14 The Lord Jesus has made it clear to me that God considers all foods fit to eat. But if you think some foods are unfit to eat, then for you they are not fit.

15 If you are hurting others by the foods you eat, you are not guided by love. Don't let your appetite destroy someone Christ died for. 16 Don't let your right to eat bring shame to Christ. 17 God's kingdom isn't about eating and drinking. It is about pleasing God, about living in peace, and about true happiness. All this comes from the Holy Spirit. 18 If you serve Christ in this way, you will please God and be respected by people. 19 We should try[a] to live at peace and help each other have a strong faith.

20 Don't let your appetite destroy what God has done. All foods are fit to eat, but it is wrong to cause problems for others by what you eat. 21 It is best not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else that causes problems for other followers of the Lord. 22 What you believe about these things should be kept between you and God. You are fortunate, if your actions don't make you have doubts. 23 But if you do have doubts about what you eat, you are going against your beliefs. And you know that is wrong, because anything you do against your beliefs is sin.

Please Others and Not Yourself

15 If our faith is strong, we should be patient with the Lord's followers whose faith is weak. We should try to please them instead of ourselves. We should think of their good and try to help them by doing what pleases them. (A) Even Christ did not try to please himself. But as the Scriptures say, “The people who insulted you also insulted me.” (B) And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope. God is the one who makes us patient and cheerful. I pray that he will help you live at peace with each other, as you follow Christ. Then all of you together will praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Good News Is for Jews and Gentiles

Honor God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you. I tell you that Christ came as a servant of the Jews to show that God has kept the promises he made to their famous ancestors. Christ also came, (C) so that the Gentiles would praise God for being kind to them. It is just as the Scriptures say,

“I will tell the nations
    about you,
and I will sing praises
    to your name.”

10 (D) The Scriptures also say to the Gentiles, “Come and celebrate with God's people.”

11 (E) Again the Scriptures say,

“Praise the Lord,
    all you Gentiles.
All you nations, come
    and worship him.”

12 (F) Isaiah says,

“Someone from David's family
    will come to power.
He will rule the nations,
and they will put their hope
    in him.”

13 I pray that God, who gives hope, will bless you with complete happiness and peace because of your faith. And may the power of the Holy Spirit fill you with hope.

Footnotes

  1. 14.19 We should try: Some manuscripts have “We try.”

14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself.(A) But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.(B) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.(C) Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.(D) 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.(E) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking,(F) but of righteousness, peace(G) and joy in the Holy Spirit,(H) 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.(I)

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace(J) and to mutual edification.(K) 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.(L) All food is clean,(M) but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.(N) 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.(O)

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn(P) himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts(Q) is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[a]

15 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak(R) and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good,(S) to build them up.(T) For even Christ did not please himself(U) but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”[b](V) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,(W) so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind(X) toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify(Y) the God and Father(Z) of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Accept one another,(AA) then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews[c](AB) on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises(AC) made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and, moreover, that the Gentiles(AD) might glorify God(AE) for his mercy. As it is written:

“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
    I will sing the praises of your name.”[d](AF)

10 Again, it says,

“Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”[e](AG)

11 And again,

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles;
    let all the peoples extol him.”[f](AH)

12 And again, Isaiah says,

“The Root of Jesse(AI) will spring up,
    one who will arise to rule over the nations;
    in him the Gentiles will hope.”[g](AJ)

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace(AK) as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.(AL)
