Israel Is Not Cast Away

11 I say then, God has not (A)rejected His people, has He? (B)May it never be! For (C)I too am an Israelite, [a]a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God (D)has not rejected His people whom He (E)foreknew. (F)Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, (G)they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” But what [b]is the divine response to him? “(H)I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time (I)a remnant according to God’s [c]gracious choice. But (J)if it is by grace, it is no longer [d]on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.

What then? What (K)Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but [e]those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were (L)hardened; just as it is written,

(M)God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes to see not and ears to hear not,
Down to this very day.”

And David says,

(N)Let their table become a snare and a trap,
And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10 (O)Let their eyes be darkened to see not,
And bend their backs forever.”

11 (P)I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? (Q)May it never be! But by their transgression (R)salvation has come to the Gentiles, to (S)make them jealous. 12 Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their [f](T)fulfillment be! 13 But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as (U)I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14 if somehow I might (V)move to jealousy (W)my [g]fellow countrymen and (X)save some of them. 15 For if their rejection is the (Y)reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but (Z)life from the dead? 16 If the (AA)first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.

17 But if some of the (AB)branches were broken off, and (AC)you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the [h]rich root of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that (AD)it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. 19 (AE)You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you (AF)stand by your faith. (AG)Do not be conceited, but fear; 21 for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. 22 Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s (AH)kindness, (AI)if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also (AJ)will be cut off. 23 And they also, (AK)if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?

25 For (AL)I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this (AM)mystery—so that you will not be (AN)wise in your own estimation—that a partial (AO)hardening has happened to Israel until the (AP)fullness of the Gentiles has come in; 26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,

(AQ)The Deliverer will come from Zion,
He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.”
27 (AR)This is [i]My covenant with them,
(AS)When I take away their sins.”

28 [j]From the standpoint of the gospel they are (AT)enemies for your sake, but [k]from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for (AU)the sake of the fathers; 29 for the gifts and the (AV)calling of God (AW)are irrevocable. 30 For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. 32 For (AX)God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.

33 Oh, the depth of (AY)the riches [l]both of the (AZ)wisdom and knowledge of God! (BA)How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For (BB)who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? 35 Or (BC)who has first given to Him [m]that it might be paid back to him again? 36 For (BD)from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. (BE)To Him be the glory [n]forever. Amen.

Dedicated Service

12 Therefore (BF)I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to (BG)present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, [o]acceptable to God, which is your [p]spiritual service of worship. And do not (BH)be conformed to (BI)this [q]world, but be transformed by the (BJ)renewing of your mind, so that you may [r](BK)prove what the will of God is, that which is good and [s]acceptable and perfect.

For through (BL)the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (BM)not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to (BN)each a measure of faith. For (BO)just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, (BP)who are many, are (BQ)one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Since we have gifts that (BR)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if (BS)prophecy, [t]according to the proportion of his faith; if [u](BT)service, in his serving; or he who (BU)teaches, in his teaching; or he who (BV)exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with [v](BW)liberality; (BX)he who [w]leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with (BY)cheerfulness.

Let (BZ)love be without hypocrisy. (CA)Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be (CB)devoted to one another in brotherly love; [x]give preference to one another (CC)in honor; 11 not lagging behind in diligence, (CD)fervent in spirit, (CE)serving the Lord; 12 (CF)rejoicing in hope, (CG)persevering in tribulation, (CH)devoted to prayer, 13 (CI)contributing to the needs of the [y]saints, [z](CJ)practicing hospitality.

14 (CK)Bless those who persecute [aa]you; bless and do not curse. 15 (CL)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 (CM)Be of the same mind toward one another; (CN)do not be haughty in mind, but [ab]associate with the lowly. (CO)Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 (CP)Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. [ac](CQ)Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, (CR)so far as it depends on you, (CS)be at peace with all men. 19 (CT)Never take your own revenge, beloved, but [ad]leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “(CU)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 (CV)But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Be Subject to Government

13 Every [ae](CW)person is to be in (CX)subjection to the governing authorities. For (CY)there is no authority except [af]from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore [ag]whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For (CZ)rulers are not a cause of fear for [ah]good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an (DA)avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also (DB)for conscience’ sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. (DC)Render to all what is due them: (DD)tax to whom tax is due; (DE)custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for (DF)he who loves [ai]his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For this, “(DG)You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “(DH)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love [aj]does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore (DI)love is the fulfillment of the law.

11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is (DJ)already the hour for you to (DK)awaken from sleep; for now [ak]salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. 12 (DL)The night is almost gone, and (DM)the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside (DN)the deeds of darkness and put on (DO)the armor of light. 13 Let us [al](DP)behave properly as in the day, (DQ)not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But (DR)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh (DS)in regard to its lusts.

Principles of Conscience

14 Now (DT)accept the one who is (DU)weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions. (DV)One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is (DW)weak eats vegetables only. The one who eats is not to (DX)regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to (DY)judge the one who eats, for God has (DZ)accepted him. (EA)Who are you to judge the [am]servant of another? To his own [an]master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

(EB)One person [ao]regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be (EC)fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, [ap]does so for the Lord, for he (ED)gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. For not one of us (EE)lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore (EF)whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end (EG)Christ died and lived again, that He might be (EH)Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you (EI)regard your brother with contempt? For (EJ)we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written,

(EK)As I live, says the Lord, (EL)every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall [aq]give praise to God.”

12 So then (EM)each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

13 Therefore let us not (EN)judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—(EO)not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way. 14 I know and am convinced [ar]in the Lord Jesus that (EP)nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who (EQ)thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer (ER)walking according to love. (ES)Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore (ET)do not let what is for you a good thing be [as]spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God (EU)is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and (EV)peace and (EW)joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who in this way (EX)serves Christ is (EY)acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then [at]we (EZ)pursue the things which make for peace and the (FA)building up of one another. 20 (FB)Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. (FC)All things indeed are clean, but (FD)they are evil for the man who eats [au]and gives offense. 21 (FE)It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. 22 The faith which you have, have [av]as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who (FF)does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But (FG)he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.

Self-denial on Behalf of Others

15 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of (FH)those without strength and not just please ourselves. Each of us is to (FI)please his neighbor [aw]for his good, to his (FJ)edification. For even (FK)Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “(FL)The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” For (FM)whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Now may the (FN)God [ax]who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you (FO)to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one [ay]voice glorify (FP)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, (FQ)accept one another, just as Christ also accepted [az]us to the glory of God. For I say that Christ has become a servant to (FR)the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm (FS)the promises given to the fathers, and for (FT)the Gentiles to (FU)glorify God for His mercy; as it is written,

(FV)Therefore I will [ba]give praise to You among the Gentiles,
And I will sing to Your name.”

10 Again he says,

(FW)Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.”

11 And again,

(FX)Praise the Lord all you Gentiles,
And let all the peoples praise Him.”

12 Again Isaiah says,

(FY)There shall come (FZ)the root of Jesse,
And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles,
(GA)In Him shall the Gentiles hope.”

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all (GB)joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope (GC)by the power of the Holy Spirit.

14 And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of (GD)goodness, filled with (GE)all knowledge and able also to admonish one another. 15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of (GF)the grace that was given me [bb]from God, 16 to be (GG)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the (GH)gospel of God, so that my (GI)offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found (GJ)reason for boasting in (GK)things pertaining to God. 18 For I will not presume to speak of anything [bc]except what (GL)Christ has accomplished through me, [bd]resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, 19 in the power of [be](GM)signs and wonders, (GN)in the power of the Spirit; so that (GO)from Jerusalem and round about as (GP)far as Illyricum I have [bf]fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 And thus I aspired to (GQ)preach the gospel, not where Christ was already named, (GR)so that I would not build on another man’s foundation; 21 but as it is written,

(GS)They who had no news of Him shall see,
And they who have not heard shall understand.”

22 For this reason (GT)I have often been prevented from coming to you; 23 but now, with no further place for me in these regions, and since I (GU)have had for many years a longing to come to you 24 whenever I (GV)go to Spain—for I hope to see you in passing, and to be (GW)helped on my way there by you, when I have first (GX)enjoyed your company [bg]for a while— 25 but now, (GY)I am going to Jerusalem (GZ)serving the [bh]saints. 26 For (HA)Macedonia and (HB)Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the [bi]saints in Jerusalem. 27 Yes, they were pleased to do so, and they are indebted to them. For (HC)if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are indebted to minister to them also in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have finished this, and (HD)have [bj]put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will (HE)go on by way of you to Spain. 29 I know that when (HF)I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ.

30 Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by (HG)the love of the Spirit, to (HH)strive together with me in your prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be (HI)rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my (HJ)service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the [bk](HK)saints; 32 so that (HL)I may come to you in joy by (HM)the will of God and find refreshing rest in your company. 33 Now (HN)the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Greetings and Love Expressed

16 I (HO)commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a [bl]servant of the church which is at (HP)Cenchrea; that you (HQ)receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the [bm](HR)saints, and that you help her in whatever matter she may have need of you; for she herself has also been a helper of many, [bn]and of myself as well.

Greet (HS)Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers (HT)in (HU)Christ Jesus, who for my life risked their own necks, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles; also greet (HV)the church that is in their house. Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the (HW)first convert to Christ from [bo](HX)Asia. Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you. Greet Andronicus and [bp]Junias, my (HY)kinsmen and my (HZ)fellow prisoners, who are outstanding among the apostles, who also [bq]were (IA)in Christ before me. Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker (IB)in Christ, and Stachys my beloved. 10 Greet Apelles, the approved (IC)in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus. 11 Greet Herodion, my (ID)kinsman. Greet those of the household of Narcissus, who are in the Lord. 12 Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, workers in the Lord. Greet Persis the beloved, who has worked hard in the Lord. 13 Greet (IE)Rufus, a choice man in the Lord, also his mother and mine. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the brethren with them. 15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all (IF)the [br]saints who are with them. 16 (IG)Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.

17 Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and [bs]hindrances (IH)contrary to the teaching which you learned, and (II)turn away from them. 18 For such men are (IJ)slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of (IK)their own [bt]appetites; and by their (IL)smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. 19 For the report of your obedience (IM)has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but (IN)I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. 20 (IO)The God of peace will soon crush (IP)Satan under your feet.

(IQ)The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

21 (IR)Timothy my fellow worker greets you, and so do (IS)Lucius and (IT)Jason and (IU)Sosipater, my (IV)kinsmen.

22 I, Tertius, who (IW)write this letter, greet you in the Lord.

23 (IX)Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. (IY)Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother. 24 [[bu]The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.]

25 (IZ)Now to Him who is able to establish you (JA)according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of (JB)the mystery which has been kept secret for (JC)long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by (JD)the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to (JE)obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, (JF)be the glory forever. Amen.
