Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? (A)Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who (B)died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that (C)as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus (D)were baptized into His death? Therefore we were (E)buried with Him through baptism into death, that (F)just as Christ was raised from the dead by (G)the glory of the Father, (H)even so we also should walk in newness of life.

(I)For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that (J)our old man was crucified with Him, that (K)the body of sin might be [a]done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For (L)he who has died has been [b]freed from sin. Now (M)if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that (N)Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, (O)He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, (P)He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, [c]reckon yourselves to be (Q)dead indeed to sin, but (R)alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12 (S)Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your (T)members as [d]instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but (U)present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For (V)sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

From Slaves of Sin to Slaves of God

15 What then? Shall we sin (W)because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that (X)to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart (Y)that form of doctrine to which you were [e]delivered. 18 And (Z)having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness [f]for holiness.

20 For when you were (AA)slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 (AB)What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For (AC)the end of those things is death. 22 But now (AD)having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit [g]to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For (AE)the wages of sin is death, but (AF)the [h]gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Believer’s Freedom from Sin’s Domination

What shall we say then? Are we to remain in sin so that grace may increase? Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.[a]

For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his resurrection.[b] We know that[c] our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us,[d] so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (For someone who has died has been freed from sin.)[e]

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know[f] that since Christ has been raised from the dead, he is never going to die[g] again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 For the death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So you too consider yourselves[h] dead to sin, but[i] alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires, 13 and do not present your members to sin as instruments[j] to be used for unrighteousness,[k] but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead and your members to God as instruments[l] to be used for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law but under grace.

The Believer’s Enslavement to God’s Righteousness

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves[m] as obedient slaves,[n] you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or obedience resulting in righteousness?[o] 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed[p] from the heart that pattern[q] of teaching you were entrusted to, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. 19 (I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.)[r] For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.

21 So what benefit[s] did you then reap[t] from those things that you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now, freed[u] from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit[v] leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. 23 For the payoff[w] of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Moglibyśmy zapytać: Czy więc mamy pozostać w grzechu, by tym bardziej pomnożyć łaskę? W żadnym razie! W jaki sposób my, którzy umarliśmy dla grzechu, mamy nadal w nim żyć? Czy nie wiecie, że my wszyscy, ochrzczeni w Chrystusa Jezusa, zostaliśmy zanurzeni w Jego śmierć? A zatem za sprawą chrztu zostaliśmy pogrzebani wraz z Nim w śmierć, abyśmy wzorem Chrystusa, który został wzbudzony z martwych przez chwałę Ojca, my również prowadzili nowe życie.

Oddawajcie siebie raczej Bogu, jako ożywieni z martwych. Jemu oddawajcie swe członki, niech służą za oręż sprawiedliwości. 14 Grzech bowiem nie będzie nad wami panował, gdyż nie jesteście już pod Prawem, lecz pod łaską.

Współukrzyżowanie w praktyce

15 Cóż zatem? Czy mamy grzeszyć, dlatego, że nie jesteśmy już pod Prawem, lecz pod łaską? W żadnym razie! 16 Czy nie wiecie, że jeśli posłusznie oddajecie się w niewolę, to stajecie się niewolnikami tego, kto przejmuje nad wami władzę? Jeśli to będzie grzech, to skutkiem będzie śmierć. Jeśli posłuszeństwo — to końcem sprawiedliwość. 17 Lecz Bogu niech będą dzięki, że gdy jeszcze byliście niewolnikami grzechu, całym sercem poszliście za tego rodzaju nauką, z którą was też zapoznano, 18 i wyzwoleni od grzechu, staliście się niewolnikami sprawiedliwości.

19 Pozwólcie, że użyję przykładu z życia, ze względu na słabość waszego ciała. Otóż jak oddawaliście wasze członki w niewolę nieczystości i bezprawia dla jego popełniania, tak teraz oddawajcie wasze członki w niewolę sprawiedliwości — dla uświęcenia.

20 Bo gdy służyliście w niewoli grzechu, byliście wolni od sprawiedliwości. 21 I jakie wówczas mieliście korzyści? Takie, których się teraz wstydzicie, a których końcem jest śmierć. 22 Teraz natomiast, wyzwoleni od grzechu, a oddani w niewolę Bogu, macie korzyść służącą uświęceniu, a końcem jest życie wieczne. 23 Gdyż zapłatą za grzech jest śmierć, lecz darem Bożej łaski jest życie wieczne w Chrystusie Jezusie, naszym Panu.
