The Gospel Exalted

1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, [a](A)called as an apostle, (B)set apart for (C)the gospel of God, 2 which He (D)promised beforehand through His (E)prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born (F)of a [b]descendant of David (G)according to the flesh, 4 who was declared (H)the Son of God with power according to the [c]Spirit of holiness [d]by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and (I)apostleship [e]to bring about the (J)obedience of faith among (K)all the Gentiles in behalf of His name, 6 among whom you also are the (L)called of Jesus Christ;

7 to all who are (M)beloved of God in Rome, called as [f](N)saints: (O)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

8 First, (P)I thank my God through Jesus Christ [g]for you all, because (Q)your faith is being proclaimed throughout the world. 9 For (R)God, whom I (S)serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly (T)I make mention of you, 10 always in my prayers requesting if perhaps now, at last by (U)the will of God, I will succeed in coming to you. 11 For (V)I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be [h]established; 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine. 13 (W)I do not want you to be unaware, (X)brothers and sisters, that often I (Y)have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some (Z)fruit among you also just as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 (AA)I am [i]under obligation both to Greeks and to the [j](AB)uncultured, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So, for my part, I am eager to (AC)preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

16 For I am not (AD)ashamed of the gospel, for (AE)it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the (AF)Jew first and also to (AG)the Greek. 17 For in it (AH)the righteousness of God is revealed [k]from faith to faith; as it is written: “[l](AI)But the righteous one will live by faith.”

Unbelief and Its Consequences

18 For (AJ)the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who (AK)suppress the truth [m]in unrighteousness, 19 because (AL)that which is known about God is evident [n]within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For (AM)since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, (AN)being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not [o]honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became (AO)futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22 (AP)Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and they (AQ)exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and [p]crawling creatures.

24 Therefore (AR)God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be (AS)dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [q](AT)falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, (AU)who is blessed [r]forever. Amen.

26 For this reason (AV)God gave them over to (AW)degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, 27 and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations [s]with women and burned in their desire toward one another, (AX)males with males committing [t]shameful acts and receiving in [u]their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28 And just as they did not see fit [v]to acknowledge God, (AY)God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, 29 people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are (AZ)gossips, 30 slanderers, [w](BA)haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, (BB)disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, (BC)unfeeling, and unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of (BD)death, they not only do the same, but also (BE)approve of those who practice them.

Inleiding

1 Deze brief is van Paulus, een dienaar van Jezus Christus.[a] God heeft mij de taak gegeven om het goede nieuws van God aan de mensen te vertellen. 2 In de Boeken staat al over dat goede nieuws geschreven. Want God heeft er vroeger door zijn profeten al over gesproken. 3 Dat goede nieuws gaat over zijn Zoon. Zijn Zoon werd als mens geboren uit de familie van koning David. 4 Jezus werd gedood, maar de Heilige Geest heeft Jezus weer levend gemaakt. Daarmee heeft God duidelijk bewezen dat Jezus de Zoon van God is. Hij is de beloofde Messias,[b] onze Heer. 5 Hij is heel erg goed voor mij geweest. Hij heeft mij al mijn schuld vergeven. En Hij heeft mij een taak gegeven: ik moet de niet-Joodse volken oproepen om in God te gaan geloven en Hem gehoorzaam te zijn.

6 Jullie horen daar ook bij. Ook jullie zijn door Jezus Christus geroepen om bij Hem te horen. 7 Lieve broeders en zusters in Rome, God houdt heel veel van jullie. Hij heeft jullie geroepen om Hem te dienen en bij Hem te horen. Ik bid dat God de Vader in alles goed voor jullie zal zijn. En dat jullie vol zullen zijn van de vrede van God de Vader en van de Heer Jezus Christus.

Paulus wil graag de gemeente in Rome bezoeken

8 In de eerste plaats dank ik mijn God door Jezus Christus voor jullie allemaal. Want overal wordt over jullie geloof gesproken. 9 God weet dat ik altijd voor jullie bid. (En ik dien Hem met hart en ziel, door de mensen het goede nieuws van zijn Zoon te vertellen.) 10 Dan bid ik ook dat God ervoor zal zorgen dat ik eindelijk naar jullie toe kan komen. 11 Want ik wil jullie erg graag zien en jullie geloof verder opbouwen. 12 Dan kunnen we elkaar bemoedigen door ons geloof: ik zal bemoedigd worden door jullie geloof, en jullie zullen bemoedigd worden door mijn geloof.

13 Jullie mogen best weten, broeders en zusters, dat ik al vaak van plan ben geweest om naar jullie toe te komen. Want ik wil ook bij jullie een goed resultaat hebben van mijn werk, net als bij de andere niet-Joodse gelovigen. Maar tot nu toe is het niet gelukt om te komen. 14 Ik moet niet alleen aan de Grieken het goede nieuws vertellen, maar ook aan mensen van andere volken en culturen. En niet alleen aan heel wijze mensen, maar gewoon aan iedereen. 15 Daarom wil ik ook graag aan jullie in Rome het goede nieuws vertellen.

De slechtheid van de mensen

16 Want ik schaam mij niet voor het goede nieuws van Christus. Want het goede nieuws is de kracht van God: iedereen die het gelooft, wordt erdoor gered. Het goede nieuws is op de eerste plaats voor de Joden, maar ook voor de andere volken. 17 Want in het goede nieuws laat God zien, hoe mensen kunnen worden vrijgesproken van hun schuld voor hun ongehoorzaamheid aan God. Namelijk door geloof dat steeds meer groeit. Het is zoals er in de Boeken staat: "Mensen die leven zoals Ik het wil, zullen leven door hun geloof in Mij."

18 De mensen die slechte dingen doen, trekken zich niets van God aan. Daarvoor zullen ze door God gestraft worden. Want ze zijn niet gehoorzaam aan Gods waarheid. Ze verbergen die waarheid zelfs voor andere mensen. 19 Ze hadden God wel kúnnen kennen. Want Hij heeft hun laten zien wat ze van Hem moeten weten. 20 Want Gods eeuwige kracht en goddelijkheid zijn te zien in de natuur. Dat is altijd al zo geweest, vanaf het moment dat de aarde werd gemaakt. Maar ze wíllen God niet kennen. Daarom hebben ze geen excuus dat ze God niet dienen.

21 Ze hadden God dus kunnen kennen door naar de natuur te kijken. Maar tóch hebben ze Hem niet de eer gegeven waar Hij recht op heeft. Ze zijn Hem niet dankbaar geweest. Ze hebben voor alles liever hun eigen verklaring gezocht. Zo is het donker geworden in hun onverstandige hart. 22 Ze vinden zichzelf wel heel wijs en verstandig, maar ze zijn juist dwaas. 23 Want ze hebben de macht en majesteit van de onsterfelijke God niet willen aanbidden. In plaats daarvan hebben ze beelden gemaakt van sterfelijke mensen of dieren en die als goden aanbeden. 24 Daarom gaf God hen in de macht van hun eigen slechte gedachten. Daardoor gingen ze ook heel verkeerde dingen met hun lichaam doen: ze kregen heel verkeerde ideeën over seks. 25 En dat kwam doordat ze Gods waarheid vervingen door leugens. In plaats van God te aanbidden, aanbaden ze dat wat door Hem gemaakt was. Maar juist God Zelf moeten we voor eeuwig prijzen! Amen! Zo is het!

26 En omdat ze God niet wilden aanbidden, heeft Hij hen hun gang laten gaan. Ook toen ze walgelijke dingen op het gebied van seks gingen doen. Hun vrouwen hebben niet meer op de normale manier seks, maar doen allerlei abnormale dingen. 27 En ook de mannen hebben niet meer normaal seks met hun vrouw, zoals het hoort. Nee, ze willen seks met elkaar. Zo hebben mannen seks met mannen. En dat komt doordat ze God niet als God hebben geëerd.

28 Ze hadden dus geen zin om God te eren. Daarom heeft God hen niet tegengehouden toen ze slechte dingen gingen bedenken en doen. 29 Ze zijn oneerlijk, ontrouw, hebzuchtig en gemeen geworden. Ze zitten vol jaloersheid, moord, ruzie, bedrog en wreedheid. 30 Ze roddelen, liegen, beledigen God en scheppen op over zichzelf. Ze weten steeds wel weer wat slechts te bedenken. Ze zijn ongehoorzaam aan hun ouders. 31 Ze zijn onverstandig, onbetrouwbaar, onvriendelijk, haatdragend en liefdeloos. 32 Ze weten heel goed dat God zegt dat zulke mensen de doodstraf verdienen. Maar toch doen ze die dingen. En ze vinden het ook prachtig als andere mensen die dingen doen.

1 Paul, serviteur de Jésus Christ, appelé à être apôtre, mis à part pour annoncer l'Évangile de Dieu, -

2 qui avait été promis auparavant de la part de Dieu par ses prophètes dans les saintes Écritures,

3 et qui concerne son Fils (né de la postérité de David, selon la chair,

4 et déclaré Fils de Dieu avec puissance, selon l'Esprit de sainteté, par sa résurrection d'entre les morts), Jésus Christ notre Seigneur,

5 par qui nous avons reçu la grâce et l'apostolat, pour amener en son nom à l'obéissance de la foi tous les païens,

6 parmi lesquels vous êtes aussi, vous qui avez été appelés par Jésus Christ-

7 à tous ceux qui, à Rome, sont bien-aimés de Dieu, appelés à être saints: que la grâce et la paix vous soient données de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus Christ!

8 Je rends d'abord grâces à mon Dieu par Jésus Christ, au sujet de vous tous, de ce que votre foi est renommée dans le monde entier.

13 Je ne veux pas vous laisser ignorer, frères, que j'ai souvent formé le projet d'aller vous voir, afin de recueillir quelque fruit parmi vous, comme parmi les autres nations; mais j'en ai été empêché jusqu'ici.

14 Je me dois aux Grecs et aux barbares, aux savants et aux ignorants.

15 Ainsi j'ai un vif désir de vous annoncer aussi l'Évangile, à vous qui êtes à Rome.

16 Car je n'ai point honte de l'Évangile: c'est une puissance de Dieu pour le salut de quiconque croit, du Juif premièrement, puis du Grec,

17 parce qu'en lui est révélée la justice de Dieu par la foi et pour la foi, selon qu'il est écrit: Le juste vivra par la foi.

18 La colère de Dieu se révèle du ciel contre toute impiété et toute injustice des hommes qui retiennent injustement la vérité captive,

19 car ce qu'on peut connaître de Dieu est manifeste pour eux, Dieu le leur ayant fait connaître.

20 En effet, les perfections invisibles de Dieu, sa puissance éternelle et sa divinité, se voient comme à l'oeil, depuis la création du monde, quand on les considère dans ses ouvrages. Ils sont donc inexcusables,

21 puisque ayant connu Dieu, ils ne l'ont point glorifié comme Dieu, et ne lui ont point rendu grâces; mais ils se sont égarés dans leurs pensées, et leur coeur sans intelligence a été plongé dans les ténèbres.

22 Se vantant d'être sages, ils sont devenus fous;

23 et ils ont changé la gloire du Dieu incorruptible en images représentant l'homme corruptible, des oiseaux, des quadrupèdes, et des reptiles.

24 C'est pourquoi Dieu les a livrés à l'impureté, selon les convoitises de leurs coeurs; en sorte qu'ils déshonorent eux-mêmes leurs propres corps;

25 eux qui ont changé la vérité de Dieu en mensonge, et qui ont adoré et servi la créature au lieu du Créateur, qui est béni éternellement. Amen!

26 C'est pourquoi Dieu les a livrés à des passions infâmes: car leurs femmes ont changé l'usage naturel en celui qui est contre nature;

27 et de même les hommes, abandonnant l'usage naturel de la femme, se sont enflammés dans leurs désirs les uns pour les autres, commettant homme avec homme des choses infâmes, et recevant en eux-mêmes le salaire que méritait leur égarement.

28 Comme ils ne se sont pas souciés de connaître Dieu, Dieu les a livrés à leur sens réprouvé, pour commettre des choses indignes,

29 étant remplis de toute espèce d'injustice, de méchanceté, de cupidité, de malice; pleins d'envie, de meurtre, de querelle, de ruse, de malignité;

30 rapporteurs, médisants, impies, arrogants, hautains, fanfarons, ingénieux au mal, rebelles à leurs parents, dépourvus d'intelligence,

31 de loyauté, d'affection naturelle, de miséricorde.

32 Et, bien qu'ils connaissent le jugement de Dieu, déclarant dignes de mort ceux qui commettent de telles choses, non seulement ils les font, mais ils approuvent ceux qui les font.

Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,(S) because your faith is being reported all over the world.(T) 9 God, whom I serve(U) in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness(V) how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times;(W) and I pray that now at last by God’s will(X) the way may be opened for me to come to you.(Y)

11 I long to see you(Z) so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift(AA) to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware,(AB) brothers and sisters,[d](AC) that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now)(AD) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

14 I am obligated(AE) both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.(AF)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God(AO) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.(AP) 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,(AQ) so that people are without excuse.(AR)

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.(AS) 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools(AT) 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images(AU) made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over(AV) in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.(AW) 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie,(AX) and worshiped and served created things(AY) rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.(AZ) Amen.(BA)

26 Because of this, God gave them over(BB) to shameful lusts.(BC) Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.(BD) 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.(BE)

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over(BF) to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,(BG) 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;(BH) 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love,(BI) no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death,(BJ) they not only continue to do these very things but also approve(BK) of those who practice them.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
