Romans 9:13-16

New International Version

¹³Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”^[a]^(A)

¹⁴What then shall we say?^(B) Is God unjust? Not at all!^(C) ¹⁵For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”^[b]^(D)

¹⁶It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.^(E)

Certainly not! ¹⁵For He says to Moses, ^(C)“I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” ¹⁶So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.
