1 Paolo, servo di Cristo Gesù, apostolo per vocazione, prescelto per annunziare il vangelo di Dio, 2 che egli aveva promesso per mezzo dei suoi profeti nelle sacre Scritture, 3 riguardo al Figlio suo, nato dalla stirpe di Davide secondo la carne, 4 costituito Figlio di Dio con potenza secondo lo Spirito di santificazione mediante la risurrezione dai morti, Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore. 5 Per mezzo di lui abbiamo ricevuto la grazia dell'apostolato per ottenere l'obbedienza alla fede da parte di tutte le genti, a gloria del suo nome; 6 e tra queste siete anche voi, chiamati da Gesù Cristo. 7 A quanti sono in Roma diletti da Dio e santi per vocazione, grazia a voi e pace da Dio, Padre nostro, e dal Signore Gesù Cristo.
Ringraziamento e preghiera
8 Anzitutto rendo grazie al mio Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo riguardo a tutti voi, perché la fama della vostra fede si espande in tutto il mondo. 9 Quel Dio, al quale rendo culto nel mio spirito annunziando il vangelo del Figlio suo, mi è testimone che io mi ricordo sempre di voi, 10 chiedendo sempre nelle mie preghiere che per volontà di Dio mi si apra una strada per venire fino a voi. 11 Ho infatti un vivo desiderio di vedervi per comunicarvi qualche dono spirituale perché ne siate fortificati, 12 o meglio, per rinfrancarmi con voi e tra voi mediante la fede che abbiamo in comune, voi e io. 13 Non voglio pertanto che ignoriate, fratelli, che più volte mi sono proposto di venire fino a voi - ma finora ne sono stato impedito - per raccogliere qualche frutto anche tra voi, come tra gli altri Gentili. 14 Poiché sono in debito verso i Greci come verso i barbari, verso i dotti come verso gli ignoranti: 15 sono quindi pronto, per quanto sta in me, a predicare il vangelo anche a voi di Roma.
LA SALVEZZA MEDIANTE LA FEDE
1. LA GIUSTIFICAZIONE
Enunciazione della tesi
16 Io infatti non mi vergogno del vangelo, poiché è potenza di Dio per la salvezza di chiunque crede, del Giudeo prima e poi del Greco. 17 E' in esso che si rivela la giustizia di Dio di fede in fede, come sta scritto: Il giusto vivrà mediante la fede.

18 In realtà l'ira di Dio si rivela dal cielo contro ogni empietà e ogni ingiustizia di uomini che soffocano la verità nell'ingiustizia, 19 poiché ciò che di Dio si può conoscere è loro manifesto; Dio stesso lo ha loro manifestato. 20 Infatti, dalla creazione del mondo in poi, le sue perfezioni invisibili possono essere contemplate con l'intelletto nelle opere da lui compiute, come la sua eterna potenza e divinità; 21 essi sono dunque inescusabili, perché, pur conoscendo Dio, non gli hanno dato gloria né gli hanno reso grazie come a Dio, ma hanno vaneggiato nei loro ragionamenti e si è ottenebrata la loro mente ottusa. 22 Mentre si dichiaravano sapienti, sono diventati stolti 23 e hanno cambiato la gloria dell'incorruttibile Dio con l'immagine e la figura dell'uomo corruttibile, di uccelli, di quadrupedi e di rettili.
24 Perciò Dio li ha abbandonati all'impurità secondo i desideri del loro cuore, sì da disonorare fra di loro i propri corpi, 25 poiché essi hanno cambiato la verità di Dio con la menzogna e hanno venerato e adorato la creatura al posto del creatore, che è benedetto nei secoli. Amen.
26 Per questo Dio li ha abbandonati a passioni infami; le loro donne hanno cambiato i rapporti naturali in rapporti contro natura. 27 Egualmente anche gli uomini, lasciando il rapporto naturale con la donna, si sono accesi di passione gli uni per gli altri, commettendo atti ignominiosi uomini con uomini, ricevendo così in se stessi la punizione che s'addiceva al loro traviamento. 28 E poiché hanno disprezzato la conoscenza di Dio, Dio li ha abbandonati in balìa d'una intelligenza depravata, sicché commettono ciò che è indegno, 29 colmi come sono di ogni sorta di ingiustizia, di malvagità, di cupidigia, di malizia; pieni d'invidia, di omicidio, di rivalità, di frodi, di malignità; diffamatori, 30 maldicenti, nemici di Dio, oltraggiosi, superbi, fanfaroni, ingegnosi nel male, ribelli ai genitori, 31 insensati, sleali, senza cuore, senza misericordia. 32 E pur conoscendo il giudizio di Dio, che cioè gli autori di tali cose meritano la morte, non solo continuano a farle, ma anche approvano chi le fa.

1 From: Sha’ul, a slave of the Messiah Yeshua, an emissary because I was called and set apart for the Good News of God.
2 God promised this Good News in advance through his prophets in the Tanakh. 3 It concerns his Son — he is descended from David physically; 4 he was powerfully demonstrated to be Son of God spiritually, set apart by his having been resurrected from the dead; he is Yeshua the Messiah, our Lord. 5 Through him we received grace and were given the work of being an emissary on his behalf promoting trust-grounded obedience among all the Gentiles, 6 including you, who have been called by Yeshua the Messiah.
7 To: All those in Rome whom God loves, who have been called, who have been set apart for him:
Grace to you and shalom from God our Father and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah.
8 First, I thank my God through Yeshua the Messiah for all of you, because the report of your trust is spreading throughout the whole world. 9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit by spreading the Good News about his Son, is my witness that I regularly remember you 10 in my prayers; and I always pray that somehow, now or in the future, I might, by God’s will, succeed in coming to visit you. 11 For I long to see you, so that I might share with you some spiritual gift that can make you stronger — 12 or, to put it another way, so that by my being with you, we might, through the faith we share, encourage one another. 13 Brothers, I want you to know that although I have been prevented from visiting you until now, I have often planned to do so, in order that I might have some fruit among you, just as I have among the other Gentiles. 14 I owe a debt to both civilized Greeks and uncivilized people, to both the educated and the ignorant; 15 therefore I am eager to proclaim the Good News also to you who live in Rome.
16 For I am not ashamed of the Good News, since it is God’s powerful means of bringing salvation to everyone who keeps on trusting, to the Jew especially, but equally to the Gentile. 17 For in it is revealed how God makes people righteous in his sight; and from beginning to end it is through trust — as the Tanakh puts it, “But the person who is righteous will live his life by trust.”[a]
18 What is revealed is God’s anger from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people who in their wickedness keep suppressing the truth; 19 because what is known about God is plain to them, since God has made it plain to them. 20 For ever since the creation of the universe his invisible qualities — both his eternal power and his divine nature — have been clearly seen, because they can be understood from what he has made. Therefore, they have no excuse; 21 because, although they know who God is, they do not glorify him as God or thank him. On the contrary, they have become futile in their thinking; and their undiscerning hearts have become darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they have become fools! 23 In fact, they have exchanged the glory of the immortal God for mere images, like a mortal human being, or like birds, animals or reptiles!
24 This is why God has given them up to the vileness of their hearts’ lusts, to the shameful misuse of each other’s bodies. 25 They have exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, by worshipping and serving created things, rather than the Creator — praised be he for ever. Amen. 26 This is why God has given them up to degrading passions; so that their women exchange natural sexual relations for unnatural; 27 and likewise the men, giving up natural relations with the opposite sex, burn with passion for one another, men committing shameful acts with other men and receiving in their own persons the penalty appropriate to their perversion. 28 In other words, since they have not considered God worth knowing, God has given them up to worthless ways of thinking; so that they do improper things. 29 They are filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and vice; stuffed with jealousy, murder, quarrelling, dishonesty and ill-will; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God; they are insolent, arrogant and boastful; they plan evil schemes; they disobey their parents; 31 they are brainless, faithless, heartless and ruthless. 32 They know well enough God’s righteous decree that people who do such things deserve to die; yet not only do they keep doing them, but they applaud others who do the same.

Desire to Visit Rome
8 First, (M)I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that (N)your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. 9 For (O)God is my witness, (P)whom I serve [b]with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that (Q)without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers, 10 making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you. 11 For I long to see you, that (R)I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established— 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by (S)the mutual faith both of you and me.
13 Now I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that I often planned to come to you (but (T)was hindered until now), that I might have some (U)fruit among you also, just as among the other Gentiles. 14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. 15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also.
The Just Live by Faith
16 For (V)I am not ashamed of the gospel [c]of Christ, for (W)it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, (X)for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For (Y)in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, (Z)“The just shall live by faith.”
God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness
18 (AA)For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and (AB)unrighteousness of men, who [d]suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because (AC)what may be known of God is [e]manifest [f]in them, for (AD)God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world (AE)His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and [g]Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but (AF)became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 (AG)Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the (AH)incorruptible (AI)God into an image made like [h]corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things (AP)which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, [l]sexual immorality, wickedness, [m]covetousness, [n]maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 [o]undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, [p]unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, (AQ)knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things (AR)are deserving of death, not only do the same but also (AS)approve of those who practice them.
