No Longer Slaves to Sin, but God’s Servants

What should we say then? Should we continue to sin so that God’s kindness [a] will increase? That’s unthinkable! As far as sin is concerned, we have died. So how can we still live under sin’s influence?

Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? When we were baptized into his death, we were placed into the tomb with him. As Christ was brought back from death to life by the glorious power of the Father, so we, too, should live a new kind of life. If we’ve become united with him in a death like his, certainly we will also be united with him when we come back to life as he did. We know that the person we used to be was crucified with him to put an end to sin in our bodies. Because of this we are no longer slaves to sin. The person who has died has been freed from sin.

If we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, who was brought back to life, will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. 10 When he died, he died once and for all to sin’s power. But now he lives, and he lives for God. 11 So consider yourselves dead to sin’s power but living for God in the power Christ Jesus gives you.

12 Therefore, never let sin rule your physical body so that you obey its desires. 13 Never offer any part of your body to sin’s power. No part of your body should ever be used to do any ungodly thing. Instead, offer yourselves to God as people who have come back from death and are now alive. Offer all the parts of your body to God. Use them to do everything that God approves of. 14 Certainly, sin shouldn’t have power over you because you’re not controlled by God’s laws, but by God’s favor.[b]

15 Then what is the implication? Should we sin because we are not controlled by God’s laws but by God’s favor? That’s unthinkable! 16 Don’t you know that if you offer to be someone’s slave, you must obey that master? Either your master is sin, or your master is obedience. Letting sin be your master leads to death. Letting obedience be your master leads to God’s approval. 17 You were slaves to sin. But I thank God that you have become wholeheartedly obedient to the teachings which you were given. 18 Freed from sin, you were made slaves who do what God approves of.

19 I’m speaking in a human way because of the weakness of your corrupt nature. Clearly, you once offered all the parts of your body as slaves to sexual perversion and disobedience. This led you to live disobedient lives. Now, in the same way, offer all the parts of your body as slaves that do what God approves of. This leads you to live holy lives. 20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from doing what God approves of.

21 What did you gain by doing those things? You’re ashamed of what you used to do because it ended in death. 22 Now you have been freed from sin and have become God’s slaves. This results in a holy life and, finally, in everlasting life. 23 The payment for sin is death, but the gift that God freely gives is everlasting life found in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We arrive here, children of a common ancestor, Adam. As such, we have inherited his traits, physically and spiritually. Although our sin may be of a different sort than his, we sin no less than Adam. The proof of that is death. Adam opens the way for sin and death to pursue us and run rampant across the earth. But from the beginning, God has a plan to reverse the curse. At just the right moment in human history, Jesus arrives, a son of Adam and the Son of God. Through His faithful obedience to His Father, He challenges the twin powers of sin and death and defeats them. Sin no longer reigns unchecked. Death no longer has the last word.

How should we respond to all of this? Is it good to persist in a life of sin so that grace may multiply even more? Absolutely not! How can we die to a life where sin ruled over us and then invite sin back into our lives? Did someone forget to tell you that when we were initiated into Jesus the Anointed through baptism’s ceremonial washing,[a] we entered into His death? Therefore, we were buried with Him through this baptism into death so that just as God the Father, in all His glory, resurrected the Anointed One, we, too, might walk confidently out of the grave into a new life. To put it another way: if we have been united with Him to share in a death like His, don’t you understand that we will also share in His resurrection? We know this: whatever we used to be with our old sinful ways has been nailed to His cross. So our entire record of sin has been canceled, and we no longer have to bow down to sin’s power. A dead man, you see, cannot be bound by sin. But if we have died with the Anointed One, we believe that we shall also live together with Him. So we stand firm in the conviction that death holds no power over God’s Anointed, because He was resurrected from the dead never to face death again. 10 When He died, He died to whatever power sin had, once and for all, and now He lives completely to God. 11 So here is how to picture yourself now that you have been initiated into Jesus the Anointed: you are dead to sin’s power and influence, but you are alive to God’s rule.

12 Don’t invite that insufferable tyrant of sin back into your mortal body so you won’t become obedient to its destructive desires. 13 Don’t offer your bodily members to sin’s service as tools of wickedness; instead, offer your body to God as those who are alive from the dead, and devote the parts of your body to God as tools for justice and goodness in this world. 14 For sin is no longer a tyrant over you; indeed you are under grace and not the law.

Now sin and death no longer define us, but grace does: God’s favor has been given freely to us through His Son, Jesus, who liberates us from sin’s power.

15 So what do we do now? Throw ourselves into lives of sin because we are cloaked in grace and don’t have to answer to the law? Absolutely not! 16 Doesn’t it make sense that if you sign yourself over as a slave, you will have to obey your master? The question before you is, What will be your master? Will it be sin—which will lead to certain death—or obedience—which will lead to a right and reconciled life? 17 Thank God that your slavery to sin has ended and that in your new freedom you pledged your heartfelt obedience to that teaching which was passed on to you. 18 The beauty of your new situation is this: now that you are free from sin, you are free to serve a different master, God’s redeeming justice.

19 Forgive me for using casual language to compensate for your natural weakness of human understanding. I want to be perfectly clear. In the same way you gave your bodily members away as slaves to corrupt and lawless living and found yourselves deeper in your unruly lives, now devote your members as slaves to right and reconciled lives so you will find yourselves deeper in holy living. 20 In the days when you lived as slaves to sin, you had no obligation to do the right thing. In that regard, you were free. 21 But what do you have to show from your former lives besides shame? The outcome of that life is death, guaranteed. 22 But now that you have been emancipated from the death grip of sin and are God’s slave, you have a different sort of life, a growing holiness. The outcome of that life is eternal life. 23 The payoff for a life of sin is death, but God is offering us a free gift—eternal life through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, the Liberating King.

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

15 What then? (AB)Are we to sin because we are not under [p]the Law but under grace? [q](AC)Far from it! 16 Do you not (AD)know that the one to whom you present yourselves as (AE)slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of (AF)sin [r]resulting in death, or of obedience [s]resulting in righteousness? 17 But (AG)thanks be to God that [t]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [u](AH)form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being (AI)freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness. 19 (AJ)I am speaking [v]in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For the outcome of those things is (AN)death. 22 But now having been (AO)freed from sin and (AP)enslaved to God, you [ac]derive your [ad](AQ)benefit, [ae]resulting in sanctification, and (AR)the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of (AS)sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is (AT)eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Muertos al pecado

¿Qué diremos, entonces(A)? ¿Continuaremos en pecado para que la gracia abunde(B)? ¡De ningún modo(C)! Nosotros, que hemos muerto al pecado, ¿cómo viviremos aún en él(D)? ¿O no saben ustedes que todos los que hemos sido bautizados(E) en Cristo Jesús(F), hemos sido bautizados en Su muerte?

Por tanto, hemos sido sepultados con Él por medio del bautismo para muerte, a fin de que como Cristo resucitó de entre los muertos(G) por la gloria del Padre(H), así también nosotros andemos en novedad de vida(I). Porque si hemos sido unidos[a] a Cristo en la semejanza[b] de Su muerte(J), ciertamente lo seremos también en la semejanza de Su resurrección.

Sabemos esto, que nuestro viejo hombre(K) fue crucificado con Cristo(L), para que nuestro cuerpo de pecado(M) fuera destruido[c], a fin de que ya no seamos esclavos del pecado; porque el que ha muerto, ha sido libertado[d] del pecado(N).

Y si hemos muerto con Cristo, creemos que también viviremos con Él(O), sabiendo que Cristo, habiendo resucitado de entre los muertos(P), no volverá a morir; la muerte ya no tiene dominio sobre Él(Q). 10 Porque en cuanto a que Él murió, murió al pecado de una vez para siempre; pero en cuanto Él vive, vive para Dios. 11 Así también ustedes, considérense muertos para el pecado, pero vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús[e](R).

Siervos, no del pecado, sino de la justicia

12 Por tanto, no reine el pecado en su cuerpo mortal(S) para que ustedes no obedezcan a sus lujurias; 13 ni presenten los miembros de su cuerpo[f](T) al pecado como instrumentos[g] de iniquidad, sino preséntense ustedes mismos a Dios como vivos de entre los muertos, y sus miembros a Dios como instrumentos[h] de justicia(U). 14 Porque el pecado no tendrá dominio sobre ustedes(V), pues no están bajo la ley(W) sino bajo la gracia(X).

Libertados del pecado

15 ¿Entonces qué? ¿Pecaremos porque no estamos bajo la ley, sino bajo la gracia(Y)? ¡De ningún modo(Z)! 16 ¿No saben ustedes(AA) que cuando se presentan como esclavos a alguien para obedecerle[i], son esclavos de aquel a quien obedecen, ya sea del pecado(AB) para muerte(AC), o de la obediencia para justicia? 17 Pero gracias a Dios(AD), que aunque ustedes eran esclavos del pecado, se hicieron[j] obedientes de corazón a aquella forma de doctrina a la que fueron entregados(AE), 18 y habiendo sido libertados del pecado, ustedes se han hecho siervos de la justicia(AF).

19 Hablo en términos humanos(AG), por causa de la debilidad de su carne. Porque de la manera que ustedes presentaron sus miembros como esclavos a la impureza y a la iniquidad, para iniquidad, así ahora presenten sus miembros como esclavos a la justicia(AH), para santificación. 20 Porque cuando ustedes eran esclavos del pecado, eran libres en cuanto a la justicia(AI).

21 ¿Qué fruto tenían entonces en[k] aquellas cosas de las cuales ahora se avergüenzan? Porque el fin de esas cosas es muerte(AJ). 22 Pero ahora, habiendo sido libertados del pecado(AK) y hechos siervos de Dios(AL), tienen por su fruto(AM) la santificación, y como resultado la vida eterna(AN). 23 Porque la paga del pecado es muerte(AO), pero la dádiva de Dios es vida eterna en Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro(AP).
