The Law and Sin

⁷What shall we say, then?^(A) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!^(B) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.^(C) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”^[a]^(D) ⁸But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,^(E) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.^(F) ⁹Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. ¹⁰I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life^(G) actually brought death. ¹¹For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,^(H) deceived me,^(I) and through the commandment put me to death. ¹²So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.^(J)

¹³Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good^(K) to bring about my death,^(L) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

¹⁴We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,^(M) sold^(N) as a slave to sin.^(O) ¹⁵I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.^(P) ¹⁶And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.^(Q) ¹⁷As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.^(R) ¹⁸For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.^[b]^(S) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. ¹⁹For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.^(T) ²⁰Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.^(U)

²¹So I find this law at work:^(V) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. ²²For in my inner being^(W) I delight in God’s law;^(X) ²³but I see another law at work in me, waging war^(Y) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin^(Z) at work within me. ²⁴What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?^(AA) ²⁵Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!^(AB)

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,^(AC) but in my sinful nature^[c] a slave to the law of sin.^(AD)

Life Through the Spirit

8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation^(AE) for those who are in Christ Jesus,^(AF) ²because through Christ Jesus^(AG) the law of the Spirit who gives life^(AH) has set you^[d] free^(AI) from the law of sin^(AJ) and death. ³For what the law was powerless^(AK) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,^[e]^(AL) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh^(AM) to be a sin offering.^[f]^(AN) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, ⁴in order that the righteous requirement^(AO) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.^(AP)

⁵Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;^(AQ) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.^(AR) ⁶The mind governed by the flesh is death,^(AS) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life^(AT) and peace. ⁷The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;^(AU) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. ⁸Those who are in the realm of the flesh^(AV) cannot please God.

⁹You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh^(AW) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.^(AX) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,^(AY) they do not belong to Christ. ¹⁰But if Christ is in you,^(AZ) then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life^[g] because of righteousness. ¹¹And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead^(BA) is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies^(BB) because of^[h] his Spirit who lives in you.

¹²Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.^(BC) ¹³For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;^(BD) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,^(BE) you will live.^(BF)

¹⁴For those who are led by the Spirit of God^(BG) are the children of God.^(BH) ¹⁵The Spirit^(BI) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;^(BJ) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.^[i] And by him we cry, “Abba,^[j] Father.”^(BK) ¹⁶The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit^(BL) that we are God’s children.^(BM) ¹⁷Now if we are children, then we are heirs^(BN)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings^(BO) in order that we may also share in his glory.^(BP)

Present Suffering and Future Glory

¹⁸I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.^(BQ) ¹⁹For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God^(BR) to be revealed. ²⁰For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,^(BS) in hope ²¹that^[k] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay^(BT) and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.^(BU)

²²We know that the whole creation has been groaning^(BV) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. ²³Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,^(BW) groan^(BX) inwardly as we wait eagerly^(BY) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.^(BZ) ²⁴For in this hope we were saved.^(CA) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.^(CB) Who hopes for what they already have? ²⁵But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.^(CC)

²⁶In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit^(CD) himself intercedes for us^(CE) through wordless groans. ²⁷And he who searches our hearts^(CF) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes^(CG) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

²⁸And we know that in all things God works for the good^(CH) of those who love him, who^[l] have been called^(CI) according to his purpose.^(CJ) ²⁹For those God foreknew^(CK) he also predestined^(CL) to be conformed to the image of his Son,^(CM) that he might be the firstborn^(CN) among many brothers and sisters. ³⁰And those he predestined,^(CO) he also called;^(CP) those he called, he also justified;^(CQ) those he justified, he also glorified.^(CR)

More Than Conquerors

³¹What, then, shall we say in response to these things?^(CS) If God is for us,^(CT) who can be against us?^(CU) ³²He who did not spare his own Son,^(CV) but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? ³³Who will bring any charge^(CW) against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. ³⁴Who then is the one who condemns?^(CX) No one. Christ Jesus who died^(CY)—more than that, who was raised to life^(CZ)—is at the right hand of God^(DA) and is also interceding for us.^(DB) ³⁵Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?^(DC) Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?^(DD) ³⁶As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”^[m]^(DE)

³⁷No, in all these things we are more than conquerors^(DF) through him who loved us.^(DG) ³⁸For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,^[n] neither the present nor the future,^(DH) nor any powers,^(DI) ³⁹neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God^(DJ) that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.^(DK)

Psalm 107

¹Give thanks to the Lord,^(A) for he is good;^(B)
his love endures forever.

²Let the redeemed^(C) of the Lord tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
³those he gathered^(D) from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.^[a]

⁴Some wandered in desert^(E) wastelands,
    finding no way to a city^(F) where they could settle.
⁵They were hungry^(G) and thirsty,^(H)
    and their lives ebbed away.
⁶Then they cried out^(I) to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
⁷He led them by a straight way^(J)
    to a city^(K) where they could settle.
⁸Let them give thanks^(L) to the Lord for his unfailing love^(M)
    and his wonderful deeds^(N) for mankind,
⁹for he satisfies^(O) the thirsty
    and fills the hungry with good things.^(P)

¹⁰Some sat in darkness,^(Q) in utter darkness,
    prisoners suffering^(R) in iron chains,^(S)
¹¹because they rebelled^(T) against God’s commands
    and despised^(U) the plans^(V) of the Most High.
¹²So he subjected them to bitter labor;
    they stumbled, and there was no one to help.^(W)
¹³Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them^(X) from their distress.
¹⁴He brought them out of darkness,^(Y) the utter darkness,^(Z)
    and broke away their chains.^(AA)
¹⁵Let them give thanks^(AB) to the Lord for his unfailing love^(AC)
    and his wonderful deeds^(AD) for mankind,
¹⁶for he breaks down gates of bronze
    and cuts through bars of iron.

    and suffered affliction^(AG) because of their iniquities.
¹⁸They loathed all food^(AH)
    and drew near the gates of death.^(AI)
¹⁹Then they cried^(AJ) to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them^(AK) from their distress.
²⁰He sent out his word^(AL) and healed them;^(AM)
    he rescued^(AN) them from the grave.^(AO)
²¹Let them give thanks^(AP) to the Lord for his unfailing love^(AQ)
    and his wonderful deeds^(AR) for mankind.
²²Let them sacrifice thank offerings^(AS)
    and tell of his works^(AT) with songs of joy.^(AU)

²³Some went out on the sea^(AV) in ships;^(AW)
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
²⁴They saw the works of the Lord,^(AX)
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
²⁵For he spoke^(AY) and stirred up a tempest^(AZ)
    that lifted high the waves.^(BA)
²⁶They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril^(BB) their courage melted^(BC) away.
²⁷They reeled^(BD) and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
²⁸Then they cried^(BE) out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.^(BF)
²⁹He stilled the storm^(BG) to a whisper;
    the waves^(BH) of the sea^[b] were hushed.^(BI)
³⁰They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them^(BJ) to their desired haven.
³¹Let them give thanks^(BK) to the Lord for his unfailing love^(BL)
    and his wonderful deeds^(BM) for mankind.
³²Let them exalt^(BN) him in the assembly^(BO) of the people
    and praise him in the council of the elders.

³³He turned rivers into a desert,^(BP)
    flowing springs^(BQ) into thirsty ground,
³⁴and fruitful land into a salt waste,^(BR)
    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
³⁵He turned the desert into pools of water^(BS)
    and the parched ground into flowing springs;^(BT)
³⁶there he brought the hungry to live,
    and they founded a city where they could settle.
³⁷They sowed fields and planted vineyards^(BU)
    that yielded a fruitful harvest;
³⁸he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,^(BV)
    and he did not let their herds diminish.^(BW)

³⁹Then their numbers decreased,^(BX) and they were humbled^(BY)
    by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
⁴⁰he who pours contempt on nobles^(BZ)
    made them wander in a trackless waste.^(CA)
⁴¹But he lifted the needy^(CB) out of their affliction
    and increased their families like flocks.^(CC)
⁴²The upright see and rejoice,^(CD)
    but all the wicked shut their mouths.^(CE)
