Released from the Law
7 Or do you not know, brothers[a]—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For (A)a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.[b] 3 Accordingly, (B)she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
4 Likewise, my brothers, (C)you also have died (D)to the law (E)through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, (F)in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work (G)in our members (H)to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the (I)new way of (J)the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.[c]
The Law and Sin
7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, (K)I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if (L)the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, (M)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. (N)For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment (O)that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, (P)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, (Q)deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So (R)the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, (S)sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For (T)I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with (U)the law, that it is good. 17 So now (V)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells (W)in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 (X)For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, (Y)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For (Z)I delight in the law of God, (AA)in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members (AB)another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from (AC)this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ
7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters(A)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(B) 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(C) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(D) through the body of Christ,(E) that you might belong to another,(F) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a](G) the sinful passions aroused by the law(H) were at work in us,(I) so that we bore fruit for death.(J) 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(K) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(L)
The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then?(M) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(N) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(O) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b](P) 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(Q) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(R) 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(S) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(T) deceived me,(U) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(V)
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(W) to bring about my death,(X) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(Y) sold(Z) as a slave to sin.(AA) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(AB) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(AC) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(AD) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c](AE) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(AF) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(AG)
21 So I find this law at work:(AH) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(AI) I delight in God’s law;(AJ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(AK) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(AL) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(AM) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(AN)
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(AO) but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.(AP)

7 Oare nu ştiţi, fraţilor, – căci eu le vorbesc unora care cunosc Legea –, că Legea domneşte peste un om atâta timp cât trăieşte el? 2 O femeie măritată este legată prin Lege de soţul ei, atâta timp cât acesta trăieşte, însă dacă soţul ei moare, ea este dezlegată de Lege în ce priveşte legătura cu soţul ei. 3 Deci, dacă ea trăieşte cu un alt bărbat câtă vreme soţul ei este în viaţă, se va numi adulterină, însă dacă soţul ei moare, ea este liberă faţă de Lege şi nu se va numi adulterină dacă se mărită cu un alt bărbat. 4 Tot astfel şi voi, fraţii mei, aţi murit faţă de Lege, prin trupul lui Cristos, ca să fiţi ai Altuia, ai Celui Ce a fost înviat din morţi, ca să aducem rod pentru Dumnezeu. 5 Căci, în timp ce trăiam potrivit firii[a], patimile păcatelor stârnite de Lege erau la lucru în mădularele noastre, aducând roade pentru moarte. 6 Dar acum am fost eliberaţi de Lege[b], murind faţă de ceea ce ne ţinea captivi, astfel încât să putem sluji în noutatea Duhului, şi nu după vechea literă[c].
Legea şi păcatul
7 Ce vom spune atunci? Este Legea păcat? În nici un caz! Totuşi eu n-aş fi cunoscut păcatul decât prin Lege, pentru că n-aş fi ştiut ce înseamnă să pofteşti, dacă Legea nu mi-ar fi spus: „Să nu pofteşti!“[d] 8 Dar păcatul, prinzând un prilej prin poruncă, a produs în mine tot felul de pofte, pentru că, fără Lege, păcatul este mort. 9 Odinioară, fără Lege, eram viu, însă, când a venit porunca, păcatul a prins viaţă, 10 iar eu am murit. Astfel, porunca, cea care era pentru viaţă, s-a dovedit a fi una care mi-a adus moartea. 11 Căci păcatul, prinzând prilejul prin poruncă, m-a înşelat şi, prin ea, m-a omorât. 12 Prin urmare, Legea, într-adevăr, este sfântă, iar porunca este sfântă, dreaptă şi bună.
13 Atunci ceea ce este bun mi-a adus moarte? În nici un caz, ci păcatul a lucrat moartea în mine prin ceea ce este bun, pentru ca el să poată fi arătat ca păcat şi, prin poruncă, să devină păcătos peste măsură. 14 Noi ştim că Legea este duhovnicească, însă eu sunt firesc[e], vândut ca sclav păcatului[f]. 15 Căci nu înţeleg ceea ce fac, întrucât nu fac ceea ce vreau, ci fac ceea ce urăsc! 16 Acum, dacă eu fac ceea ce nu vreau, sunt de acord că Legea este bună. 17 Prin urmare, nu mai sunt eu cel ce face lucrul acesta, ci păcatul care locuieşte în mine. 18 Eu ştiu că nimic bun nu locuieşte în mine, adică în firea mea, întrucât vreau să fac ceea ce este bine, dar nu pot! 19 Căci nu fac binele pe care-l vreau, ci răul pe care nu vreau să-l fac! 20 Dacă eu fac ceea ce nu vreau, atunci nu eu sunt cel care fac, ci păcatul care locuieşte în mine. 21 Astfel, eu găsesc această lege: când vreau să fac binele, răul este prezent. 22 Fiindcă, în omul lăuntric mă bucur de Legea lui Dumnezeu, 23 dar în mădularele mele văd o altă lege, care este împotriva legii din mintea mea, făcându-mă prizonier al legii păcatului, care este în mădularele mele. 24 Ce om nenorocit sunt! Cine mă va elibera din acest trup de moarte?! 25 Dar mulţumiri fie aduse lui Dumnezeu, prin Isus Cristos, Domnul nostru! Astfel, cu mintea mea sunt sclav al Legii lui Dumnezeu, dar cu firea mea sunt sclav al legii păcatului.
