Mientras vivíamos sometidos a nuestras desordenadas apetencias humanas, éramos terreno abonado para que nuestras bajas pasiones, activadas por la ley, produjeran frutos de muerte. Ahora, en cambio, muertos a la ley que nos tenía bajo su yugo, hemos quedado liberados de ella y podemos servir a Dios, no según la letra de la vieja ley, sino conforme a la nueva vida del Espíritu.

La ley y el pecado

¿Querrá todo esto decir que la ley es pecado? ¡De ningún modo! Claro que, sin la ley, yo no habría experimentado el pecado. Por ejemplo, yo ignoraba lo que es tener malos deseos, hasta que vino la ley y dijo: No tengas malos deseos.

For when we were in the flesh, sinful desires were working through the law in our members, to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the law, because we[a] have died to that by which we were bound, so that we may serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter of the law.

Knowledge of Sin Comes through the Law

What then shall we say? Is the law sin? May it never be! But I would not have known sin except through the law, for I would not have known covetousness if the law had not said, “Do not covet.”[b]
