An Example from Marriage
7 Brothers, all of you understand the law of Moses. So surely you know that the law rules over a person only while he is alive. 2 For example, a woman must stay married to her husband as long as he is alive. But if her husband dies, then she is free from the law of marriage. 3 But if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, the law says she is guilty of adultery. But if her husband dies, then the woman is free from the law of marriage. So if she marries another man after her husband dies, she is not guilty of adultery.
4 In the same way, my brothers, your old selves died, and you became free from the law through the body of Christ. Now you belong to someone else. You belong to the One who was raised from death. We belong to Christ so that we can be used in service to God. 5 In the past, we were ruled by our sinful selves. The law made us want to do sinful things. And those sinful things we wanted to do controlled our bodies, so that the things we did were only bringing us death. 6 In the past, the law held us like prisoners. But our old selves died, and we were made free from the law. So now we serve God in a new way, not in the old way with written rules. Now we serve God in the new way, with the Spirit.
Our Fight Against Sin
7 You might think that I am saying that sin and the law are the same thing. That is not true. But the law was the only way I could learn what sin meant. I would never have known what it means to want something wrong if the law had not said, “You must not want to take your neighbor’s things.”[a] 8 And sin found a way to use that command and cause me to want every kind of wrong thing. So sin came to me because of that command. But without the law, sin has no power. 9 I was alive without the law before I knew the law. But when the law’s command came to me, then sin began to live. 10 And I died because of sin. The command was meant to bring life, but for me that command brought death. 11 Sin found a way to fool me by using the command. Sin used the command to make me die.
12 So the law is holy, and the command is holy and right and good. 13 Does this mean that something that is good brought death to me? No! Sin used something that is good to bring death to me. This happened so that I could see what sin is really like. The command was used to show that sin is something very evil.
The War Within Man
14 We know that the law is spiritual. But I am not spiritual. Sin rules me as if I were its slave. 15 I do not understand the things I do. I do not do the good things I want to do. And I do the bad things I hate to do. 16 And if I do not want to do the bad things I do, then that means that I agree that the law is good. 17 But I am not really the one who is doing these bad things. It is sin living in me that does these things. 18 Yes, I know that nothing good lives in me—I mean nothing good lives in the part of me that is earthly and sinful. I want to do the things that are good. But I do not do them. 19 I do not do the good things that I want to do. I do the bad things that I do not want to do. 20 So if I do things I do not want to do, then I am not the one doing those things. It is sin living in me that does those bad things.
21 So I have learned this rule: When I want to do good, evil is there with me. 22 In my mind, I am happy with God’s law. 23 But I see another law working in my body. That law makes war against the law that my mind accepts. That other law working in my body is the law of sin, and that law makes me its prisoner. 24 What a miserable man I am! Who will save me from this body that brings me death? 25 God will. I thank him for saving me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So in my mind I am a slave to God’s law. But in my sinful self I am a slave to the law of sin.

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ
7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters(A)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(B) 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(C) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(D) through the body of Christ,(E) that you might belong to another,(F) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a](G) the sinful passions aroused by the law(H) were at work in us,(I) so that we bore fruit for death.(J) 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(K) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(L)
The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then?(M) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(N) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(O) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b](P) 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(Q) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(R) 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(S) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(T) deceived me,(U) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(V)
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(W) to bring about my death,(X) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(Y) sold(Z) as a slave to sin.(AA) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(AB) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(AC) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(AD) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c](AE) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(AF) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(AG)
21 So I find this law at work:(AH) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(AI) I delight in God’s law;(AJ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(AK) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(AL) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(AM) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(AN)
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(AO) but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.(AP)

7 弟兄們，我對懂得律法的人說，你們不曉得律法管轄人，是在他活著的期間嗎？ 2 一個已婚的婦人，在丈夫活著的時候，她是受律法約束歸屬丈夫；丈夫若死了，她就脫離丈夫在律法上的約束。 3 所以，當丈夫還活著的時候，如果她歸屬別的男人，就稱為淫婦；丈夫若死了，她就脫離了律法的約束，如果她歸屬別的男人，也不是淫婦。 4 這樣，我的弟兄們，你們藉著基督的身體，對律法來說也已經死了，使你們歸屬另一位，就是那從死人中復活的，為的是要我們結果子給 神。 5 我們從前屬肉體的時候，罪惡的情慾藉著律法在我們的肢體裡發動，就結出死亡的果子。 6 但現在，我們既然向那捆綁我們的律法死了，就脫離了律法的約束，好讓我們用心靈的新樣子，而不用儀文的舊方式來服事主。
善惡兩律在心中交戰
7 這樣，我們可以說甚麼呢？難道律法是罪嗎？絕對不是。不過，如果不是藉著律法，我就不知道甚麼是罪；如果不是律法說“不可貪心”，我就不知道甚麼是貪心。 8 但罪趁著機會，藉著誡命在我裡面發動各樣的貪心，因為沒有律法，罪是死的。 9 在沒有律法的時候，我是活的；但誡命一來，罪就活了，我就死了。 10 那本來使人活的誡命，反而使我死了； 11 因為罪藉著誡命把握著機會來欺騙我，並且殺了我。 12 這樣，律法是聖潔的，誡命也是聖潔、公義和良善的。
13 既是這樣，那良善的反而使我死嗎？絕對不是！但罪藉著那良善的使我死，就顯出真是罪，為了要使罪藉著誡命變成更加邪惡。 14 我們知道律法是屬靈的，我卻是屬肉體的，已經賣給罪了。 15 因為我所作的，我不明白；我所願意的，我沒有去作，我所恨惡的，我倒去作。 16 如果我所不願意的，我倒去作，我就不得不承認律法是好的。 17 既是這樣，那就不是我作的，而是住在我裡面的罪作的。 18 我知道在我裡面，就是在我肉體之中，沒有良善，因為立志行善由得我，行出來卻由不得我。 19 所以我願意行的善，我沒有去行；我不願意作的惡，我倒去作了。 20 我若作自己不願意作的事，那就不是我作的，而是住在我裡面的罪作的。 21 因此，我發現了一個律，就是我想向善的時候，惡就在我裡面出現。 22 按著我裡面的人來說，我是喜歡 神的律， 23 但我發覺肢體中另有一個律，和我心中的律爭戰，把我擄去附從肢體中的罪律。 24 我這個人真是苦啊！誰能救我脫離這使我死亡的身體呢？ 25 感謝 神，藉著我們的主耶穌基督就能脫離了。可見，一方面我自己心裡服事 神的律，另一方面我的肉體卻服事罪的律。

7 Agora, irmãos, vocês que conhecem a lei, não sabem que ela se aplica apenas enquanto a pessoa vive? 2 Por exemplo, quando uma mulher se casa, a lei a une a seu marido enquanto ele estiver vivo. No entanto, se ele morrer, as leis do casamento já não se aplicarão à mulher. 3 Portanto, enquanto o marido estiver vivo, se ela se casar com outro homem, cometerá adultério. Mas, se o marido morrer, ela ficará livre dessa lei e não cometerá adultério ao se casar novamente.
4 Assim, meus irmãos, vocês morreram para o poder da lei quando morreram com Cristo, e agora estão unidos com aquele que foi ressuscitado dos mortos. Como resultado, podemos produzir uma colheita de boas obras para Deus. 5 Quando éramos controlados pela natureza humana,[a] desejos pecaminosos atuavam dentro de nós, e a lei despertava esses desejos maus, que produziam uma colheita de obras pecaminosas cujo resultado era a morte. 6 Agora, porém, fomos libertos da lei, pois morremos para ela e já não estamos presos a seu poder. Podemos servir a Deus não da maneira antiga, obedecendo à letra da lei, mas da maneira nova, vivendo no Espírito.
A lei de Deus expõe nosso pecado
7 Por acaso estou dizendo que a lei de Deus é pecaminosa? Claro que não! Na verdade, foi a lei que me mostrou meu pecado. Eu jamais saberia que cobiçar é errado se a lei não dissesse: “Não cobice”.[b] 8 Mas o pecado usou esse mandamento para despertar dentro de mim todo tipo de desejo cobiçoso. Se não houvesse lei, o pecado não teria esse poder. 9 Houve um tempo em que eu vivia sem a lei. No entanto, quando tomei conhecimento do mandamento, o pecado ganhou vida, 10 e eu morri. Assim, descobri que os mandamentos da lei, que deveriam trazer vida, trouxeram, em vez disso, morte. 11 O pecado se aproveitou desses mandamentos e me enganou, e fez uso deles para me matar. 12 Isso, porém, só demonstra que a lei em si é santa, e santos, justos e bons são seus mandamentos.
13 Mas, então, a lei, que é boa, foi responsável por minha morte? Claro que não! O pecado usou o que era bom para me condenar à morte. Vemos, com isso, como o pecado é terrível, usando os bons mandamentos de Deus para seus próprios fins perversos.
A luta contra o pecado
14 O problema não está na lei, pois ela é espiritual e boa. O problema está em mim, pois sou humano,[c] escravo do pecado. 15 Não entendo a mim mesmo, pois quero fazer o que é certo, mas não o faço. Em vez disso, faço aquilo que odeio. 16 Mas, se eu sei que o que faço é errado, isso mostra que concordo que a lei é boa. 17 Portanto, não sou eu quem faz o que é errado, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
18 E eu sei que em mim, isto é, em minha natureza humana,[d] não há nada de bom, pois quero fazer o que é certo, mas não consigo. 19 Quero fazer o bem, mas não o faço. Não quero fazer o que é errado, mas, ainda assim, o faço. 20 Então, se faço o que não quero, na verdade não sou eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
21 Assim, descobri esta lei em minha vida: quando quero fazer o que é certo, percebo que o mal está presente em mim. 22 Amo a lei de Deus de todo o coração. 23 Contudo, há outra lei dentro de mim que está em guerra com minha mente e me torna escravo do pecado que permanece dentro de mim. 24 Como sou miserável! Quem me libertará deste corpo mortal dominado pelo pecado? 25 Graças a Deus, a resposta está em Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor. Na mente, quero, de fato, obedecer à lei de Deus, mas, por causa de minha natureza humana, sou escravo do pecado.
