Released From the Law, Bound to Christ
7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters(A)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(B) 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(C) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(D) through the body of Christ,(E) that you might belong to another,(F) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a](G) the sinful passions aroused by the law(H) were at work in us,(I) so that we bore fruit for death.(J) 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(K) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(L)
The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then?(M) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(N) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(O) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b](P) 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(Q) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(R) 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(S) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(T) deceived me,(U) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(V)
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(W) to bring about my death,(X) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(Y) sold(Z) as a slave to sin.(AA) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(AB) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(AC) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(AD) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c](AE) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(AF) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(AG)
21 So I find this law at work:(AH) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(AI) I delight in God’s law;(AJ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(AK) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(AL) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(AM) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(AN)
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(AO) but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.(AP)

7 Meus irmãos, falo a vocês como a pessoas que conhecem a lei. Acaso vocês não sabem que a lei tem autoridade sobre alguém apenas enquanto ele vive? 2 Por exemplo, pela lei a mulher casada está ligada a seu marido enquanto ele estiver vivo; mas, se o marido morrer, ela estará livre da lei do casamento. 3 Por isso, se ela se casar com outro homem enquanto seu marido ainda estiver vivo, será considerada adúltera. Mas se o marido morrer, ela estará livre daquela lei, e mesmo que venha a se casar com outro homem, não será adúltera.
4 Assim, meus irmãos, vocês também morreram para a Lei, por meio do corpo de Cristo, para pertencerem a outro, àquele que ressuscitou dos mortos, a fim de que venhamos a dar fruto para Deus. 5 Pois quando éramos controlados pela carne[a], as paixões pecaminosas despertadas pela Lei atuavam em nosso corpo, de forma que dávamos fruto para a morte. 6 Mas agora, morrendo para aquilo que antes nos prendia, fomos libertados da Lei, para que sirvamos conforme o novo modo do Espírito, e não segundo a velha forma da Lei escrita.
A Luta contra o Pecado
7 Que diremos então? A Lei é pecado? De maneira nenhuma! De fato, eu não saberia o que é pecado, a não ser por meio da Lei. Pois, na realidade, eu não saberia o que é cobiça, se a Lei não dissesse: “Não cobiçarás”[b]. 8 Mas o pecado, aproveitando a oportunidade dada pelo mandamento, produziu em mim todo tipo de desejo cobiçoso. Pois, sem a Lei, o pecado está morto. 9 Antes eu vivia sem a Lei, mas quando o mandamento veio, o pecado reviveu, e eu morri. 10 Descobri que o próprio mandamento, destinado a produzir vida, na verdade produziu morte. 11 Pois o pecado, aproveitando a oportunidade dada pelo mandamento, enganou-me e por meio do mandamento me matou.
12 De fato a Lei é santa, e o mandamento é santo, justo e bom. 13 E então, o que é bom se tornou em morte para mim? De maneira nenhuma! Mas, para que o pecado se mostrasse como pecado, ele produziu morte em mim por meio do que era bom, de modo que por meio do mandamento ele se mostrasse extremamente pecaminoso.
14 Sabemos que a Lei é espiritual; eu, contudo, não o sou, pois fui vendido como escravo ao pecado. 15 Não entendo o que faço. Pois não faço o que desejo, mas o que odeio. 16 E, se faço o que não desejo, admito que a Lei é boa. 17 Neste caso, não sou mais eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim. 18 Sei que nada de bom habita em mim, isto é, em minha carne. Porque tenho o desejo de fazer o que é bom, mas não consigo realizá-lo. 19 Pois o que faço não é o bem que desejo, mas o mal que não quero fazer, esse eu continuo fazendo. 20 Ora, se faço o que não quero, já não sou eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
21 Assim, encontro esta lei que atua em mim: Quando quero fazer o bem, o mal está junto a mim. 22 No íntimo do meu ser tenho prazer na Lei de Deus; 23 mas vejo outra lei atuando nos membros do meu corpo, guerreando contra a lei da minha mente, tornando-me prisioneiro da lei do pecado que atua em meus membros. 24 Miserável homem que eu sou! Quem me libertará do corpo sujeito a esta morte? 25 Graças a Deus por Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor! De modo que, com a mente, eu próprio sou escravo da Lei de Deus; mas, com a carne, da lei do pecado.

7 Or do you not know, (A)brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the [a]Law), that the [b]Law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? 2 For (B)the married woman is bound by law to her [c]husband as long as he is alive; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law [d]concerning the husband. 3 So then, if while her husband is alive she [e]gives herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress if she [f]gives herself to another man.
4 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were (C)put to death (D)in regard to the Law (E)through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were (F)in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were (G)brought to light by the Law, were at work (H)in [g]the parts of our body to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we have been (I)released from the Law, having (J)died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in (K)newness of (L)the [h]Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
7 (M)What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? (N)[i]Far from it! On the contrary, (O)I would not have come to know sin except [j]through the Law; for I would not have known about [k]coveting if the Law had not said, “(P)You shall not [l]covet.” 8 But sin, (Q)taking an opportunity (R)through the commandment, produced in me [m]coveting of every kind; for (S)apart [n]from the Law sin is dead. 9 I was once alive apart [o]from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was [p](T)to result in life, proved [q]to result in death for me; 11 for sin, (U)taking an opportunity (V)through the commandment, (W)deceived me, and through it, killed me. 12 (X)So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? [r](Y)Far from it! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.
The Conflict of Serving Two Masters
14 For we know that the Law is (Z)spiritual, but I am (AA)fleshly, (AB)sold [s](AC)into bondage to sin. 15 For (AD)I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing (AE)what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 However, if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with (AF)the Law, that the Law is good. 17 But now, (AG)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my (AH)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For (AI)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I do the very thing I do not want, (AJ)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.
21 I find then (AK)the [t]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully agree with the law of God [u]in (AL)the inner person, 23 but I see (AM)a different law in [v]the parts of my body waging war against the (AN)law of my mind, and making me a prisoner [w]of (AO)the law of sin, the law which is in [x]my body’s parts. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [y](AP)the body of this (AQ)death? 25 (AR)Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh (AS)the law of sin.

Estando mortos à lei, sirvamos a Deus em novidade de espírito
7 Não sabeis vós, irmãos (pois que falo aos que sabem a lei), que a lei tem domínio sobre o homem por todo o tempo que vive? 2 Porque a mulher que está sujeita ao marido, enquanto ele viver, está-lhe ligada pela lei; mas, morto o marido, está livre da lei do marido. 3 De sorte que, vivendo o marido, será chamada adúltera se for doutro marido; mas, morto o marido, livre está da lei e assim não será adúltera se for doutro marido. 4 Assim, meus irmãos, também vós estais mortos para a lei pelo corpo de Cristo, para que sejais doutro, daquele que ressuscitou de entre os mortos, a fim de que demos fruto para Deus. 5 Porque, quando estávamos na carne, as paixões dos pecados, que são pela lei, operavam em nossos membros para darem fruto para a morte. 6 Mas, agora, estamos livres da lei, pois morremos para aquilo em que estávamos retidos; para que sirvamos em novidade de espírito, e não na velhice da letra.
A lei opera em nós a morte. A luta da carne com o espírito
7 Que diremos, pois? É a lei pecado? De modo nenhum! Mas eu não conheci o pecado senão pela lei; porque eu não conheceria a concupiscência, se a lei não dissesse: Não cobiçarás. 8 Mas o pecado, tomando ocasião pelo mandamento, despertou em mim toda a concupiscência: porquanto, sem a lei, estava morto o pecado. 9 E eu, nalgum tempo, vivia sem lei, mas, vindo o mandamento, reviveu o pecado, e eu morri; 10 e o mandamento que era para vida, achei eu que me era para morte. 11 Porque o pecado, tomando ocasião pelo mandamento, me enganou e, por ele, me matou. 12 Assim, a lei é santa; e o mandamento, santo, justo e bom.
13 Logo, tornou-se-me o bom em morte? De modo nenhum! Mas o pecado, para que se mostrasse pecado, operou em mim a morte pelo bem, a fim de que pelo mandamento o pecado se fizesse excessivamente maligno. 14 Porque bem sabemos que a lei é espiritual; mas eu sou carnal, vendido sob o pecado. 15 Porque o que faço, não o aprovo, pois o que quero, isso não faço; mas o que aborreço, isso faço. 16 E, se faço o que não quero, consinto com a lei, que é boa. 17 De maneira que, agora, já não sou eu que faço isto, mas o pecado que habita em mim. 18 Porque eu sei que em mim, isto é, na minha carne, não habita bem algum; e, com efeito, o querer está em mim, mas não consigo realizar o bem. 19 Porque não faço o bem que quero, mas o mal que não quero, esse faço. 20 Ora, se eu faço o que não quero, já o não faço eu, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
21 Acho, então, esta lei em mim: que, quando quero fazer o bem, o mal está comigo. 22 Porque, segundo o homem interior, tenho prazer na lei de Deus. 23 Mas vejo nos meus membros outra lei que batalha contra a lei do meu entendimento e me prende debaixo da lei do pecado que está nos meus membros. 24 Miserável homem que eu sou! Quem me livrará do corpo desta morte? 25 Dou graças a Deus por Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor. Assim que eu mesmo, com o entendimento, sirvo à lei de Deus, mas, com a carne, à lei do pecado.
