but for those who are self-seeking[a] and (A)do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress (B)for every human being who does evil, the Jew (C)first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and (D)peace for everyone who does good, (E)the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For (F)God shows no partiality.

God's Judgment and the Law

12 For all who have sinned (G)without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For (H)it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, (I)by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is (J)written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 (K)on that day when, (L)according to my gospel, God judges (M)the secrets of men (N)by Christ Jesus.

17 But if you call yourself a Jew and (O)rely on the law and boast in God 18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; 19 and if you are sure that you yourself are (P)a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law (Q)the embodiment of (R)knowledge and truth— 21 (S)you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you (T)rob temples? 23 You who (U)boast in the law (V)dishonor God by breaking the law. 24 For, (W)as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed (X)among the Gentiles because of you.”

25 For circumcision indeed is of value (Y)if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 26 So, if (Z)a man who is uncircumcised keeps (AA)the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded[b] as circumcision? 27 Then he who is physically[c] uncircumcised but keeps the law (AB)will condemn you who have (AC)the written code[d] and circumcision but break the law. 28 For (AD)no one is a Jew (AE)who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29 But a Jew is one (AF)inwardly, and (AG)circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. (AH)His praise is not from man but from God.

God's Righteousness Upheld

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, (AI)the Jews were entrusted with (AJ)the oracles of God. (AK)What if some were unfaithful? (AL)Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! (AM)Let God be true though (AN)every one were a liar, as it is written,

(AO)“That you may be justified in your words,
    and prevail when you (AP)are judged.”

But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict (AQ)wrath on us? ((AR)I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could (AS)God judge the world? But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, (AT)why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not (AU)do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

No One Is Righteous

What then? Are we Jews[e] any better off?[f] No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both (AV)Jews and (AW)Greeks, are (AX)under sin, 10 as it is written:

(AY)“None is righteous, no, not one;
11     no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.”
13 (AZ)“Their throat is (BA)an open grave;
    they use their tongues to deceive.”
(BB)“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
14     (BC)“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 (BD)“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16     in their paths are ruin and misery,
17 and (BE)the way of peace they have not known.”
18     (BF)“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever (BG)the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, (BH)so that every mouth may be stopped, and (BI)the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For (BJ)by works of the law no human being[g] will be justified in his sight, since (BK)through the law comes knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God Through Faith

21 But now (BL)the righteousness of God (BM)has been manifested apart from the law, although (BN)the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God (BO)through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. (BP)For there is no distinction: 23 for (BQ)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 (BR)and are justified (BS)by his grace as a gift, (BT)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God (BU)put forward as (BV)a propitiation (BW)by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in (BX)his divine forbearance he had passed over (BY)former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

27 (BZ)Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith (CA)apart from works of the law. 29 Or (CB)is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since (CC)God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and (CD)the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, (CE)our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but (CF)not before God. For what does the Scripture say? (CG)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now (CH)to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but (CI)believes in[h] him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

(CJ)“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
    and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not (CK)count his sin.”

Is this blessing then only for (CL)the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? (CM)For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 (CN)He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was (CO)to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12 and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

The Promise Realized Through Faith

13 For (CP)the promise to Abraham and his offspring (CQ)that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 (CR)For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For (CS)the law brings wrath, but (CT)where there is no law (CU)there is no transgression.

16 That is why it depends on faith, (CV)in order that the promise may rest on grace and (CW)be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, (CX)who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, (CY)“I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, (CZ)who gives life to the dead and calls into existence (DA)the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, (DB)“So shall your offspring be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was (DC)as good as dead ((DD)since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered (DE)the barrenness[i] of Sarah's womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that (DF)God was able to do what he had promised. 22 That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” 23 But (DG)the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us (DH)who believe in (DI)him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 (DJ)who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised (DK)for our justification.

Peace with God Through Faith

(DL)Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, (DM)we[j] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also (DN)obtained access by faith[k] into this grace (DO)in which we stand, and (DP)we[l] rejoice[m] in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we (DQ)rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering (DR)produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and (DS)hope does not put us to shame, because God's love (DT)has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

For (DU)while we were still weak, at the right time (DV)Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but (DW)God shows his love for us in that (DX)while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, (DY)we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from (DZ)the wrath of God. 10 For if (EA)while we were enemies (EB)we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by (EC)his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (ED)reconciliation.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12 Therefore, just as (EE)sin came into the world through one man, and (EF)death through sin, and (EG)so death spread to all men[n] because (EH)all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but (EI)sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not (EJ)like the transgression of Adam, (EK)who was a type of (EL)the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for (EM)many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For (EN)the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought (EO)justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness (EP)reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass[o] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[p] leads to justification and life for (EQ)all men. 19 For as by the one man's (ER)disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's (ES)obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now (ET)the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, (EU)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, (EV)as sin reigned in death, (EW)grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? (EX)Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can (EY)we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us (EZ)who have been baptized (FA)into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were (FB)buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as (FC)Christ was raised from the dead by (FD)the glory of the Father, we too might walk in (FE)newness of life.

For (FF)if we have been united with him in (FG)a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that (FH)our old self[q] (FI)was crucified with him in order that (FJ)the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For (FK)one who has died (FL)has been set free[r] from sin. Now (FM)if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that (FN)Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; (FO)death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, (FP)once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves (FQ)dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not (FR)sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 (FS)Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but (FT)present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For (FU)sin (FV)will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,(A) there will be wrath and anger.(B) There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil:(C) first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;(D) 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.(E) 11 For God does not show favoritism.(F)

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law(G) will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey(H) the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law,(I) they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets(J) through Jesus Christ,(K) as my gospel(L) declares.

The Jews and the Law

17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God;(M) 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?(N) 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?(O) 23 You who boast in the law,(P) do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”[a](Q)

25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law,(R) but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.(S) 26 So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements,(T) will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised?(U) 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you(V) who, even though you have the[b] written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.

28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly,(W) nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.(X) 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart,(Y) by the Spirit,(Z) not by the written code.(AA) Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.(AB)

God’s Faithfulness

What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way!(AC) First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.(AD)

What if some were unfaithful?(AE) Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?(AF) Not at all! Let God be true,(AG) and every human being a liar.(AH) As it is written:

“So that you may be proved right when you speak
    and prevail when you judge.”[c](AI)

But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly,(AJ) what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.)(AK) Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?(AL) Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory,(AM) why am I still condemned as a sinner?”(AN) Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”?(AO) Their condemnation is just!

No One Is Righteous

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage?(AP) Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.(AQ) 10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;
11     there is no one who understands;
    there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
    they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    not even one.”[d](AR)
13 “Their throats are open graves;
    their tongues practice deceit.”[e](AS)
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”[f](AT)
14     “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”[g](AU)
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16     ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know.”[h](AV)
18     “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[i](AW)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says,(AX) it says to those who are under the law,(AY) so that every mouth may be silenced(AZ) and the whole world held accountable to God.(BA) 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;(BB) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.(BC)

Righteousness Through Faith

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God(BD) has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.(BE) 22 This righteousness(BF) is given through faith(BG) in[j] Jesus Christ(BH) to all who believe.(BI) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,(BJ) 23 for all have sinned(BK) and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified(BL) freely by his grace(BM) through the redemption(BN) that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[k](BO) through the shedding of his blood(BP)—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished(BQ) 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

27 Where, then, is boasting?(BR) It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.(BS) 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,(BT) 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.(BU) 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say(BV) that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh,(BW) discovered in this matter? If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.(BX) What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[l](BY)

Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift(BZ) but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.(CA) David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”[m](CB)

Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised?(CC) We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.(CD) 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised.(CE) So then, he is the father(CF) of all who believe(CG) but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12 And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise(CH) that he would be heir of the world,(CI) but through the righteousness that comes by faith.(CJ) 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless,(CK) 15 because the law brings wrath.(CL) And where there is no law there is no transgression.(CM)

16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace(CN) and may be guaranteed(CO) to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.(CP) 17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”[n](CQ) He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life(CR) to the dead and calls(CS) into being things that were not.(CT)

18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations,(CU) just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”[o](CV) 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead(CW)—since he was about a hundred years old(CX)—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.(CY) 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened(CZ) in his faith and gave glory to God,(DA) 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.(DB) 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”(DC) 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us,(DD) to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him(DE) who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.(DF) 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins(DG) and was raised to life for our justification.(DH)

Peace and Hope

Therefore, since we have been justified(DI) through faith,(DJ) we[p] have peace(DK) with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,(DL) through whom we have gained access(DM) by faith into this grace in which we now stand.(DN) And we[q] boast in the hope(DO) of the glory of God. Not only so, but we[r] also glory in our sufferings,(DP) because we know that suffering produces perseverance;(DQ) perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope(DR) does not put us to shame, because God’s love(DS) has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit,(DT) who has been given to us.

You see, at just the right time,(DU) when we were still powerless,(DV) Christ died for the ungodly.(DW) Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.(DX)

Since we have now been justified(DY) by his blood,(DZ) how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath(EA) through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies,(EB) we were reconciled(EC) to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!(ED) 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.(EE)

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(EF) and death through sin,(EG) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned(EH)

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.(EI) 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam,(EJ) who is a pattern of the one to come.(EK)

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,(EL) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ,(EM) overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death(EN) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life(EO) through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,(EP) so also one righteous act resulted in justification(EQ) and life(ER) for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man(ES) the many were made sinners,(ET) so also through the obedience(EU) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.(EV) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,(EW) 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(EX) so also grace(EY) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life(EZ) through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

What shall we say, then?(FA) Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?(FB) By no means! We are those who have died to sin;(FC) how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized(FD) into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death(FE) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead(FF) through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.(FG)

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.(FH) For we know that our old self(FI) was crucified with him(FJ) so that the body ruled by sin(FK) might be done away with,[s] that we should no longer be slaves to sin(FL) because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.(FM)

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.(FN) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,(FO) he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.(FP) 10 The death he died, he died to sin(FQ) once for all;(FR) but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin(FS) but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign(FT) in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness,(FU) but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.(FV) 14 For sin shall no longer be your master,(FW) because you are not under the law,(FX) but under grace.(FY)
