Romans 9:8-17
New American Standard Bible
8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh [a]who are (A)children of God, but the (B)children of the promise are regarded as [b](C)descendants. 9 For this is the word of promise: “(D)At this time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.” 10 (E)And not only that, but there was also (F)Rebekah, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that (G)God’s purpose according to His choice would [c]stand, not [d]because of works but [e]because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “(H)The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written: “(I)Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”
14 (J)What shall we say then? (K)There is no injustice with God, is there? [f](L)Far from it! 15 For He says to Moses, “(M)I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will show compassion to whomever I show compassion.” 16 So then, it does not depend on the person who [g]wants it nor the one who [h](N)runs, but on (O)God who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “(P)For this very reason I raised you up, in order to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed [i]throughout the earth.”
