Because of the privilege and authority[a] God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.[b] Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

  1. 12:3a Or Because of the grace; compare 1:5.
  2. 12:3b Or by the faith God has given you; or by the standard of our God-given faith.

For through (A)the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (B)not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to (C)each a measure of faith. For (D)just as we have many parts in one body and all [a]the body’s parts do not have the same function, so we, (E)who are many, are (F)one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another. However, since we have gifts that (G)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if (H)prophecy, [b]in proportion to one’s faith; if [c](I)service, in the act of serving; or the one who (J)teaches, in the act of teaching; or the one who [d](K)exhorts, in the work of [e]exhortation; the one who gives, with [f](L)generosity; (M)the one who [g]is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with (N)cheerfulness.
