14 For all those led by God’s Spirit(A) are God’s sons.(B) 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.(C) Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption,(D) by whom we cry out, “Abba,[a] Father!” (E) 16 The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit(F) that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs(G)—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with him(H) so that we may also be glorified with him.

From Groans to Glory

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing(I) with the glory(J) that is going to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation eagerly waits with anticipation(K) for God’s sons(L) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected(M) to futility(N)—not willingly, but because of him who subjected it(O)—in the hope 21 that the creation itself(P) will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains(Q) until now. 23 Not only that,(R) but we ourselves who have the Spirit as the firstfruits(S)—we also groan within ourselves,(T) eagerly waiting for adoption,(U) the redemption of our bodies.(V) 24 Now in this hope(W) we were saved, but hope(X) that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees? 25 Now if we hope for what we do not see,(Y) we eagerly wait for it with patience.

26 In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should,(Z) but the Spirit himself intercedes for us[b](AA) with inexpressible groanings. 27 And he who searches our hearts(AB) knows the mind of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

28 We know that all things work together[c] for the good[d] of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.(AC) 29 For those he foreknew he also predestined(AD) to be conformed to the image of his Son,(AE) so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.(AF)

14 For all who are (A)led by the Spirit of God are (B)sons[a] of God. 15 For (C)you did not receive (D)the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of (E)adoption as sons, by whom we cry, (F)“Abba! Father!” 16 (G)The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then (H)heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (I)provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Future Glory

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (J)are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for (K)the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation (L)was subjected to futility, not willingly, but (M)because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that (N)the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that (O)the whole creation (P)has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have (Q)the firstfruits of the Spirit, (R)groan inwardly as (S)we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, (T)the redemption of our bodies. 24 For (U)in this hope we were saved. Now (V)hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we (W)wait for it with patience.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For (X)we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but (Y)the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And (Z)he who searches hearts knows what is (AA)the mind of the Spirit, because[b] the Spirit (AB)intercedes for the saints (AC)according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together (AD)for good,[c] for (AE)those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he (AF)foreknew he also (AG)predestined (AH)to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be (AI)the firstborn among many brothers.

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children[a] of God.

15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.[b] Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”[c] 16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. 17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

The Future Glory

18 Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. 19 For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. 20 Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, 21 the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. 22 For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children,[d] including the new bodies he has promised us. 24 We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope[e] for it. 25 But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)

26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers[f] in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together[g] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn[h] among many brothers and sisters.
