14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(A) sold(B) as a slave to sin.(C) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(D) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(E) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(F) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[a](G) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(H) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(I)

21 So I find this law at work:(J) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(K) I delight in God’s law;(L) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(M) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(N) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(O) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(P)

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(Q) but in my sinful nature[b] a slave to the law of sin.(R)

Life Through the Spirit

Therefore, there is now no condemnation(S) for those who are in Christ Jesus,(T) because through Christ Jesus(U) the law of the Spirit who gives life(V) has set you[c] free(W) from the law of sin(X) and death. For what the law was powerless(Y) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[d](Z) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh(AA) to be a sin offering.[e](AB) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement(AC) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.(AD)

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;(AE) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.(AF) The mind governed by the flesh is death,(AG) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life(AH) and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;(AI) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh(AJ) cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh(AK) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(AL) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(AM) they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you,(AN) then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[f] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead(AO) is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies(AP) because of[g] his Spirit who lives in you.

The Conflict of Serving Two Masters

14 For we know that the Law is (A)spiritual, but I am (B)fleshly, (C)sold [a](D)into bondage to sin. 15 For (E)I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing (F)what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 However, if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with (G)the Law, that the Law is good. 17 But now, (H)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my (I)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For (J)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I do the very thing I do not want, (K)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then (L)the [b]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully agree with the law of God [c]in (M)the inner person, 23 but I see (N)a different law in [d]the parts of my body waging war against the (O)law of my mind, and making me a prisoner [e]of (P)the law of sin, the law which is in [f]my body’s parts. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [g](Q)the body of this (R)death? 25 (S)Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh (T)the law of sin.

Deliverance from Bondage

Therefore there is now no (U)condemnation at all for those who are (V)in (W)Christ Jesus. For (X)the law of the Spirit of life [h]in (Y)Christ Jesus (Z)has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For (AA)what the Law could not do, [i](AB)weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in (AC)the likeness of [j]sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the (AD)requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who (AE)do not walk [k]according to the flesh but [l]according to the Spirit. For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on (AF)the things of the flesh, but those who are in accord with the Spirit, (AG)the things of the Spirit. (AH)For the mind [m]set on the flesh is (AI)death, but the mind [n]set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind [o]set on the flesh is (AJ)hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are (AK)in the flesh cannot please God.

However, you are not (AL)in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God (AM)dwells in you. But (AN)if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 (AO)If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is [p]alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who (AP)raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (AQ)He who raised (AR)Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [q]through His Spirit who dwells in you.

The Conflict of Two Natures

14 We know that the Law is spiritual, but I am a creature of the flesh [worldly, self-reliant—carnal and unspiritual], sold into slavery to sin [and serving under its control]. 15 For I do not understand my own actions [I am baffled and bewildered by them]. I do not practice what I want to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate [and yielding to my human nature, my worldliness—my sinful capacity]. 16 Now if I habitually do what I do not want to do, [that means] I agree with the Law, confessing that it is good (morally excellent). 17 So now [if that is the case, then] it is no longer I who do it [the disobedient thing which I despise], but the sin [nature] which lives in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness—my sinful capacity]. For the willingness [to do good] is present in me, but the doing of good is not. 19 For the good that I want to do, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want to do, I am no longer the one doing it [that is, it is not me that acts], but the sin [nature] which lives in me.

21 So I find it to be the law [of my inner self], that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully delight in the law of God in my inner self [with my new nature],(A) 23 but I see a different law and rule of action in the members of my body [in its appetites and desires], waging war against the law of my mind and subduing me and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is within my members. 24 Wretched and miserable man that I am! Who will [rescue me and] set me free from this body of death [this corrupt, mortal existence]? 25 Thanks be to God [for my deliverance] through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind serve the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness, my sinful capacity—I serve] the law of sin.

Escape from Bondage

Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].(B) For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do [that is, overcome sin and remove its penalty, its power] being weakened by the flesh [man’s nature without the Holy Spirit], God did: He sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful man as an offering for sin. And He condemned sin in the flesh [subdued it and overcame it in the person of His own Son],(C) so that the [righteous and just] requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not live our lives in the ways of the flesh [guided by worldliness and our sinful nature], but [live our lives] in the ways of the Spirit [guided by His power]. For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose]. Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever—because it pursues sin]; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God—both now and forever]; the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God.

However, you are not [living] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you]. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him [and is not a child of God].(D) 10 If Christ lives in you, though your [natural] body is dead because of sin, your spirit is alive because of righteousness [which He provides]. 11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

14 We know that the Law is spiritual. But I am merely a human, and I have been sold as a slave to sin. 15 (A) In fact, I don't understand why I act the way I do. I don't do what I know is right. I do the things I hate. 16 Although I don't do what I know is right, I agree that the Law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.

18 I know that my selfish desires won't let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do right, I cannot. 19 Instead of doing what I know is right, I do wrong. 20 And so, if I don't do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.

21 The Law has shown me that something in me keeps me from doing what I know is right. 22 With my whole heart I agree with the Law of God. 23 But in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind, and it makes me a prisoner of sin that controls everything I do. 24 What a miserable person I am. Who will rescue me from this body that is doomed to die? 25 Thank God! Jesus Christ will rescue me.

So with my mind I serve the Law of God, although my selfish desires make me serve the law of sin.

Living by the Power of God's Spirit

If you belong to Christ Jesus, you won't be punished. The Holy Spirit will give you life that comes from Christ Jesus and will set you[a] free from sin and death. The Law of Moses cannot do this, because our selfish desires make the Law weak. But God set you free when he sent his own Son to be like us sinners and to be a sacrifice for our sin. God used Christ's body to condemn sin. He did this, so that we would do what the Law commands by obeying the Spirit instead of our own desires.

People who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves. Everyone who is ruled by the Holy Spirit thinks about spiritual things. If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace. Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God's laws. If we follow our desires, we cannot please God.

You are no longer ruled by your desires, but by God's Spirit, who lives in you. People who don't have the Spirit of Christ in them don't belong to him. 10 But Christ lives in you. So you are alive because God has accepted you, even though your bodies must die because of your sins. 11 (B) Yet God raised Jesus to life! God's Spirit now lives in you, and he will raise you to life by his Spirit.
