We should think of their good and try to help them by doing what pleases them. (A) Even Christ did not try to please himself. But as the Scriptures say, “The people who insulted you also insulted me.” (B) And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope.

Each of us should please our neighbors for their good,(A) to build them up.(B) For even Christ did not please himself(C) but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”[a](D) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,(E) so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
