13 Sométase toda persona a las autoridades superiores; porque no hay autoridad sino de parte de Dios, y las que hay, por Dios han sido establecidas. 2 De modo que quien se opone a la autoridad, a lo establecido por Dios resiste; y los que resisten, acarrean condenación para sí mismos. 3 Porque los magistrados no están para infundir temor al que hace el bien, sino al malo. ¿Quieres, pues, no temer la autoridad? Haz lo bueno, y tendrás alabanza de ella; 4 porque es servidor de Dios para tu bien. Pero si haces lo malo, teme; porque no en vano lleva la espada, pues es servidor de Dios, vengador para castigar al que hace lo malo. 5 Por lo cual es necesario estarle sujetos, no solamente por razón del castigo, sino también por causa de la conciencia. 6 Pues por esto pagáis también los tributos, porque son servidores de Dios que atienden continuamente a esto mismo. 7 Pagad a todos lo que debéis: al que tributo, tributo; al que impuesto, impuesto; al que respeto, respeto; al que honra, honra.(A)
8 No debáis a nadie nada, sino el amaros unos a otros; porque el que ama al prójimo, ha cumplido la ley. 9 Porque: No adulterarás,(B) no matarás,(C) no hurtarás,(D) no dirás falso testimonio,(E) no codiciarás,(F) y cualquier otro mandamiento, en esta sentencia se resume: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.(G) 10 El amor no hace mal al prójimo; así que el cumplimiento de la ley es el amor.
11 Y esto, conociendo el tiempo, que es ya hora de levantarnos del sueño; porque ahora está más cerca de nosotros nuestra salvación que cuando creímos. 12 La noche está avanzada, y se acerca el día. Desechemos, pues, las obras de las tinieblas, y vistámonos las armas de la luz. 13 Andemos como de día, honestamente; no en glotonerías y borracheras, no en lujurias y lascivias, no en contiendas y envidia, 14 sino vestíos del Señor Jesucristo, y no proveáis para los deseos de la carne.

El respeto a las autoridades
13 Todos deben someterse a las autoridades públicas, pues no hay autoridad que Dios no haya dispuesto, así que las que existen fueron establecidas por él. 2 Por lo tanto, todo el que se opone a la autoridad se rebela contra lo que Dios ha instituido. Los que así proceden recibirán castigo. 3 Porque los gobernantes no están para infundir terror a los que hacen lo bueno, sino a los que hacen lo malo. ¿Quieres librarte del miedo a la autoridad? Haz lo bueno y tendrás su aprobación, 4 pues está al servicio de Dios para tu bien. Pero si haces lo malo, entonces debes tener miedo. No en vano lleva la espada, pues está al servicio de Dios para impartir justicia y castigar al malhechor. 5 Así que es necesario someterse a las autoridades no solo para evitar el castigo, sino también por razones de conciencia.
6 Por eso mismo pagan ustedes impuestos, pues las autoridades están al servicio de Dios, dedicadas precisamente a gobernar. 7 Paguen a cada uno lo que corresponda: si deben impuestos, paguen los impuestos; si deben contribuciones, paguen las contribuciones; al que deban respeto, muéstrenle respeto; al que deban honor, ríndanle honor.
La responsabilidad hacia los demás
8 No tengan deudas pendientes con nadie a no ser la de amarse unos a otros. De hecho, quien ama al prójimo ha cumplido la Ley. 9 Porque los mandamientos que dicen: «No cometas adulterio», «no mates», «no robes», «no codicies»,[a] y todos los demás mandamientos, se resumen en este precepto: «Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo».[b] 10 El amor no perjudica al prójimo. Así que el amor es el cumplimiento de la Ley.
11 Hagan todo esto estando conscientes del tiempo en que vivimos. Ya es hora de que despierten del sueño, pues nuestra salvación está ahora más cerca que cuando inicialmente creímos. 12 La noche está muy avanzada y ya se acerca el día. Por eso, dejemos a un lado las obras de la oscuridad y pongámonos la armadura de la luz. 13 Vivamos decentemente, como a la luz del día, no en orgías y borracheras, ni en inmoralidad sexual y libertinaje, ni en desacuerdos y envidias. 14 Más bien, revístanse ustedes del Señor Jesucristo y no se preocupen por satisfacer los deseos de la carne.

13 1 He willeth that we submit ourselves to Magistrates: 8 To love our neighbor: 13 To love uprightly, 14 and to put on Christ.
1 Let (A)[a]every [b]soul be subject unto the higher [c]powers: [d]for there is no power but of God: and the powers that be, are [e]ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist, shall receive to themselves condemnation.
3 [f]For Magistrates are not to be feared for good works, but for evil. [g]Wilt thou then be without fear of the power? do well: so shalt thou have praise of the same.
4 For he is the minister of God for thy wealth: [h]but if thou do evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword for nought: for he is the minister of God to [i]take vengeance on him that doeth evil.
5 [j]Wherefore ye must be subject, not because of wrath only, but [k]also for conscience sake.
6 [l]For, for this cause ye pay also tribute: for they are God’s ministers, applying themselves for the same thing.
7 (B)Give to all men therefore their duty: tribute, to whom ye owe tribute: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom [m]fear: honor, to whom ye owe [n]honor.
8 [o]Owe nothing to any man, but to love one another: [p]for he that loveth another, hath fulfilled the [q]Law.
9 For this, (C)Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is [r]briefly comprehended in this saying, even in this, (D)Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
10 Love doeth not evil to his neighbor: therefore is love the (E)fulfilling of the Law.
11 [s]And that, considering the season, that it is now time that we should arise from sleep: for now is our salvation nearer, than when we believed it.
12 The night is past, and the day is [t]at hand, let us therefore cast away the works [u]of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light,
13 So that we walk honestly, as in the day: not in (F)gluttony, and drunkenness, neither in chambering and wantonness, nor in strife and envying.
14 (G)But [v]put ye on the Lord JESUS CHRIST, and take no thought for the flesh, to fulfill the lust of it.
