What if some were unfaithful? Will their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?(A) By no means! Although every human is a liar, let God be proved true, as it is written,

“So that you may be justified in your words
    and you will prevail[a] when you go to trial.”(B)

But if our injustice serves to confirm the justice of God, what should we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.)(C) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? But if through my falsehood God’s truthfulness abounds to his glory, why am I still being judged as a sinner? And why not say (as some people slander us by saying that we say), “Let us do evil so that good may come”? Their judgment is deserved!(D)

None Is Righteous

What then? Are we any better off?[b] No, not at all, for we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin,(E) 10 as it is written:

“There is no one who is righteous, not even one;(F)
11     there is no one who has understanding;
        there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    there is no one who shows kindness;
        there is not even one.”
13 “Their throats are opened graves;
    they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of vipers is under their lips.”(G)
14     “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;(H)
16     ruin and misery are in their paths,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.”
18     “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

What if some were unfaithful?(A) Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?(B) Not at all! Let God be true,(C) and every human being a liar.(D) As it is written:

“So that you may be proved right when you speak
    and prevail when you judge.”[a](E)

But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly,(F) what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.)(G) Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?(H) Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory,(I) why am I still condemned as a sinner?”(J) Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”?(K) Their condemnation is just!

No One Is Righteous

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage?(L) Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.(M) 10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;
11     there is no one who understands;
    there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
    they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    not even one.”[b](N)

    their tongues practice deceit.”[c](O)

17 and the way of peace they do not know.”[f](R)
18     “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[g](S)
