannens namn skulle ”uppväckas” genom att ges till änkans nästa son i det nya äktenskapet, som också skulle ärva marken.
- 4:7 tog av sig sin sko Som hade stått på den tidigare ägda marken. En liknande symbolhandling för ägarbyte finns belagd i de mesopotamiska Nuzitexterna från tiden strax före Rut.

Boaz Redeems Ruth
4 Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there; and behold, (A)the close relative of whom Boaz had spoken came by. So Boaz said, “Come aside, [a]friend, sit down here.” So he came aside and sat down. 2 And he took ten men of (B)the elders of the city, and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3 Then he said to the close relative, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, sold the piece of land (C)which belonged to our brother Elimelech. 4 And I thought to [b]inform you, saying, (D)‘Buy it back (E)in the presence of the inhabitants and the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if [c]you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know; (F)for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am next after you.’ ”
And he said, “I will redeem it.”
5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, (G)to [d]perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance.”
6 (H)And the close relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
7 (I)Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm anything: one man took off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was a confirmation in Israel.
8 Therefore the close relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” So he took off his sandal. 9 And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi. 10 Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, (J)that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from [e]his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day.”
11 And all the people who were at the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. (K)The Lord make the woman who is coming to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who (L)built the house of Israel; and may you prosper in (M)Ephrathah and be famous in (N)Bethlehem. 12 May your house be like the house of (O)Perez, (P)whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of (Q)the offspring which the Lord will give you from this young woman.”

13 So Boaz (S)took Ruth and she became his wife; and when he went in to her, (T)the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14 Then (U)the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a [f]close relative; and may his name be famous in Israel! 15 And may he be to you a restorer of life and a [g]nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is (V)better to you than seven sons, has borne him.” 16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him. 17 (W)Also the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “There is a son born to Naomi.” And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18 (X)Now this is the genealogy of Perez: (Y)Perez begot Hezron; 19 Hezron begot Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab; 20 Amminadab begot (Z)Nahshon, and Nahshon begot (AA)Salmon;[h] 21 Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Obed; 22 Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot (AB)David.

Boaz Redeems Ruth
4 Now Boaz had gone up to (A)the gate and sat down there. And behold, (B)the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. 2 And he took ten men (C)of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3 Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 4 So I thought I would tell you of it and say, (D)‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you[a] will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth[b] the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order (E)to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.” 6 (F)Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
7 (G)Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. 8 So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to (H)Chilion and to Mahlon. 10 Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, (I)to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” 11 Then all the people who were (J)at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, (K)who together (L)built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in (M)Ephrathah and (N)be renowned in Bethlehem, 12 and may your house be like the house of Perez, (O)whom Tamar bore to Judah, because (P)of the offspring that the Lord will give you by this young woman.”
Ruth and Boaz Marry
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, (Q)and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14 (R)Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without (S)a redeemer, and may his name (T)be renowned in Israel! 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, (U)who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” 16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. 17 (V)And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
