14 Primiţi-i bine între voi pe cei care sunt slabi în credinţă[a], fără a purta dispute! 2 Unul crede că poate să mănânce orice, pe când cel slab mănâncă doar legume.[b] 3 Cel ce mănâncă orice să nu-l dispreţuiască pe cel ce nu mănâncă orice, iar cel ce nu mănâncă orice să nu-l condamne pe cel ce mănâncă, pentru că Dumnezeu l-a primit. 4 Cine eşti tu să-l condamni pe slujitorul altuia?! Dacă stă sau cade, îl priveşte pe stăpânul său! Însă el va sta, pentru că Domnul îl poate face să stea. 5 Unul crede că o zi este mai bună decât alta, iar altul le consideră pe toate la fel. Fiecare trebuie să fie pe deplin convins în gândirea sa. 6 Cel ce respectă o anumită zi, pentru Domnul o respectă. Cel ce mănâncă orice, pentru Domnul mănâncă, întrucât el Îi mulţumeşte lui Dumnezeu, iar cel ce nu mănâncă orice, pentru Domnul nu mănâncă şi Îi mulţumeşte şi el lui Dumnezeu. 7 Căci nimeni dintre noi nu trăieşte pentru el însuşi şi nimeni dintre noi nu moare pentru el însuşi: 8 dacă trăim, pentru Domnul trăim, iar dacă murim, pentru Domnul murim. Astfel, fie că trăim, fie că murim, noi suntem ai Domnului. 9 Pentru acest scop a murit şi a înviat Cristos: ca să poată fi Domn şi al celor morţi, şi al celor vii. 10 Aşadar, de ce-l condamni pe fratele tău? Sau de ce-l dispreţuieşti pe fratele tău?[c] Căci toţi vom sta înaintea tronului de judecată al lui Dumnezeu. 11 Pentru că este scris:
„Viu sunt Eu, zice Domnul, că orice genunchi se va pleca înaintea Mea
şi orice limbă Îl va mărturisi pe Dumnezeu!“[d]
12 Deci fiecare dintre noi va da socoteală despre sine însuşi înaintea lui Dumnezeu.
13 Aşadar, să nu ne mai judecăm unii pe alţii, ci, mai degrabă, judecaţi ca nu cumva să puneţi fratelui vostru o piatră de poticnire sau o pricină de cădere. 14 Ştiu şi sunt convins în Domnul Isus că nici un lucru nu este necurat în sine, însă dacă cineva consideră un lucru ca fiind necurat, atunci pentru el este necurat. 15 Dacă fratele tău este întristat din cauza a ceea ce mănânci, atunci tu nu mai trăieşti în dragoste. Nu-l nimici, prin ceea ce mănânci, pe cel pentru care a murit Cristos! 16 Nu lăsaţi ca binele vostru să fie vorbit de rău! 17 Căci Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu nu este nici mâncare, nici băutură, ci dreptate, pace şi bucurie în Duhul Sfânt. 18 Cel care-L slujeşte astfel pe Cristos Îi este plăcut lui Dumnezeu şi este respectat de oameni. 19 Aşadar, să urmărim lucrurile care aduc pacea şi cele prin care ne zidim unii pe alţii! 20 Nu distrugeţi lucrarea lui Dumnezeu de dragul unei mâncări! Într-adevăr, toate lucrurile sunt curate, însă este rău pentru un om să mănânce ceva care pe celălalt l-ar face să cadă. 21 Este bine să nu mănânci carne sau să nu bei vin sau orice altceva care pe fratele tău l-ar face să cadă. 22 Aşadar, încredinţarea pe care o ai, păstreaz-o pentru tine înaintea lui Dumnezeu. Ferice de omul care nu se condamnă din cauza a ceea ce el consideră ca fiind bun! 23 Însă omul care are îndoieli este condamnat dacă mănâncă, pentru că n-o face din convingere[e]. Orice lucru care nu vine din convingere este păcat.

14 Receive(A) one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. 2 For one believes he (B)may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and (C)let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. 4 (D)Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.
5 (E)One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 He who (F)observes the day, observes it to the Lord; [a]and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for (G)he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. 7 For (H)none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 8 For if we (I)live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For (J)to this end Christ died [b]and rose and lived again, that He might be (K)Lord of both the dead and the living. 10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For (L)we shall all stand before the judgment seat of [c]Christ. 11 For it is written:

12 So then (N)each of us shall give account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not judge one another [d]anymore, but rather resolve this, (O)not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.
The Law of Love
14 I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus (P)that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. (Q)Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. 16 (R)Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; 17 (S)for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and (T)peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who serves Christ in [e]these things (U)is acceptable to God and approved by men.
19 (V)Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which (W)one may [f]edify another. 20 (X)Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. (Y)All things indeed are pure, (Z)but it is evil for the man who eats with [g]offense. 21 It is good neither to eat (AA)meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles [h]or is offended or is made weak. 22 [i]Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. (AB)Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for (AC)whatever is not from faith is [j]sin.

Chapter 14
To Live and Die for Christ. 1 [a]Welcome anyone who is weak in faith,(A) but not for disputes over opinions.(B) 2 One person believes that one may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables.(C) 3 The one who eats must not despise the one who abstains, and the one who abstains must not pass judgment on the one who eats; for God has welcomed him.(D) 4 Who are you to pass judgment on someone else’s servant? Before his own master he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.(E) 5 [For] one person considers one day more important than another, while another person considers all days alike.(F) Let everyone be fully persuaded in his own mind.[b] 6 Whoever observes the day, observes it for the Lord. Also whoever eats, eats for the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; while whoever abstains, abstains for the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. 8 For if we live, we live for the Lord,[c] and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.(G) 9 For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.(H) 10 Why then do you judge your brother? Consideration for the Weak Conscience. 13 Then let us no longer judge one another, but rather resolve never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.(L) 14 I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; still, it is unclean for someone who thinks it unclean.(M) 15 If your brother is being hurt by what you eat, your conduct is no longer in accord with love. Do not because of your food destroy him for whom Christ died.(N) 16 So do not let your good be reviled.(O) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of food and drink, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the holy Spirit;(P) 18 whoever serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by others. 19 Let us[d] then pursue what leads to peace and to building up one another.(Q) 20 For the sake of food, do not destroy the work of God.(R) Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to become a stumbling block by eating; 21 it is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 Keep the faith [that] you have to yourself in the presence of God; blessed is the one who does not condemn himself for what he approves. 23 (S)But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because this is not from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.[e]

- 14:1–15:6 Since Christ spells termination of the law, which included observance of specific days and festivals as well as dietary instruction, the jettisoning of long-practiced customs was traumatic for many Christians brought up under the Mosaic code. Although Paul acknowledges that in principle no food is a source of moral contamination (Rom 14:14), he recommends that the consciences of Christians who are scrupulous in this regard be respected by other Christians (Rom 14:21). On the other hand, those who have scruples are not to sit in judgment on those who know that the gospel has liberated them from such ordinances (Rom 14:10). See 1 Cor 8; 10.
- 14:5 Since the problem to be overcome was humanity’s perverted mind or judgment (Rom 1:28), Paul indicates that the mind of the Christian is now able to function with appropriate discrimination (cf. Rom 12:2).
- 14:8 The Lord: Jesus, our Master. The same Greek word, kyrios, was applied to both rulers and holders of slaves. Throughout the Letter to the Romans Paul emphasizes God’s total claim on the believer; see note on Rom 1:1.
- 14:19 Some manuscripts, versions, and church Fathers read, “We then pursue…”; cf. Rom 5:1.
- 14:23 Whatever is not from faith is sin: Paul does not mean that all the actions of unbelievers are sinful. He addresses himself to the question of intracommunity living. Sin in the singular is the dreadful power described in Rom 5:12–14.

The Weak and the Strong
14 Accept the one whose faith is weak,(A) without quarreling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.(B) 3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt(C) the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge(D) the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?(E) To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.
5 One person considers one day more sacred than another;(F) another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6 Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God;(G) and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives for ourselves alone,(H) and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.(I) 9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life(J) so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.(K)
10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[a]? Or why do you treat them with contempt?(L) For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.(M) 11 It is written:

Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.(R) 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself.(S) But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.(T) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.(U) Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.(V) 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.(W) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking,(X) but of righteousness, peace(Y) and joy in the Holy Spirit,(Z) 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.(AA)

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.
