God’s Promise Realized through Faith
13 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.
16 For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”)—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18 Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already[a] as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20 No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22 Therefore his faith[b] “was reckoned to him as righteousness.” 23 Now the words, “it was reckoned to him,” were written not for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

13 (A)Infatti la promessa di essere erede del mondo non fu fatta ad Abraamo o alla sua discendenza in base alla legge, ma in base alla giustizia che viene dalla fede. 14 Perché, se diventano eredi quelli che si fondano sulla legge, la fede è resa vana e la promessa è annullata, 15 poiché la legge produce ira; ma dove non c’è legge[a], non c’è neppure trasgressione. 16 Perciò l’eredità è per fede, affinché sia per grazia, in modo che la promessa sia sicura per tutta la discendenza: non soltanto per quella che è sotto la legge, ma anche per quella che discende dalla fede di Abraamo. Egli è padre di noi tutti 17 (com’è scritto: «Io ti ho costituito padre di molte nazioni»[b]) davanti a colui nel quale credette, Dio, che fa rivivere i morti e chiama all’esistenza le cose che non sono. 18 Egli, sperando contro speranza, credette, per diventare padre di molte nazioni, secondo quello che gli era stato detto: «Così sarà la tua discendenza»[c]. 19 Senza venir meno nella fede, egli vide[d] che il suo corpo era svigorito[e] (aveva quasi cent’anni) e che Sara non era più in grado di essere madre[f]; 20 però, davanti alla promessa di Dio non vacillò per incredulità, ma fu fortificato nella fede e diede gloria a Dio, 21 pienamente convinto che quanto egli ha promesso, è anche in grado di compierlo. 22 Perciò gli fu messo in conto come giustizia.
23 Or non per lui soltanto sta scritto che questo gli fu messo in conto come giustizia, 24 ma anche per noi, ai quali sarà pure messo in conto; per noi che crediamo in colui che ha risuscitato dai morti Gesù, nostro Signore, 25 il quale è stato dato a causa delle nostre offese ed è stato risuscitato per la nostra giustificazione.

13 Denn nicht durch das Gesetz erhielt Abraham und sein Same die Verheißung, dass er Erbe der Welt sein solle, sondern durch die Gerechtigkeit des Glaubens.
14 Denn wenn die vom Gesetz Erben sind, so ist der Glaube wertlos geworden und die Verheißung unwirksam gemacht.
15 Das Gesetz bewirkt nämlich Zorn; denn wo kein Gesetz ist, da ist auch keine Übertretung.
16 Darum ist es aus Glauben, damit es aufgrund von Gnade sei, auf dass die Verheißung dem ganzen Samen[a] sicher sei, nicht nur demjenigen aus dem Gesetz, sondern auch dem aus dem Glauben Abrahams, der unser aller Vater ist
17 (wie geschrieben steht: »Ich habe dich zum Vater vieler Völker gemacht«[b]), vor Gott, dem er glaubte, der die Toten lebendig macht und dem ruft, was nicht ist, als wäre es da.
18 Er hat da, wo nichts zu hoffen war, auf Hoffnung hin geglaubt, dass er ein Vater vieler Völker werde, gemäß der Zusage: »So soll dein Same sein!«[c]
19 Und er wurde nicht schwach im Glauben und zog nicht seinen Leib in Betracht, der schon erstorben war, weil er fast hundertjährig war; auch nicht den erstorbenen Mutterleib der Sara.
20 Er zweifelte nicht an der Verheißung Gottes durch Unglauben, sondern wurde stark durch den Glauben, indem er Gott die Ehre gab
21 und völlig überzeugt war, dass Er das, was Er verheißen hat, auch zu tun vermag.
22 Darum wurde es ihm auch als Gerechtigkeit angerechnet.
23 Es steht aber nicht allein um seinetwillen geschrieben, dass es ihm angerechnet worden ist,
24 sondern auch um unsertwillen, denen es angerechnet werden soll, wenn wir an den glauben, der unseren Herrn Jesus aus den Toten auferweckt hat,
25 ihn, der um unserer Übertretungen willen dahingegeben und um unserer Rechtfertigung willen auferweckt worden ist.

13 Ábrahám és utódai azt az ígéretet kapták, hogy az egész világot örökölni fogják. De ezt nem a Törvény alapján ígérték Ábrahámnak, hanem azért, mert a hite alapján Isten elfogadta őt. 14 Ha ugyanis azok lennének az örökösök, akik a Törvény alatt élnek, akkor a hitnek nincs semmi értelme, és az előbbi ígéret semmit sem ér. 15 Mert a Törvény Isten haragját kelti fel azok ellen, akik nem engedelmeskednek neki. Ahol viszont nincs semmiféle törvény, ott nem is lehet ellene vétkezni.
16 Amit Isten megígért, azt csak hit által kaphatjuk meg. Ez azért van így, hogy ajándékba kapjuk, kegyelemből. Így tehát az ígéret Ábrahám minden utódja számára biztosítva van. Nemcsak azoknak, akik a Törvény alatt élnek, hanem azoknak is, akiknek ugyanolyan hitük van, mint Ábrahámnak. Ő tehát mindannyiunk ősapja. 17 Ahogyan az Írás is mondja: „Sok nép ősapjává tettelek téged.”[a] Ezt az ígéretet Ábrahám azért kapta, mert hitt Istenben, aki életre kelti a holtakat, és megteremti azokat, akik most még nem léteznek.
18 Nem volt már semmi reménye arra, hogy gyermeke szülessen, Ábrahám mégis hitt Istenben, és kitartott ebben a hitében. Ezért lett sok népnek ősapjává, ahogy ezt Isten megígérte neki: „Sok-sok utódod lesz.”[b]
19 Ábrahám akkor már majdnem százéves volt, ezért a testét tekintve már nagyon megöregedett. Hasonlóképpen Sára is meddő és nagyon idős volt. Ábrahám azonban nem ezekre tekintett, és a hite sem ingadozott. 20 Ellenkezőleg, Isten ígéretét tartotta a szeme előtt. Nem kételkedett abban, hogy amit Isten megígért neki, azt meg is fogja tenni. 13 Car la promesse de recevoir le monde en héritage a été faite à Abraham ou à sa descendance non parce qu’il avait obéi à la Loi, mais parce que Dieu l’a déclaré juste à cause de sa foi. 14 En effet, s’il faut être sous le régime de la Loi[a] pour avoir droit à cet héritage, alors la foi n’a plus de sens et la promesse est annulée. 15 Car la Loi produit la colère de Dieu. Or, là où il n’y a pas de Loi, il n’y a pas non plus de transgression. 16 Voilà pourquoi l’héritage se reçoit par la foi : c’est pour qu’il soit un don de la grâce. Ainsi, la promesse se trouve confirmée à toute la descendance d’Abraham, c’est-à-dire non seulement à celle qui a la Loi, mais aussi à celle qui partage la foi d’Abraham. Il est notre père à tous, 17 comme le dit l’Ecriture : Je t’ai établi pour être le père d’une multitude de peuples[b]. Placé en présence de Dieu[c], il mit sa confiance en celui qui donne la vie aux morts et appelle à l’existence ce qui n’existe pas.
18 Alors que tout portait au contraire, il a eu confiance, plein d’espérance. Ainsi il est devenu le père d’une multitude de peuples[d] conformément à ce que Dieu lui avait dit : Tes descendants seront nombreux[e].
19 Bien qu’il considéra son corps, qui était comme mort – il avait presque cent ans – et celui de Sara, qui ne pouvait plus donner la vie, sa foi ne faiblit pas. 20 Au contraire : loin de mettre en doute la promesse et de refuser de croire, il trouva sa force dans la foi, en reconnaissant la grandeur de Dieu[f] 21 et en étant absolument persuadé que Dieu est capable d’accomplir ce qu’il a promis.
22 C’est pourquoi, Dieu l’a déclaré juste en portant sa foi à son crédit[g]. 23 Or si cette parole : Dieu a porté sa foi à son crédit a été consignée dans l’Ecriture, ce n’est pas seulement pour Abraham[h]. 24 Elle nous concerne nous aussi. Car la foi sera aussi portée à notre crédit, à nous qui plaçons notre confiance en celui qui a ressuscité Jésus notre Seigneur ; 25 il a été livré pour nos fautes, et il est ressuscité pour que nous soyons déclarés justes[i].
