Romans 14:10-15:7
New Living Translation

10 So why do you condemn another believer[a]? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For the Scriptures say,

“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bend to me,
    and every tongue will declare allegiance to God.[b]’”

12 Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. 13 So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

14 I know and am convinced on the authority of the Lord Jesus that no food, in and of itself, is wrong to eat. But if someone believes it is wrong, then for that person it is wrong. 15 And if another believer is distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you eat it. Don’t let your eating ruin someone for whom Christ died. 16 Then you will not be criticized for doing something you believe is good. 17 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. 19 So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

20 Don’t tear apart the work of God over what you eat. Remember, all foods are acceptable, but it is wrong to eat something if it makes another person stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble.[c] 22 You may believe there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right. 23 But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.[d]

Living to Please Others

15 We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves. 2 We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord. 3 For even Christ didn’t live to please himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.”[e] 4 Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.

5 May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. 6 Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[a]? Or why do you treat them with contempt?(A) For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.(B) 11 It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’(C) says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
    every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[b](D)

12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.(E)

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment(F) on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.(G) 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself.(H) But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.(I) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.(J) Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.(K) 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.(L) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking,(M) but of righteousness, peace(N) and joy in the Holy Spirit,(O) 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.(P)

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace(Q) and to mutual edification.(R) 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.(S) All food is clean,(T) but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.(U) 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.(V)

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn(W) himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts(X) is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[c]

15 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak(Y) and not to please ourselves. 2 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good,(Z) to build them up.(AA) 3 For even Christ did not please himself(AB) but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”[d](AC) 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,(AD) so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind(AE) toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify(AF) the God and Father(AG) of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 Accept one another,(AH) then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
