(A)And not only this, but [a]we also (B)celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about (C)perseverance; and (D)perseverance, (E)proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope (F)does not disappoint, because the love of God has been (G)poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

For while we were still (H)helpless, (I)at the right time (J)Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous person; [b]though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God (K)demonstrates (L)His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, (M)Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified [c](N)by His blood, we shall be saved (O)from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were (P)enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [d](Q)by His life. 11 (R)And not only this, but [e]we also celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (S)the reconciliation.

3-5 There’s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we’re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we’re never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary—we can’t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!

6-8 Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

9-11 Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way. If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life! Now that we have actually received this amazing friendship with God, we are no longer content to simply say it in plodding prose. We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah!

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
