An Illustration from Marriage

Since I am speaking to those who understand law, brothers,(A) are you unaware that the law has authority over someone as long as he lives? For example, a married woman is legally bound to her husband while he lives.(B) But if her husband dies, she is released from the law regarding the husband. So then, if she gives herself to another man while her husband is living, she will be called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law. Then, if she gives herself to another man, she is not an adulteress.

Therefore, my brothers, you also were put to death(C) in relation to the law(D) through the crucified body of the Messiah,(E) so that you may belong to another—to Him who was raised from the dead—that we may bear fruit for God. For when we were in the flesh,[a](F) the sinful passions operated through the law in every part of us[b](G) and bore fruit for death. But now we have been released from the law, since we have died to what held us, so that we may serve in the new way[c] of the Spirit(H) and not in the old letter of the law.

Sin’s Use of the Law

What should we say then?(I) Is the law sin? Absolutely not!(J) On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law.(K) For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.(L)[d] And sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment,(M) produced in me coveting of every kind. For apart from the law sin is dead.(N) Once I was alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life 10 and I died. The commandment that was meant for life(O) resulted in death for me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me,(P) and through it killed me. 12 So then, the law is holy,(Q) and the commandment is holy and just and good.

The Problem of Sin in Us

13 Therefore, did what is good cause my death?[e] Absolutely not!(R) On the contrary, sin, in order to be recognized as sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment, sin might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual,(S) but I am made out of flesh,[f] sold(T) into sin’s power.(U) 15 For I do not understand what I am doing,(V) because I do not practice what I want to do,(W) but I do what I hate. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 So now I am no longer the one doing it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh.(X) For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. 19 For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but it is the sin that lives in me. 21 So I discover this principle:[g](Y) When I want to do what is good, evil is with me. 22 For in my inner self[h] I joyfully agree with God’s law.(Z) 23 But I see a different law in the parts of my body,[i](AA) waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body.[j] 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this dying body?(AB) 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord![k](AC) So then, with my mind I myself am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh, to the law of sin.

Løst fra loven

Kære venner, jeg taler nu til jer, som kender de jødiske love. I ved godt, at man kun er undergivet loven, så længe man lever. En gift kvinde er ifølge loven bundet til sin mand, så længe han er i live. Men hvis han dør, bliver hun løst fra den lov, som bandt hende til ham, og hun er fri til at gifte sig med en anden mand. Hvis hun derimod flytter sammen med en anden mand, mens hendes egen mand stadig lever, så bryder hun ægteskabet. Sådan er det også med jer, kære venner. For det første blev I frigjort fra loven, da Kristus døde for jer. For det andet fik I frihed til at binde jer til en anden, og denne anden, som I nu tilhører, er den genopstandne Kristus selv. Det betyder, at I nu kan gøre, hvad Gud ønsker. Dengang vi levede uden Kristus, fik vores syndige tilbøjeligheder næring af lovens forbud og fik os til at gøre ting, som fører til død. Men nu er vi løst fra loven. Vi er frigjort fra det, som bandt os, så vi nu kan tjene Gud på en helt ny måde—ved at lytte til Guds Ånd—i stedet for den gamle måde, som var bundet til lovens bogstav.

Loven var god nok, men kunne ikke overvinde syndens magt

Betyder det så, at loven er af det onde? Nej, aldeles ikke. Havde loven ikke været der til at pege på synden, ville jeg ikke have forstået syndens væsen. Jeg ville ikke have vidst, hvor slemt det er at begære noget, som tilhører en anden, hvis ikke loven havde sagt, at det måtte jeg ikke. Synden brugte altså lovens forbud til at vække alle mulige former for begær i mig. Uden loven har synden ikke den samme magt. Før jeg kendte til loven, levede jeg udmærket. Men da jeg så hørte om lovens forbud, kom der liv i synden, 10 og mit liv blev helt elendigt. Lovens bud, som skulle have givet mig et godt liv, resulterede i det modsatte. 11 Synden udnyttede nemlig lovens forbud til at få mig på afveje, og på den måde blev mit liv elendigt. 12 Altså er loven god, og lovens bud sigter mod det, som er godt, retfærdigt og rigtigt.

13 Jamen, hvis loven er god, hvordan kunne den så føre til sådan en elendighed?—Det var egentlig ikke loven, der gjorde det. Det var synden. I og med at synden brugte det gode til at opnå det onde, blev det klart, hvor ond synden i virkeligheden er.

14 Jeg ved[a] jo godt, at loven er åndelig, men det er jeg[b] ikke, så længe jeg er slave under synden. 15 Så forstår jeg ikke, hvad det er, jeg gør. Jeg gør nemlig ikke det, jeg gerne vil, men derimod det, jeg ikke ønsker at gøre. 16 Når jeg altså gør det, jeg ikke ønsker at gøre, så er jeg enig i, at loven har ret. 17 Og det er egentlig ikke mig, der gør det, men synden, som bor i mig. 18 Jeg må erkende, at der ikke bor noget godt i mit syndige jeg, for selvom jeg har viljen til at gøre det rigtige, har jeg ikke magten til det. 19 Jeg gør nemlig ikke det gode, som jeg ønsker at gøre. Tværtimod gør jeg det onde, som jeg ikke ønsker at gøre. 20 Så når jeg gør det, jeg ikke ønsker, så er det egentlig ikke mig selv, der gør det, men synden, som bor i mig. 21 Så længe jeg lever under syndens herredømme, gælder den grundlov, at når jeg ønsker at gøre det gode, kommer det onde til udtryk. 22 Selvom jeg i mit inderste glæder mig over Guds lov, 23 så finder jeg, at der er en anden lov, der styrer mine handlinger og ødelægger mine gode forsætter. Jeg er taget til fange af synden, som regerer i mit liv. 24 Hvor er det frygteligt! Hvem kan redde mig ud af dette elendige liv, som fører til død?

25 Det, jeg her har beskrevet, er, hvad der sker, når man prøver at tjene Guds lov med sit sind, alt imens man stadig er slave under synden. Men Gud ske lov, at Jesus Kristus, vores Herre, redder mennesker ud af den elendighed.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
