²¹ So I find this law at work:^(A) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. ²² For in my inner being^(B) I delight in God’s law;^{(C) 23} but I see another law at work in me, waging war^(D) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin^(E) at work within me. ²⁴ What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?^{(F) 25} Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!^(G)

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,^(H) but in my sinful nature^[a] a slave to the law of sin.^(I)

Life Through the Spirit

8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation^(J) for those who are in Christ Jesus,^{(K) 2} because through Christ Jesus^(L) the law of the Spirit who gives life^(M) has set you^[b] free^(N) from the law of sin^(O) and death. ³ For what the law was powerless^(P) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,^[c](Q) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh^(R) to be a sin offering.^[d](S) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, ⁴ in order that the righteous requirement^(T) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.^(U)

⁵ Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;^(V) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.^{(W) 6} The mind governed by the flesh is death,^(X) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life^(Y) and peace.
