A New Covenant

31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.(A) 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord.(B) 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.(C) 34 No longer shall they teach one another or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord, for I will forgive their iniquity and remember their sin no more.(D)

35 Thus says the Lord,
who gives the sun for light by day
and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
the Lord of hosts is his name:(E)
36 If this fixed order were ever to cease
from my presence, says the Lord,
then also the offspring of Israel would cease
to be a nation before me forever.(F)

37 Thus says the Lord:
If the heavens above can be measured
and the foundations of the earth below can be explored,
then I will reject all the offspring of Israel
because of all they have done,
            says the Lord.(G)

I will strengthen the house of Judah,
and I will save the house of Joseph.
I will bring them back because I have compassion on them,
and they shall be as though I had not rejected them,
for I am the Lord their God, and I will answer them.(A)
Then the people of Ephraim shall become like warriors,
and their hearts shall be glad as with wine.
Their children shall see it and rejoice;
their hearts shall exult in the Lord.(B)

I will signal for them and gather them in,
    for I have redeemed them,
and they shall be as numerous as they were before.(C)
Though I scattered them among the nations,
yet in far countries they shall remember me,
and they shall rear their children and return.(D)
10 I will bring them home from the land of Egypt
    and gather them from Assyria;
I will bring them to the land of Gilead and to Lebanon,
until there is no room for them.(E)
11 They[a] shall pass through the sea of distress,
and the waves of the sea shall be struck down,
and all the depths of the Nile dried up.
The pride of Assyria shall be laid low,
and the scepter of Egypt shall depart.(F)
12 I will make them strong in the Lord,
and they shall walk in his name,
            says the Lord.(G)

and they shall never again be plucked up
out of the land that I have given them,

The Glorious Future of Judah

17 So you shall know that I, the Lord your God,
dwell in Zion, my holy mountain.
And Jerusalem shall be holy,
and strangers shall never again pass through it.(B)

18 In that day
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
the hills shall flow with milk,
and all the streambeds of Judah
    shall flow with water;
a fountain shall come forth from the house of the Lord
    and water the Wadi Shittim.(C)

19 Egypt shall become a desolation
    and Edom a desolate wilderness,
because of the violence done to the people of Judah,
in whose land they have shed innocent blood.(D)
20 But Judah shall be inhabited forever
    and Jerusalem to all generations.(E)
21 I will avenge their blood, and I will not clear the guilty,[a]
for the Lord dwells in Zion.(F)

Never again shall they be two nations, and never again shall they be divided into two kingdoms.(B) 23 They shall never again defile themselves with their idols and their detestable things or with any of their transgressions. I will save them from all the apostasies into which they have fallen[a] and will cleanse them. Then they shall be my people, and I will be their God.(C)
