Free from Indwelling Sin

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, (A)who[a] do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For (B)the law of (C)the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from (D)the law of sin and death. For (E)what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, (F)God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who (G)do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For (H)those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, (I)the things of the Spirit. For (J)to be [b]carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because (K)the [c]carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, (L)nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of (M)Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (N)He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [d]through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Sonship Through the Spirit

12 (O)Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For (P)if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you (Q)put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For (R)as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For (S)you did not receive the spirit of bondage again (T)to fear, but you received the (U)Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, (V)“Abba,[e] Father.” 16 (W)The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then (X)heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, (Y)if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

From Suffering to Glory

18 For I consider that (Z)the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For (AA)the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For (AB)the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of [f]corruption into the glorious (AC)liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation (AD)groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have (AE)the firstfruits of the Spirit, (AF)even we ourselves groan (AG)within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the (AH)redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but (AI)hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For (AJ)we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but (AK)the Spirit Himself makes intercession [g]for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now (AL)He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints (AM)according to the will of God.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those (AN)who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom (AO)He foreknew, (AP)He also predestined (AQ)to be conformed to the image of His Son, (AR)that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also (AS)called; whom He called, these He also (AT)justified; and whom He justified, these He also (AU)glorified.

God’s Everlasting Love

31 What then shall we say to these things? (AV)If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 (AW)He who did not spare His own Son, but (AX)delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? (AY)It is God who justifies. 34 (AZ)Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, (BA)who is even at the right hand of God, (BB)who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:

(BC)“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 (BD)Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor (BE)principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Solution Is Life on God’s Terms

1-2 With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ’s being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death.

3-4 God went for the jugular when he sent his own Son. He didn’t deal with the problem as something remote and unimportant. In his Son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all. The law code, weakened as it always was by fractured human nature, could never have done that.

The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn’t deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.

5-8 Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored.

9-11 But if God himself has taken up residence in your life, you can hardly be thinking more of yourself than of him. Anyone, of course, who has not welcomed this invisible but clearly present God, the Spirit of Christ, won’t know what we’re talking about. But for you who welcome him, in whom he dwells—even though you still experience all the limitations of sin—you yourself experience life on God’s terms. It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s!

12-14 So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!

15-17 This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!

18-21 That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.

22-25 All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it’s not only around us; it’s within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We’re also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.

26-28 Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

29-30 God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. After God made that decision of what his children should be like, he followed it up by calling people by name. After he called them by name, he set them on a solid basis with himself. And then, after getting them established, he stayed with them to the end, gloriously completing what he had begun.

31-39 So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture:

They kill us in cold blood because they hate you.
We’re sitting ducks; they pick us off one by one.

None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.

The way out—new life in Christ

1-2 No condemnation now hangs over the head of those who are “in” Jesus Christ. For the new spiritual principle of life “in” Christ lifts me out of the old vicious circle of sin and death.

3-4 The Law never succeeded in producing righteousness—the failure was always the weakness of human nature. But God has met this by sending his own Son Jesus Christ to live in that human nature which causes the trouble. And, while Christ was actually taking upon himself the sins of men, God condemned that sinful nature. So that we are able to meet the Law’s requirements, so long as we are living no longer by the dictates of our sinful nature, but in obedience to the promptings of the Spirit.

5-8 The carnal attitude sees no further than natural things. But the spiritual attitude reaches out after the things of the spirit. The former attitude means, bluntly, death: the latter means life and inward peace. And this is only to be expected, for the carnal attitude is inevitably opposed to the purpose of God, and neither can nor will follow his laws for living. Men who hold this attitude cannot possibly please God.

What the presence of Christ within means

9-11 But you are not carnal but spiritual if the Spirit of God finds a home within you. You cannot, indeed, be a Christian at all unless you have something of his Spirit in you. Now if Christ does live within you his presence means that your sinful nature is dead, but your spirit becomes alive because of the righteousness he brings with him. I said that our nature is “dead” in the presence of Christ, and so it is, because of its sin. Nevertheless once the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives within you he will, by that same Spirit, bring to your whole being new strength and vitality.

12-13 So then, my brothers, you can see that we have no particular reason to feel grateful to our sensual nature, or to live life on the level of the instincts. Indeed that way of living leads to certain spiritual death. But if on the other hand you cut the nerve of your instinctive actions by obeying the Spirit, you are on the way to real living.

Christ is within—follow the lead of his Spirit

14-17 All who follow the leading of God’s Spirit are God’s own sons. Nor are you meant to relapse into the old slavish attitude of fear—you have been adopted into the very family circle of God and you can say with a full heart, “Father, my Father”. The Spirit himself endorses our inward conviction that we really are the children of God. Think what that means. If we are his children we share his treasures, and all that Christ claims as his will belong to all of us as well! Yes, if we share in his suffering we shall certainly share in his glory.

Present distress is temporary and negligible

18-21 In my opinion whatever we may have to go through now is less than nothing compared with the magnificent future God has planned for us. The whole creation is on tiptoe to see the wonderful sight of the sons of God coming into their own. The world of creation cannot as yet see reality, not because it chooses to be blind, but because in God’s purpose it has been so limited—yet it has been given hope. And the hope is that in the end the whole of created life will be rescued from the tyranny of change and decay, and have its share in that magnificent liberty which can only belong to the children of God!

22-25 It is plain to anyone with eyes to see that at the present time all created life groans in a sort of universal travail. And it is plain, too, that we who have a foretaste of the Spirit are in a state of painful tension, while we wait for that redemption of our bodies which will mean that at last we have realised our full sonship in him. We were saved by this hope, but in our moments of impatience let us remember that hope always means waiting for something that we haven’t yet got. But if we hope for something we cannot see, then we must settle down to wait for it in patience.

This is not mere theory—the Spirit helps us to find it true

26-27 The Spirit of God not only maintains this hope within us, but helps us in our present limitations. For example, we do not know how to pray worthily as sons of God, but his Spirit within us is actually praying for us in those agonising longings which never find words. And God who knows the heart’s secrets understands, of course, the Spirit’s intention as he prays for those who love God.

28-30 Moreover we know that to those who love God, who are called according to his plan, everything that happens fits into a pattern for good. God, in his foreknowledge, chose them to bear the family likeness of his Son, that he might be the eldest of a family of many brothers. He chose them long ago; when the time came he called them, he made them righteous in his sight, and then lifted them to the splendour of life as his own sons.

We hold, in Christ, an impregnable position

31-32 In face of all this, what is there left to say? If God is for us, who can be against us? He that did not hesitate to spare his own Son but gave him up for us all—can we not trust such a God to give us, with him, everything else that we can need?

33-34 Who would dare to accuse us, whom God has chosen? The judge himself has declared us free from sin. Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us!

35-36 Can anything separate us from the love of Christ? Can trouble, pain or persecution? Can lack of clothes and food, danger to life and limb, the threat of force of arms? Indeed some of us know the truth of the ancient text: ‘For your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter’.

37 No, in all these things we win an overwhelming victory through him who has proved his love for us.

38-39 I have become absolutely convinced that neither death nor life, neither messenger of Heaven nor monarch of earth, neither what happens today nor what may happen tomorrow, neither a power from on high nor a power from below, nor anything else in God’s whole world has any power to separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord!

No hay condenación para los que creen

Por tanto, ahora no hay condenación(A) para los que están en Cristo Jesús[a](B), los que no andan conforme a la carne sino conforme al Espíritu. Porque la ley del Espíritu de vida en Cristo Jesús(C) te[b] ha libertado[c] de la ley del pecado y de la muerte(D).

Pues lo que la ley no pudo hacer, ya que era débil por causa de la carne(E), Dios lo hizo(F): enviando a Su propio Hijo en semejanza de carne de pecado y como ofrenda por el pecado, condenó al pecado en la carne(G), para que el requisito de la ley(H) se cumpliera en nosotros, que no andamos conforme a la carne, sino conforme al Espíritu(I).

Porque los que viven[d] conforme a la carne(J), ponen la mente en las cosas de la carne, pero los que viven conforme al Espíritu, en las cosas del Espíritu(K). Porque la mente puesta en la carne es muerte, pero la mente puesta en el Espíritu es vida y paz(L). La mente puesta en la carne es enemiga de Dios(M), porque no se sujeta a la ley de Dios, pues ni siquiera puede hacerlo, y los que están en la carne(N) no pueden agradar a Dios.

Viviendo según el Espíritu

Sin embargo, ustedes no están en la carne(O) sino en el Espíritu, si en verdad el Espíritu de Dios habita en ustedes(P). Pero si alguien no tiene el Espíritu de Cristo, el tal no es de Él(Q). 10 Y si Cristo está en ustedes, aunque el cuerpo esté muerto a causa del pecado, sin embargo, el espíritu está vivo[e] a causa de la justicia(R). 11 Pero si el Espíritu de Aquel que resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos habita en ustedes(S), el mismo que resucitó a Cristo Jesús de entre los muertos, también dará vida a sus cuerpos mortales por medio de[f] Su Espíritu que habita en ustedes(T).

12 Así que, hermanos, somos deudores, no a la carne, para vivir conforme a la carne. 13 Porque si ustedes viven conforme a la carne, habrán de[g] morir; pero si por el Espíritu hacen morir las obras de la carne[h](U), vivirán(V). 14 Porque todos los que son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios(W), los tales son hijos de Dios(X).

15 Pues ustedes no han recibido un espíritu de esclavitud para volver otra vez al temor[i](Y), sino que han recibido un espíritu[j] de adopción(Z) como hijos, por el cual clamamos: «¡Abba, Padre(AA)!». 16 El Espíritu mismo da testimonio a nuestro espíritu(AB) de que somos hijos de Dios(AC). 17 Y si somos hijos, somos también herederos; herederos de Dios y coherederos con Cristo(AD), si en verdad padecemos con Él a fin de que también seamos glorificados con Él(AE).

La gloria futura

18 Pues considero que los sufrimientos de este tiempo presente no son dignos de ser comparados con la gloria que nos ha de ser revelada(AF). 19 Porque el anhelo profundo(AG) de la creación es aguardar ansiosamente la revelación de los hijos de Dios(AH). 20 Porque la creación fue sometida a vanidad(AI), no de su propia voluntad, sino por causa de Aquel(AJ) que la sometió, en la esperanza 21 de que la creación[k] misma será también liberada de la esclavitud de la corrupción a la libertad de la gloria de los hijos de Dios(AK).

22 Pues sabemos que la creación entera gime y sufre(AL) hasta ahora dolores de parto. 23 Y no solo ella(AM), sino que también nosotros mismos, que tenemos las primicias del Espíritu(AN), aun nosotros mismos gemimos en nuestro interior, aguardando ansiosamente(AO) la adopción como hijos, la redención de nuestro cuerpo(AP). 24 Porque en esperanza hemos sido salvados(AQ), pero la esperanza que se ve no es esperanza, pues, ¿por qué esperar lo que uno ve?[l](AR) 25 Pero si esperamos lo que no vemos, con paciencia[m] lo aguardamos(AS).

Victoriosos en Cristo

26 De la misma manera, también el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad. No sabemos orar como debiéramos(AT), pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros(AU) con gemidos indecibles. 27 Y Aquel que escudriña los corazones(AV) sabe cuál es el sentir[n] del Espíritu(AW), porque Él intercede por los santos(AX) conforme a la voluntad de Dios.

28 Y sabemos que para los que aman a Dios, todas las cosas(AY) cooperan para bien[o], esto es, para los que son llamados(AZ) conforme a Su propósito. 29 Porque a los que de antemano conoció(BA), también los predestinó(BB) a ser hechos conforme a la imagen de Su Hijo(BC), para que Él sea el primogénito(BD) entre muchos hermanos. 30 A los que predestinó(BE), a esos también llamó(BF). A los que llamó, a esos también justificó(BG). A los que justificó, a esos también glorificó(BH).

31 Entonces, ¿qué diremos(BI) a esto? Si Dios está por nosotros, ¿quién estará contra nosotros(BJ)? 32 El que no negó ni a Su propio Hijo(BK), sino que lo entregó por todos nosotros(BL), ¿cómo no nos dará también junto con Él todas las cosas?

33 ¿Quién acusará a los escogidos de Dios(BM)? Dios es el que justifica(BN). 34 ¿Quién es el que condena(BO)? Cristo Jesús es el que murió(BP), sí, más aún, el que resucitó[p](BQ), el que además está a la diestra de Dios(BR), el que también intercede por nosotros(BS).

35 ¿Quién nos separará del amor de Cristo[q](BT)? ¿Tribulación, o angustia(BU), o persecución, o hambre, o desnudez, o peligro, o espada(BV)? 36 Tal como está escrito:

«Por causa Tuya somos puestos a muerte todo el día;
Somos considerados como ovejas para el matadero(BW)».

37 Pero en todas estas cosas somos más que vencedores por medio de Aquel que nos amó(BX).

38 Porque estoy convencido de que ni la muerte, ni la vida(BY), ni ángeles, ni principados, ni lo presente, ni lo por venir, ni los poderes[r](BZ), 39 ni lo alto, ni lo profundo, ni ninguna otra cosa creada nos podrá separar del amor de Dios(CA) que es en Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro(CB).
