18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,(A) so also one righteous act resulted in justification(B) and life(C) for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man(D) the many were made sinners,(E) so also through the obedience(F) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.(G) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,(H) 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(I) so also grace(J) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life(K) through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

What shall we say, then?(L) Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?(M) By no means! We are those who have died to sin;(N) how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized(O) into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death(P) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead(Q) through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.(R)

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.(S) For we know that our old self(T) was crucified with him(U) so that the body ruled by sin(V) might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin(W) because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.(X)

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.(Y) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,(Z) he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.(AA) 10 The death he died, he died to sin(AB) once for all;(AC) but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin(AD) but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign(AE) in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness,(AF) but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.(AG) 14 For sin shall no longer be your master,(AH) because you are not under the law,(AI) but under grace.(AJ)

Footnotes

  1. Romans 6:6 Or be rendered powerless

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
