The Power of the Gospel
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is God’s saving power for everyone who believes,[a] for the Jew first and also for the Greek.(A) 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith, as it is written, “The one who is righteous will live by faith.”[b](B)
The Guilt of Humankind
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and injustice of those who by their injustice suppress the truth.(C) 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 Ever since the creation of the world God’s eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been seen and understood through the things God has made. So they are without excuse,(D) 21 for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless hearts were darkened.(E) 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.(F)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,(A) because it is the power of God(B) that brings salvation to everyone who believes:(C) first to the Jew,(D) then to the Gentile.(E) 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed(F)—a righteousness that is by faith(G) from first to last,[a] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[b](H)
God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity
18 The wrath of God(I) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.(J) 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,(K) so that people are without excuse.(L)
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.(M) 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools(N) 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images(O) made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

22 the righteousness of God through the faith of Jesus Christ[a] for all who believe.[b] For there is no distinction,(A) 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;(B) 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,(C) 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement[c] by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed;(D) 26 it was to demonstrate at the present time his own righteousness, so that he is righteous and he justifies the one who has the faith of Jesus.[d]
27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. Through what kind of law? That of works? No, rather through the law of faith.(E) 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.(F)

22 This righteousness(A) is given through faith(B) in[a] Jesus Christ(C) to all who believe.(D) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,(E) 23 for all have sinned(F) and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified(G) freely by his grace(H) through the redemption(I) that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[b](J) through the shedding of his blood(K)—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished(L)— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
27 Where, then, is boasting?(M) It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.(N)
