Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, (A)our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but (B)not before God. For what does the Scripture say? (C)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now (D)to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but (E)believes in[a] him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

(F)“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
    and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not (G)count his sin.”

Is this blessing then only for (H)the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? (I)For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 (J)He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was (K)to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12 and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

The Promise Realized Through Faith

13 For (L)the promise to Abraham and his offspring (M)that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 (N)For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For (O)the law brings wrath, but (P)where there is no law (Q)there is no transgression.

16 That is why it depends on faith, (R)in order that the promise may rest on grace and (S)be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, (T)who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, (U)“I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, (V)who gives life to the dead and calls into existence (W)the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, (X)“So shall your offspring be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was (Y)as good as dead ((Z)since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered (AA)the barrenness[b] of Sarah's womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that (AB)God was able to do what he had promised. 22 That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” 23 But (AC)the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us (AD)who believe in (AE)him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 (AF)who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised (AG)for our justification.

We Have God’s Approval by Faith

What can we say that we have discovered about our ancestor Abraham? If Abraham had God’s approval because of something he did, he would have had a reason to brag. But he could not brag to God about it. What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and that faith was regarded as the basis of Abraham’s approval by God.”

When people work, their pay is not regarded as a gift but something they have earned. However, when people don’t work but believe God, the one who approves ungodly people, their faith is regarded as the basis of God’s approval. David says the same thing about those who are blessed: God approves of people without their earning it. David said,

“Blessed are those whose disobedience is forgiven
and whose sins are pardoned.
Blessed is the person whom the Lord no longer considers sinful.”

Are only the circumcised people blessed, or are uncircumcised people blessed as well? We say, “Abraham’s faith was regarded as the basis of God’s approval.” 10 How was his faith regarded as the basis of God’s approval? Was he circumcised or was he uncircumcised at that time? He had not been circumcised. 11 Abraham’s faith was the basis of his approval by God while he was still uncircumcised. The mark of circumcision is the seal of that approval. Therefore, he is the father of every believer who is not circumcised, and their faith, too, is regarded as the basis of their approval by God. 12 He is also the father of those who not only are circumcised but also are following in the footsteps of his faith. Our father Abraham had that faith before he was circumcised.

13 So it was not by obeying the laws in Moses’ Teachings that Abraham or his descendants received the promise that he would inherit the world. Rather, he received this promise through God’s approval that comes by faith. 14 If those who obey Moses’ Teachings are the heirs, then faith is useless and the promise is worthless. 15 The laws in Moses’ Teachings bring about anger. But where those laws don’t exist, they can’t be broken. 16 Therefore, the promise is based on faith so that it can be a gift.[a] Consequently, the promise is guaranteed for every descendant, not only for those who are descendants by obeying Moses’ Teachings but also for those who are descendants by believing as Abraham did. He is the father of all of us, 17 as Scripture says: “I have made you a father of many nations.”

Abraham believed when he stood in the presence of the God who gives life to dead people and calls into existence things that don’t even exist. 18 When there was nothing left to hope for, Abraham still hoped and believed. As a result, he became a father of many nations, as he had been told: “That is how many descendants you will have.” 19 Abraham didn’t weaken. Through faith he regarded the facts: His body was already as good as dead now that he was about a hundred years old, and Sarah was unable to have children. 20 He didn’t doubt God’s promise out of a lack of faith. Instead, giving honor to God ⌞for the promise⌟, he became strong because of faith 21 and was absolutely confident that God would do what he promised. 22 That is why Abraham’s faith was regarded as the basis of his approval by God.

23 But the words “his faith was regarded as the basis of his approval by God” were written not only for him 24 but also for us. Our faith will be regarded as the basis of our approval by God—each of us who believe in the one who brought Jesus, our Lord, back to life. 25 Jesus, our Lord, was handed over to death because of our failures and was brought back to life so that we could receive God’s approval.

El ejemplo de Abraham

¿Qué, pues, diremos que halló Abraham, nuestro padre según la carne? Porque si Abraham fue justificado por las obras, tiene de qué gloriarse, pero no para con Dios. Porque ¿qué dice la Escritura? Creyó Abraham a Dios, y le fue contado por justicia.(A) Pero al que obra, no se le cuenta el salario como gracia, sino como deuda; mas al que no obra, sino cree en aquel que justifica al impío, su fe le es contada por justicia. Como también David habla de la bienaventuranza del hombre a quien Dios atribuye justicia sin obras, diciendo:

Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades son perdonadas,

Y cuyos pecados son cubiertos.

Bienaventurado el varón a quien el Señor no inculpa de pecado.(B)

¿Es, pues, esta bienaventuranza solamente para los de la circuncisión, o también para los de la incircuncisión? Porque decimos que a Abraham le fue contada la fe por justicia. 10 ¿Cómo, pues, le fue contada? ¿Estando en la circuncisión, o en la incircuncisión? No en la circuncisión, sino en la incircuncisión. 11 Y recibió la circuncisión(C) como señal, como sello de la justicia de la fe que tuvo estando aún incircunciso; para que fuese padre de todos los creyentes no circuncidados, a fin de que también a ellos la fe les sea contada por justicia; 12 y padre de la circuncisión, para los que no solamente son de la circuncisión, sino que también siguen las pisadas de la fe que tuvo nuestro padre Abraham antes de ser circuncidado.

La promesa realizada mediante la fe

13 Porque no por la ley fue dada a Abraham o a su descendencia la promesa de que sería heredero del mundo,(D) sino por la justicia de la fe. 14 Porque si los que son de la ley son los herederos, vana resulta la fe, y anulada la promesa.(E) 15 Pues la ley produce ira; pero donde no hay ley, tampoco hay transgresión.

16 Por tanto, es por fe, para que sea por gracia, a fin de que la promesa sea firme para toda su descendencia; no solamente para la que es de la ley, sino también para la que es de la fe de Abraham, el cual es padre de todos nosotros(F) 17 (como está escrito: Te he puesto por padre de muchas gentes(G)) delante de Dios, a quien creyó, el cual da vida a los muertos, y llama las cosas que no son, como si fuesen. 18 Él creyó en esperanza contra esperanza, para llegar a ser padre de muchas gentes, conforme a lo que se le había dicho: Así será tu descendencia.(H) 19 Y no se debilitó en la fe al considerar su cuerpo, que estaba ya como muerto (siendo de casi cien años(I)), o la esterilidad de la matriz de Sara. 20 Tampoco dudó, por incredulidad, de la promesa de Dios, sino que se fortaleció en fe, dando gloria a Dios, 21 plenamente convencido de que era también poderoso para hacer todo lo que había prometido; 22 por lo cual también su fe le fue contada por justicia. 23 Y no solamente con respecto a él se escribió que le fue contada, 24 sino también con respecto a nosotros a quienes ha de ser contada, esto es, a los que creemos en el que levantó de los muertos a Jesús, Señor nuestro, 25 el cual fue entregado por nuestras transgresiones, y resucitado para nuestra justificación.

Что же, скажем, Авраам, отец наш, приобрел по плоти?

Если Авраам оправдался делами, он имеет похвалу, но не пред Богом.

Ибо что говорит Писание? Поверил Авраам Богу, и это вменилось ему в праведность.

Воздаяние делающему вменяется не по милости, но по долгу.

А не делающему, но верующему в Того, Кто оправдывает нечестивого, вера его вменяется в праведность.

Так и Давид называет блаженным человека, которому Бог вменяет праведность независимо от дел:

Блаженны, чьи беззакония прощены и чьи грехи покрыты.

Блажен человек, которому Господь не вменит греха.

Блаженство сие [относится] к обрезанию, или к необрезанию? Мы говорим, что Аврааму вера вменилась в праведность.

10 Когда вменилась? по обрезании или до обрезания? Не по обрезании, а до обрезания.

11 И знак обрезания он получил, [как] печать праведности через веру, которую [имел] в необрезании, так что он стал отцом всех верующих в необрезании, чтобы и им вменилась праведность,

12 и отцом обрезанных, не только [принявших] обрезание, но и ходящих по следам веры отца нашего Авраама, которую [имел он] в необрезании.

13 Ибо не законом [даровано] Аврааму, или семени его, обетование--быть наследником мира, но праведностью веры.

14 Если утверждающиеся на законе суть наследники, то тщетна вера, бездейственно обетование;

15 ибо закон производит гнев, потому что, где нет закона, нет и преступления.

16 Итак по вере, чтобы [было] по милости, дабы обетование было непреложно для всех, не только по закону, но и по вере потомков Авраама, который есть отец всем нам

17 (как написано: Я поставил тебя отцом многих народов) пред Богом, Которому он поверил, животворящим мертвых и называющим несуществующее, как существующее.

18 Он, сверх надежды, поверил с надеждою, через что сделался отцом многих народов, по сказанному: 'так [многочисленно] будет семя твое'.

19 И, не изнемогши в вере, он не помышлял, что тело его, почти столетнего, уже омертвело, и утроба Саррина в омертвении;

20 не поколебался в обетовании Божием неверием, но пребыл тверд в вере, воздав славу Богу

21 и будучи вполне уверен, что Он силен и исполнить обещанное.

22 Потому и вменилось ему в праведность.

23 А впрочем не в отношении к нему одному написано, что вменилось ему,

24 но и в отношении к нам; вменится и нам, верующим в Того, Кто воскресил из мертвых Иисуса Христа, Господа нашего,

25 Который предан за грехи наши и воскрес для оправдания нашего.
